I wish to hear El_scorco's thoughts on this

Personally, since a Tigers supporter entered the foray, I am bawling my eyes out. If there's anything I don't wish on John, it's the Richmond Football Club

I'd love to know what runs through his mind when he plays and lines up for goals. I bet he has missed his shot 100 times in his head before he turns around to take his shot at goals.

He could very well have an anxiety issue to go with his poor kicking action. I actually think an anxiety issue could be remedied easier than his kicking technique.
I think you may be on the money + he does do a lot of gut running and when he kicks for goal he seems to rush it a little, so he could be sucking in the big ones. IMO he needs to reset and take his time, when kicking for goal.

I also have anxiety issues in my everyday life, I'd hate to be the guy who lines up to perform before 50,000 people

Yep he needs all that and a mantra to repeat with his inner voice when he lines up for goal. Something that keeps him focused and not worrying about missing or even too much on his technique. The only thing I want Butcher thinking when he lines up for goal is "I am the man and I kick the mutha ****in goals' over and over again. Even giving zero ****s of whether or not he kicks it would be better than what is running through his head right now.

Portia's vet's advice would be more humane.

John knows what the crowd are thinking. A hush comes over the crowd for his run up, then ahhhhhhh, then laughter. It is sad really, i want for him to do well.

IMO Butch could play a Westhoff type role, his field kicking is ok and that was a nice left handed handball to White for a goal, that might take the pressure off.
There is a lot of ifs about us next year. What role butch plays will depend on what our forward line looks like. If we get Dixon, If Jay stays.

That'a a torp, or screw punt as they used to be called.

Peter Hudson used the flat punt to great effect in the 60's and early 70's, where he held the ball flat, with the bottom of it literally parallel to the ground, and in the action of kicking his foot made contact with the belly of the ball.
With the flat punt the ball goes straight most of the time but doesn't carry as far as a drop punt.

Edit
I should have gone back further in the thread, I didn't realise the tigger supporter had already answered your question. ;)

Thanks

Being of eatern european decent my sport was soccer. then when I switched to footy, I held the ball side ways and kicked the belly until I gained confidence with the standard drop kick.

The result was fine albeit an ugly flight of the ball, but the accuracy was there and the distance was fine for an 8 year old.

That's basically what Peter Hudson used to do in the old days for Hawthorn. Thing is guys like him used to stay pretty close to goals so most of there shots was from around the 30m mark and not a lot of angle. Today's forward is kicking from much more distance and from tighter angles. You be pushing shyt uphill to kick a flat punt over 50m.

The inclusion of Dixon could work well for Butch. Might relieve a bit of the pressure on him knowing he isn't the main man.

I know he had Schulz but the way Schulzy pushes up the ground, Butch is the main target a lot of the time.

Could it be in his best interests for Port to let him go? I'd love nothing more than to see him come good for you guys, but as someone who has anxiety issues I also empathise with how being stuck in an environment can often make things worse if that is indeed what he's struggling with and I feel like it has to be because there's no other way his kicking could be so appalling. Might be a Jay Schultz type situation where if he chances clubs he can get some more confidence and start kicking straighter?

it would have been an awesome to launch a 50m side held belly bomb at the age of 8. its probably happened a few times in my dreams though.

All signs suggests that he absolutely loves the club. I don't know how the environment he is in can be affecting his performance.

Yeah sounds a good idea maybe a straight swap for Hogan be good for both. Butch be under no pressure at Melbourne, he could take a sleeping bag on the ground with him and Hogan get some hope of playing for finals instead of playing for draft picks.

That was a good moment in a dark time.

Butcher isn't a defender or a Westhoff-type swingman. He is a bash and crash full forward who can take a good grab, crash a pack and bring the ball to ground if needed - just needs to learn how to kick. If he can't improve his kicking, we could try and put a system in place where Neade crumbs off of Butcher's pack crashes and still keep him involved, but of course as soon as it works once the whole competition will have found it out.

Just work on your kicking Johnny.

The problem is, could Butcher cost us a final, the sad answer is yes, he does every thing else right but a an important goal in a final, i shudder to think.

You're looking at this the wrong way. What if he actually kicked the winning goal in a final or, wait for it, a grand final? It would be the single greatest moment in PAFC history.

He has only played a handful of games as a defender and none as a swingman. and he played alright as a defender. So what are you basing your opinion on?

Westhoff wasn't seen as a defender or swingman prior to 2013. We persisted in trying to make him a tall forward. Has done alright since moving into the swing role.

Imagine it. Butcher travels over to Melbourne with us as the emergency on our 2016 Grand Final game. He's not expecting to have to go on, and he's hoping he won't. But in the dying minutes of the game, Dixon rolls his ankle as he marks the ball inside 50, after kicking 8 goals. The score is Port 119 - Crows 124. The siren's just blown. Schulz is exhausted, he's badly injured himself and he knows this is his last game. He knows he doesn't have it in him to kick the winner, we need someone with fresh legs.

He motions for Butcher to come on. Kenny nods knowingly in the coaches box. Butcher points towards himself, fear on his face, as if to say 'me?'. He takes the call, walks onto the field to equal parts jeers and applause. The crowd's going wild. On one side the Crows fans are laughing, pointing, yelling out every insult they know lays into Butcher's deepest insecure subconscious. On the other side, the Port fans are chanting "Butcher! *clap clap clap* Butcher! *clap clap clap*".

He takes a deep breath and finally, he runs up and takes the kick. The crowd goes silent. It's the witching hour at the MCG. And the ball goes straight through the two goal posts, the straightest kick the kid's kicked all year. He was facing guaranteed delisting at the end of the season. The crowd erupts. It's pandemonium! Butcher goes blank. He can't believe it. Shock and awe register on his face while his team mates swarm him. They're all crying. Every one of them bawling their eyes out but with the biggest of smiles.

The Port fans flood the ground. They all join in in ravaging the Butch, lifting him above the crowd, throwing him into the air. Kenny simply golf claps in the coaches box, shaking his head in bemusement with that wry smile. The Crows fans are devastated. They'll never recover! And to be undone by the one they derided for so long. The moment is etched into Johnny's mind forever, his anxiety is killed forever. He's immediately resigned. A hungry beast called 'Confidence' awakens within him, and he never kicks a shank again, going on to win the Coleman medal three years in a row afterwards, and kick many a more legendary premiership goals.

Well, we can dream can't we...

Truth be told with now the likelyhood of Schulz staying at the club, I just don't know how Butcher will help the team here.

I guess there's a good chance Dixon will miss some games and that is where he can come in to help but that is already pushing the depth there since Lobbe may or may not be part of the final 22 due to structures and team balance.

Then again, I guess extra extra depth isn't a bad thing.
