If he gets another contract, I will declare this the summer of butch.

He mustn't have one infront of him yet. Being held up by schulz and potential trades you would think. He will get what is left over, if anything. That's the challenge.

Haha. Butcher haters really are the Crows supporters of Port supporters. Joyless people.

Guilty of being joyless watching Butch having set shots at goal!

How can you not love the anticipation, the drama, the knot in your stomach when he shanks it?

IMO if he doesn't stay someone else will pick him up. He has done more than enough in the last couple of weeks.

Agree, someone would pick him up and take a punt. So to speak.

Earlier this year I would have disagreed.

Just spoke to John.

There's a chance he's staying.

1 in a million............... So your saying there's a chance!

Those first three shots at goal are possibly the three worst I have ever seen by a specialist forward. Otherwise, I loved his game.

I still don't get those who say rookie list him. I just don't see the value in that. We need to be able to play him when Schultz/Dixon is injured etc. We lose too much selection flexibility having him on the rookie list.

That kicking. Seriously. Whether it is mental or otherwise, they are the worst looking shanks. A bit soul destroying for him, team mates and fans. Surely something new needs to be tried, some other method taught. Something. Anything...

May have been fun in a pointless game but his kicking for goal is a liability, some are celebrating his efforts today but we have sucked this year and we need to improve a hell of alot without having to carry a key forward who can kick properly in normal play but is mentally fragile when some white sticks are placed in front of him . Butch may be a great bloke but I want us to push for a premiership.

Earlier in the year and previous years I think every time he lines up for goal he feels the pressure of playing for his spot next week and these last few weeks he's playing for career. While not having seen him play SANFL I think he needed to be persevered more at senior level and be gifted a string of games without fear of being dropped, especially with everything else he is now bringing to the table.

I remember watching Tom Hawkins week in and week out and think why are Geelong persevering with this dud, but they were eventually rewarded for showing faith in him.

Different KPF entirely, stand and contested mark like Cloke but on a different timeline. Just had to learn how to use his body. John seems to do that well a fair whack of the time now for the sort of pack crashing, mobile leading KPF that he is. Yes there is the odd WTF leap like a startled sheep every now and again.

Not a relevant comparison for the point (and the out on the full) at hand. The point being: how bad did these other KPFs set shot kicking look while they were developing? NB: this is absolutely NOT a statistical question. "Yips, with ok technique" or "couldn't reliably spray paint a wall" or "it got better" is the sort of answer that matters here.

Norwood supporters lol. I say old chap your kicking is a bit wayward. Oh Butcher old man you kick like Keats writes penambic meter. Jonathon, that kick was the antithesis of the calculus of a negative differential. Chewy on your boot Johnny. I say old man that was a bit rough, hardly called for. Sorry chums I don't know what came over me.

I guess he'll be confused.

Butcher you campaigner I ****ed your sister. No that was my sister mate. Oh ****. Aren't we brothers?

Change his entire name... Hypnotherapy Hodges :thumbsu:
Ken: Tell you what, John, from now on your name is Scott Hodges. Let's just practice a bit, hmm? So when I say "kick the goal, Scott Hodges", you nail the set shot.

Butcher: Check!

Ken: Kick the goal, Scott Hodges.

[Butcher shanks the shot]

Ken: Now, remember, your name is Scott Hodges.

Butcher: I gotcha!

Ken: Kick the goal, Scott Hodges.

[again, Butcher shanks the shot]

[Ken and Tyson Edwards stare at each other]

(hours later)

Ken: Argh... Now when I say "kick the goal, Scott Hodges" and press down on your foot, you take a run up, competently drop the ball and kick the goal.

Butcher: No problem.

[stepping hard on Butcher's foot]

Ken: Kick the goal, Scott Hodges.

[Butcher drops the ball after two steps and it comes off his knee]

Butcher: [whispering to Edwards] I think he's talking to you.

Today shows why we need to persist with Butch. Crashes packs, takes contested marks and gets enough shots on goal to make an impact. His set shots are no good but he CAN overcome the mental demons, he CAN get a good routine. It's all a matter of when. It may take a while yet but it's an aspect of anyone's game that can be fixed. So persistence is vital.

How would we all feel if we let him go, someone picks him up and happens to get his set shots right? He's going to be a damaging player. He shows that he can be capable to tear a game apart.

Rookie list him or keep him a spot on the senior list. Just keep him. You can see from the reaction of EVERYONE after that goal that he is our cult hero. We love him, his teammates love him and the coaching staff love him. With all of our support I have no doubt we can become the player we expect him to be.

So how about we sit back and ride this roller coaster together.

Please someone agree with me that Butch took mark of the year.

The mark/goal combo blew the proverbial roof off the place.

What happened to "he's a spud" and "you don't sign a player based on one game"

Our kicking is poor. We lost a prelim final and a spot in the grand final in part to poor kicking. We returned in 2015 with poorer kicking. If we excuse Butcher by keeping him on the list then is it any wonder why several of our first 22 stretch the acceptable limits of poor kicking?

Butcher is not that bad of a player. I'm a supporter of Butcher but for his other attributes, not his kicking. When he has a game and puts it together with his kicking I know it is not a permanent change, I'm just relieved he got it right. I've watched him play lots of games. However I believe you can't have a specialist afl forward that has such a poor kick like he does.

It will not surprise me if he makes every sports show this week and gets ridiculed.

It appears likely, judging by Hinkley's presser that we'll keep Butcher for 2016.
