There's also a massive gap between having a series of leisurely shots at your own pace and lining up 20 seconds after you've lead up the field and doubled back 150 metres to take a pack hanger.
And its not really something that can practice outside of game day

Do you hold the ball side ways for a flat punt?

That'a a torp, or screw punt as they used to be called.

Peter Hudson used the flat punt to great effect in the 60's and early 70's, where he held the ball flat, with the bottom of it literally parallel to the ground, and in the action of kicking his foot made contact with the belly of the ball.
With the flat punt the ball goes straight most of the time but doesn't carry as far as a drop punt.

Edit
I should have gone back further in the thread, I didn't realise the tigger supporter had already answered your question. ;)

He should start kicking torps. Couldn't do any worse really.

The problem with Butch using any style of kick, is his leg is usually bent when he makes contact.
The bent leg is no doubt caused by the ball drop ( ie he drops the ball too close, and/or not straight ), so unfortunately we keep going back to square one with the mechanics of the bloke's kicking.

I agree though that we need to keep him, as Harvs is struggling a bit since he has had to share the rucking duties, and there are big question marks over Shaw.

I also believe ( as suggested by others ) that the club must get a kicking coach from outside the current Port system.

Or the best of both worlds. Dewy, Lade, where are you when we need you most??? :(

What he needs is 30000 fans to turn up to goal kicking practice. Match Crowd simulation. And knowing our crowd I am sure we'd be willing to do it. In fact how about some virtual reality glasses?

After the ****ing great celebration after his goal on the weekend, he would have to know the crowd has his back. If it is just a gameday thing, maybe there is a way the crowd can show our support to him to help him feel more relaxed. Probably shutting up while he is lining up and not letting out a massive SIGH whenever he misses would be a start. A couple of banners to let him know he has some love. At times, it looked like he wanted anybody to have the ball but him. If he knows the crowd loves him, his confidence would have to jump.

Sorry. Bit rambly.

Or stand up and turn our backs? Seriously though, yes it would be fantastic if the supporters could help him somehow.

Missing the greatest used car salesman/ footballer ever....... The late great Ken Eustice.

Ken will be disappointed to hear he has died.

I don't follow Port Adelaide but have seen a lot of your games over the last few years, and I have to say watching Johnny Butcher on the weekend almost brought me to tears. This problem of his only seems to be getting worse and if you as a club can't fix it I think it would be best for all parties involved for you to let him go. I think a new year at a new club may be the best for Johns confidence and will provide him the chance to shake off the never-ending criticism on his goal kicking and football in general. Thoughts?

There is more to Johnny than just kicking.

You can't have him.

The problem is, could Butcher cost us a final, the sad answer is yes, he does every thing else right but a an important goal in a final, i shudder to think.
Well, this isn't quite right.

Butcher might miss a shot late in the game but overwhelmingly we're a better football side with him in, so the obvious counterargument is that we wouldn't have won without him anyway.

What i meant was we wouldn't want him having that last kick for goal in a final to win the game. Yes, like i said in a previous post, there is more to Johnny than just kicking, i understand what you mean.

I wouldn't think we would be a good fit for him, maybe a Fremantle.
If he keeps going the way he is going, I could sadly see mental health being a problem for him
Yes of course, his mental wellbeing could be an issue but the way he loves the club, and the club loves him, I think giving him another year to work on things might be best for his mental health. Ken has so much faith in him. Ken had faith in Sam Gray too at AFL level when there were so many knockers, and look how that turned out. Ken said recently that he wants Butch to take a page out of AhChee's book and continue to work hard on the things he needs to fix. I hold a lot of hope for Butch. He has many strings to his bow plus I've never seen such a tight knit group as our players.

As others have said, his kicking has gone backwards. He should watch a bit of this - when he was drafted. At least he kicked through the ball! The other thing is that he was the main man - so was much more confident

I like his slight swagger in his run up which suggests he is relaxed.

schulz has a similar but more pronounced movement.

I'd love to know what runs through his mind when he plays and lines up for goals. I bet he has missed his shot 100 times in his head before he turns around to take his shot at goals.

He could very well have an anxiety issue to go with his poor kicking action. I actually think an anxiety issue could be remedied easier than his kicking technique.
