You're not seeing the logic, I'm not talking about best 22 here. Butcher should be the next tall in if we lose one of Lobbe, Ryder, Schulz, Westhoff and potentially a KPD depending on Clurey's form.

With Lobbe missing the first 3 weeks and Ryder now missing 3, Butcher should have been selected had he been in any decent form.
His dropping for Redden for round 2 was a ****ing outrage

Ken won't select Butcher to replace a ruck, had Redden been on the emergency list in round 1 he would've got the gig instead, and if Ken wants to play 2 rucks right now - which he doesn't - Redden would get the gig again.

Schulz is the only one he could be a direct replacement for, if Westhoff went down, I imagine they would some shuffling around instead.

I thought you would be fuming at this considering his output in the fwd line
Oh I am. Don't worry about that.

It's all well and good to bring in out of form players like Colquohoun and O'Sheezy to ensure we go like for like and maintain our structure, but picking Harvey or Butcher when we lose a tall is totally out of the question.

There is an enormous amount of inconsistency in our selection philosophy

Played very well in the second half against West Adelaide today. Hardly in it in the first half. Alternated defence/attack and took himself off for a few midfield runs. His game offered something to support anyone with fixed opinions either for or against him.

It's an elastic philosophy. ;)

Good to hear he did some nice things today, to get his hands on pill get involved and offer something today should do him the world of good.... keep working hard Butch

For what it's worth I'm totally happy with him being played back from now on, confidence player and needs to get his some leather poisoning before he gets into form anywhere on the ground. If play back does that them more power to him.

Some of us were calling for Butcher to get a go in defence two years ago but it didn't seem to happen.

I am with you BrockBlitz and hopefully the penny has dropped and Butcher will get the chance to show what he can do further up the ground. In the rare times I have seen Butcher out of the forward line he has impressed. I am a little cautious however because I recall a game at Alberton last year when we were beaten but Hocking put Butcher to defence and into the ruck in the third and he had an immediate impact. I thought, it looks like Butcher will get a chance to show what he can do. But no, next quarter he was back in the forward line and that was that.

From my write-up in the Magpies game-day thread:

Spent a fair part of his day on their main target up forward, Hardy. Kept him to 1 goal, and beat him to the ball multiple times to create turnovers. Started the game well, didn't have a touch in the second quarter (West only scored 2 points for the term), then played a very good second half. His defensive pressure was good all day. Found quite a bit of the ball through the middle of the ground as a link-up player, via some very nice marks. Went forward for a little while in the third quarter and slotted a goal (noteworthy because it was a perfect drop punt). I only recall one particularly poor disposal all day, in fact. Easily his best game for the year, really hope that he backs up this week with a good game against Adelaide next round.

Yeah I guess the it really depends on the reasoning. Do I want us to try and turn him into a defender ? No
Do I want him to get some confidence ? yes
Do we stick him in defence so he can learn some leading patterns etc ? - well SANFL forwards aren't the people I want him learning from.
I would like to stick him on Schulz or Westy every training session. That would be awesome and it wasn't something I saw during my time at the club.

I think we're both on the same page, he needs to touch the ball to have an influence. I'm not particularly fussed where that is for the time being.

might sound a little ridiculous, but that was one of my most enjoyable games from the butch in a long, long time, & probably at sanfl level. just purely for the fact that he actually wanted the ball, & wasn't running away from it. his 10 minute stint up forward in the 3rd was good as well, that mark was huge, & the kick was perfect. gave one off when he should've taken the set but ill forgive him. his field kicking around the ground was very easy on the eye considering it was coming from him.

He's still not a defender... He was often trailing his direct opponent by a fair way and lucky that they didn't get a good kick to them. But he also played a lot looser as a role... His third quarter was huge. Took an amazing pack mark in defence as the third man in, then had a run of about 3 - 4 touches linking up through the middle.

Also provided a nice switching option throughout the second half running up the opposite side of the field. It was good to see him just naturally play football instead of him constantly worrying about positioning or leading patterns... His field kicking was good and he seemed to enjoy being involved in the play.

He's teasing us like one of those French girls.

I'd love to see him come in against Carlton.

.... gave one off when he should've taken the set .....
He's done that for quite a while now, it's a real measure of the fluctuating confidence levels. The +ve from that was that he'd hunted down the ball in the first place, and that he didn't do it again.

Butch isn't a natural defender, but maybe he has gained some confidence from his time in defence, that 3rd qtr mark and goal against the bloods was the conventional mark, kick and goal that is a key forward's bread and butter.

Please Butch show us more of that, and while I doubt he will be picked for the game against the blue baggers I will be barracking for him big time if he is. :)
