Butcher getting the most enthusiastic reach around last weekend.

Hi all, I come in peace, and in all seriousness. Butch should forget trying to kick drop punts. Go back to the old flat punt. You hit the fat part of the ball and they generally go straight. Worked for Peter Hudson.

Lloyd wasn't disinterested, he was pressured to give a short simple answer about a complex question and he probably couldn't articulate an answer in time. I reckon if the club did enquire he would make time during the off season.

May cost us an arm and a leg though, would imagine us to be paying him and flying him in and out on top.

Unfortunately, the only way to know if it helps is for him to be getting regular AFL games with regular set shots. Small sample sizes help no one, remembering before Schulz was injured, he had nailed all his set shots at AFL level in 2015.

Garry Lyon seems to have an eye on Butch, I remember him giving Chad a "cook" about calling Butcher out of a lead when he was in prime position to take the grab in round 1 as well. A fairly innocuous incident to all bar Port fanatics I woulda thought.

That actually crossed my mind on the weekend watching him. They generally go pretty straight.

Maybe if he tries to kick the ball like that it will turn into an actual drop punt :p

Well all the indications from Ken are that Butch will be retained which I'm happy with. If i was him though, in the preseason I would focus only on the kicking for goal. He seems he so devoured of confidence that when he lines up for a kick, he doesn't think about kicking the goal instead getting the kicking technique right. That where he stuffs up. He should stop listening to others i reckon and should just look at developing his own technique.

Theres a stat in the NBA that Dwight Howard makes 82% of his free throws in training but when it come to game day he shoots under 50%, would not surprise me if this is similar to Butch

As others have said, his kicking has gone backwards. He should watch a bit of this - when he was drafted. At least he kicked through the ball! The other thing is that he was the main man - so was much more confident

Far out, show this to his kicking coach. A 5 step run up is causing his kick to be far worse. This natural 15-17 step run up worked for him and should be what he is doing. The guys kick still looked horrible, but at least it was going straight. This must be the routine he tries to perfect, not some weird 5 step crap that's not going to work consistently for anyone.

And you're right, the kicking through the ball is a clear difference here compared to what he does now.

Have posted that before a few times, and put up the Barry Cable video of his trick shot handball and doing drop kicks and how dropping it right and kicking thru the ball ties in with kicking a drop punt.

The club has failed Butch in not get him the right kicking coach to do the mechanics and a sports shrink or hypnotist to work on his head issues.

I think you are spot on REH in that the club has failed him in that regard. I said as much to an eminent BF poster at the game on Saturday. There is no excuse for him not being a better shot for goal than he is. However, after the last month or so, I think that Butch is definitely worth hanging onto. His hands and ground coverage are very good and he certainly splits packs thereby creating spillage and opportunities at ground level.

there should an investigation done into butch's kicking and the report made public. The members deserve to know what exactly has been done to fix butchs kicking in the last 6 years..because from the outside it seems nothing has been done. Find the best kicking coach and spend all summer working on kicking..no running or any other drills just set shots until his technique is perfect..why this wasnt done six years ago is unbelievable.

There have been many things done and PTV has shown a lot of them, from forensic camera methods to bringing in past great and psychologists.

There is no panacea it's a combination of confidence, opportunity and timing. All of these things need more game time to improve them, something Butcher has not been afforded having played fewer than 30 in 6 years.

This sums up 90% of Footy Classified. 99% if Hutchinson is involved.

Do you hold the ball side ways for a flat punt?
No, you hold it straight but flat, so the length of the ball is parallel to the ground. Instead of kicking the point of the ball like a drop punt, you hit the middle section = more margin for error.

He needs to go back to a more natural motion, perhaps try to implement his field kicking technique to his set shots? His field kicking looks ungainly but he kicks drop punts and generally hits the target. His set shots just spray all over the place and he clearly doesn't have much confidence in his current technique.

It's probably too late to re-engineer his entire kicking technique so the key is to come up with something he feels comfortable with when he is lining up for goal.

Dont the players all generally say in practice he is a lot better than on game day?

Hard to say the club has done nothing to improve this if he has only played a handful of senior games and its only really on game day that his kicking is terrible.

I'd say every player is better in practice. In professional sports there will always bea mental hurdle.

Unfortunately for Butcher everywhere he goes the crowd will give him shit. He has to live with it.

It's an in'game problem though on the mental side, I mean he has trouble with his kicking in front of 3 people and a dog at a Snafl game.

There's also a massive gap between having a series of leisurely shots at your own pace and lining up 20 seconds after you've lead up the field and doubled back 150 metres to take a pack hanger.
