Our forward structure has been abysmal this year yet we weren't that far off the mark. Number one priority next year is to get the cattle and get it right.

People will shout me down for this, but I think we can learn a bit from the Crows forward structure this year and especially the role played by Tom Lynch.

If we get Dixon, then I'd like us to work on Butcher developing into an old-fashioned Darren Smith type CHF, who works hard enough up the ground to link with his teammates and provide avenues out of defence, but also creates goal assists in the forward 50.

If less emphasis was placed on Butcher's kicking and more on his leading (which needs work), roaming and general work rate, then I believe he could still be a valuable commodity for us playing higher up the ground.

This is the role I've been wanting Westhoff to play! He has the motor, but is more intent on running around everywhere rather than lock down a leading half forward link role. I agree though I think this role suits Butcher as it would alleviate the need for him to worry about goal kicking as hopefully he would be leading up and getting most of this possessions out of scoring range and linking the ball from defensive 50 to forward 50.

Agree for sure. Butcher is never going to be the one we rely on as the main goalkicker, but as that 'link', has possibilities.
On Westhoff, he spends to much time backwards of centre. Should be played on the wing where he can play as he does now without having one less up forward.

I've got no problem with Hoff playing back, a loose defender who can take a big pack grab is a valuable commodity.

I've always wanted to see a defender/ruck, we were close with Trengove but he doesn't ruck anymore. Being able to stick a big bodied contested player behind the ball to chop off kicks and leads is underrated IMO, I find it a little surprising that all rucks and part time rucks have to be forwards in their non ruck time.

I know there are strong earnest believers in Butch on here but some of the clutching of straws is becoming tiresome
As far as the best contested mark comments ... Think of the Hoff saving our ass in the back lines or indeed marking everything in sight on his Hoff days out in the forward 50
Think of. Wingard hanger whilst being crunched
Think of Shultz flying over a pack on the goal line whilst commentators are screaming
Sorry def not our best mark
Not a good kick after what after 7 years?
And the latest is that he makes our forward line straighten up?
Another one is well he's better than a rookie like Shaw or Harvey etc
Fairs fair when are we going to face up to it and stop making excuses
Or when is he going to take charge of his destiny and do something

I reckon myself if he had played in that Brisbane game last year ( oh to get some confidence.....excuse no 13...)
Nothing would have changed

One thing I have learnt about coaches and players is there is always another talent waiting if you are prepared to look and try them
And turn them over fast
( yes I know excuse no 17 is that KPs take awhile)
But come on guys
Enough s enough
Anyone recall when the Hoff first showed us his goal sense by bouncing off that fullbacks back and turning around and running in goal and kicking truly
This is the elite level and some just don't make it and I for one would rather his spot go go another player with potential unrealised no matter how cheap Butch would be next year ( excuse no 18)
There's a Gunston waiting out there now at a lower level to be picked
It's like we're sticking with the wrong coach forever is my anology

Just ****ing stop it!

Run in and kick the bloody thing. Should have 2 already.

He can't be a forward and be used to hide his major deficiency in his kicking. It's over for him, he tries hard, can't fault his effort but it's been 6/7 years now. It's over for him we can all see it. Any other player who had shown this lack of improvement everyone would be all over that player. Enough is enough.

there is a lot of emotion out there with butcher at the moment. hard to read from it whether its cos its his last game or cos he kicked the goal. Taking a few cracker marks, he could be an amazing player if only he could kick a ball

Id love to have a chat to him one day.
In a different sport I went through the same mental issues where there's no logic to it. And it just gets the better of you. The mind is a powerful thing.

There's really only two ways through it - keep saddling up until the monkey gets off, or find ways to work around it.

I was almost in tears after that goal. Incredible. And the chant after... spine tingling.
