Not a question of being patient with Casboult. Sav Rocca has taken him by the scruff of the neck and taught him how to kick. I'm thinking Carlton are waiting for Butch to drop off the list and do the same with him. Just a theory.

What is with our club and not appointing/allowing any individual player mentoring.

Walker has Tredrea
Casboult has Sav
Danniher has Lloyd (since think he has taken up a position at the club for all players)

No one at Port is showing enough proactivity to get the most of the kind of players who need it most (big forwards), that is the frustrating part.

Walker called out for Tredders...

I tweeted Warren regarding helping Butcher and his response was "He's got my number.. He know's where I am"

Seems Butch didn't seek out any mentoring.

And therein lies the problem. If Butch wants to succeed at AFL level, he should be doing everything in his power to seek assistance from past legends of the club.

Time is running out fast for him.

Yep, but it is 2 way. If the club were serious they would look in to it. Instead, we fit him in a video game mocap suit to analyse his kicking, so our special kicking coach can - oh, we don't have one of those either.

All aspects of the way we coach our forwards is behind the 8 ball.

His mid year review

http://www.portadelaidefc.com.au/news/2015-06-30/midyear-review-the-forwards
Butcher, like Neade, made an early appearance in the AFL before sliding back to SANFL level where he's played as both a key marking forward, but also found himself being thrown back to play roles in defence. It's hampered his ability to score at times, but his defensive game has been surprisingly good for a guy who has spent most of his Port career up forward.

"We’ve thrown Butch around a bit as we think he can provide us flexibility down back when required. His challenge is to keep producing consistently in whatever role he finds himself in the back half of the year, we play better as a team when he’s on song." – Trent Hentschel. [quote/]

wow, who would of thought that playing down back hampers your ability to score

Why does the club bother with the reviews? So uninspiring and lacking in insight.

Actually we learned that they sound satisfied with Butcher's progress and form as a defender. That's news. I wouldn't have guessed it.

It seemed odd to play him back in a game where their forwards killed us. Either they thought he was the best option to quell that, or they were happy to lose the game, which would be completely unacceptable to me. Stick him on the pine FFS if you really have made your mind up. Don't drag the team down and the loyal supporters.

Or, again, they think he was the best option as a KPD.

Bizzare either way.

i know where you are coming from but you miss the point a bit. As unpalatable as it sounds the Port Magpies are an AFL Reserves side and as such players will be tried in positions with a view to their AFL roles. Okay I accept that it would have been nice to have beaten the Crows but sometimes there is a bigger picture.

I have feeling that Butcher, who is out of contract this year, is playing for his future at the Power and if he does not show some promise as a defender he will be dropped from the list. I am for giving Butcher every opportunity to gain confidence and if that means leaving him in defence for an extended period so be it. He will have some average games but for every good game he plays in defence our AFL options broaden.

What really disappoints me is that it has taken Hocking and Hinkley and co. so long to try Butcher in a defensive role. Many of us were calling for Butcher to get an extended trial in defence a couple of seasons back. Sometimes there does not seem to be enough lateral thinking among our Coaches.

What really disappoints me is that they're doing it at all. He's behind Carlile, Trengove, Hombsch and Austin was recruited as a tall defender. Jonas can play tall, O'Shea can play tall.

What we are crying out for is a key forward for the future. We have invested a first round pick in one and instead of giving him what could be his final year on our list to try and prove himself there, we now move him back where he has little to no chance of being any value to us.

Hey hey hey. Logic has no place in this thread.

I would of thought part of the reason for the move down back has been to get him involved, he's been non-existent when he's played forward for the most part this year.

Do we even deploy a forward line at the Magpies?

The only time we seem to have people in our forward 50 is at a stoppage when two-thirds of the team wander up there.

You have a point but I think we all thought his confidence was shot up forward several weeks back so I can understand the move, new focus and being drawn to the ball by an opponent is not a bad thing for someone struggling.

going on last week though it's time to bag it and start him forward

Stewart isn't a tall forward. Stewart is 28. Stewart came in and played as a spare tall forward despite all his great form at SANFL level coming primarily as a midfielder.

With that said, why are you seemingly fine with Stewart coming in to "plug a gap" - when we have a 23yo key forward who has shown glimpses at AFL level far beyond Stewart's maximum output in the same square peg/round hole role?

What does it matter that the club and his teammates called him 'The Future' in a bid to supply everyone with a modicum of hope at a time when it looked like we were floating down the Ganges? We'd just been beaten by 138 & 165 points in consecutive weeks and avoided our first wooden spoon since 1900 by percentage. Butcher was a shining beacon among all of that - and he decided to stay when he was subject to a huge lure from various Melbourne clubs. The reason why he has sparked such debate is because his ceiling was astronomical once upon a time. And as he seems to have fallen further and further from favour, our selection policy doesn't seem to reflect the metrics that he is seemingly being judged by.

The logic is simple.

It makes absolutely no sense to pick Paul Stewart as a fish-out-of-water faux key forward when we have a younger - albeit enigmatic - option fit and ready to play. If Butcher comes in for a run of 5 games and disappoints, we know. He had a sustained shot and isn't up to it. But if Butcher can come in and have a game or two where he clunks a few contested marks, chases down opponents, gives off a few goals and kicks 2-4 himself what then? He'll have either saved his career at Port Adelaide and offers an option going forward as Jay fades and we wait on Shaw/Harvey, or he's delivered us some trade value should he decide to head back east. We can't lose, even with the least palatable outcome.

Or we could bring Stewart back to essentially be a poor man's Nick Salter in that particular role. Why?
