Rookie list spot I'm all for. Can't fault his effort, work rate, marking, forward pressure etc. It's just his one fatal flaw. Now I'm in the won't make it crowd, but even I want him to make it, even others who want him gone we all want him to make it.

Just spoke to John.

There's a chance he's staying.

Will be dependant on Schulz going you would think. If Jay says he wants to go, part of his contract will shift to Butcher.

We'll know by Thursday I guess.

If we de-list him with the aim to put him on the rookie list is there a risk we could loose him to another club? Personally I think you either keep him on the senior list and play him or let him go.

When he times the crashing of a pack he looks a million $. I look at the TV and go oh that was Butch, in surprise. Not the guy who used to run around looking hungry but lost on field.

But that set shot kicking is worth a million negative $. It can't be allowed to cost us a shot a 2016 finals. It's debatable if it should even be allowed to cost us a trade that might be useful in 2016 or a draft pick that may only deliver in 2018.

The whole "can only learn by playing at AFL level" argument holds water for leading patterns, timing, awareness, etc but has nothing to do with set shots.

Please, try to make a case that he must learn the basics of set shot kicking at AFL level. Find me another example of a player who has done this while playing for a contender, not a "rebuilder".

If it was just technique I'm sure we'd have tried to mitigate it.

If it was just psych, I'm sure we'd have talked him past it.

If it's biomechanical, an issue out of ops he's had, we'd have given up or taken a trade previously.

What's frustrating is that we as fans have no idea at all what it is.

What's frightening is the club has almost certainly been fully competent in its methods (post Primus) yet may also have no idea.

It's a strange case especially when you notice how much more AFL standard his field kicking is.

There are a couple of reasons to hang onto Butch (KPF depth post Schulz; KPD depth if our 2nd ruck setup starts to include Trengove more than Lobbe) but geez its frustrating seeing his progress in most areas combined with a continuing total fail in *the* critical KPI for a KPF.

KT spoke positively about him at the post-match. Said it was a roller-coaster ride but what an exciting player. KT has an eye on marketing value. The crowd support for him is phenomenal.

I've said for a long time it's a mental issue like Ian Baker-Finch's yips. Even the goal he kicked was a shank. It might be time to go the less conventional route with him - hypnotherapy, crystals, pyramids, altered states chambers, change his surname to Hodges. Whatever will get him believing even if it is a placebo.

I'm sick of hearing 'it's all mental' with John Butcher. The guy is a mental basket case because HE CAN'T KICK!!! What do people not understand about this. He could have the mental strength of Steve Waugh but with that kicking technique he will never amount to anything. If we don't delist him we're not serious about improving. I'll give him one thing, he must be one hell of a good bloke to have so many supporters still in his corner after so many embarrassing performances.

Great to see him clunk a few grabs today. If he could improve his kicking I reckon we would see a big improvement in his output not just on the scoreboard, I reckon there is a bit of self sabotage with his play because he's petrified of set shots.

So... You didn't see him kicking for goal in the warm up?

Or his field kicking for the last month?

Thank god I've never heard of you on this board before. Would have preferred I still hadn't.

He can kick though. His field kick is absolutely fine. This is a dumb opinion.

His routine is garbage and he clearly mentally struggles with the pressure of set shots. When he's not taking a set shot his kicking is basically average for a tall.

Change his entire name... Hypnotherapy Hodges :thumbsu:

I love butch...

But he does need to grow some balls and embrace that he isnt going to kick em all...

Please stay Butch...

Earlier in the year and previous years I think every time he lines up for goal he feels the pressure of playing for his spot next week and these last few weeks he's playing for career. While not having seen him play SANFL I think he needed to be persevered more at senior level and be gifted a string of games without fear of being dropped, especially with everything else he is now bringing to the table.

I remember watching Tom Hawkins week in and week out and think why are Geelong persevering with this dud, but they were eventually rewarded for showing faith in him.

100% spot on, these posters crying because he kicked a goal against Peal Thunder will be crying twice as much next year when still can't kick in games that will mean much to us than today's circus. He's been not good enough now for 6 seasons, if we don't move him on this year the little worth he does have will be gone. In saying all this I believe the club will keep him on and by the end of next season this thread will be over 300 pages.
