Preview Bye week after 2 weeks... this is stupid......

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Even the seppos dont do this shit and in a league where thats all we copy, this is the best unique idea we can come up with?

Seriously?!?!

Anyway, guess it gives me more time to count the newcomers on the Scratcher bandowagon.. Toot Toot..

My boy is building..... as he needs to.. but its coming along.

We have issues and need to fix them - consciousness in the first quarter high on the list of things to cross off.

Anyway... have a wander around all things Geelong bye week here until we get a better option ... like Rd 4.

GO Catters

I'm actually glad we have the bye to be honest.

We go in now clearly knowing what's required, and that our best is still top tier when we turn it on.

A lot of what is required should be obvious and intrinsic regardless, but these things are funny like that sometimes, particularly early in the year.

Get to refresh and go to work on what hasn't worked, like our structure and apparent lack of intensity. They're definitely concerns, but our form after quarter time shows it's as fixable as flicking a switch if we're serious this year.

The likes of PFD, Baz, Cameron and a few others get some time off to get fully fit, and we get a couple of weeks to study how to shutdown the Crows, while the VFL side gets some minutes.

1-1, and the season starts in proper now IMO. Even if it's technically real footy, these super early starts the last few years have felt so pre-seasonish to me, particularly in the Northern states.

Hate opening round and the early season bye, but we will have a distinct advantage against the Crows next week, as they’ll be coming off a six day break when they face us.

We've has 8 quarters to review, so some initial thoughts on the preseason concerns versus what we see:

1) Percieved ruck deficiency: once again it looks like it probably doesn't matter

2) How do we play with so many single position on-ballers? Bruhn at half back is a tick, Jhye Clark in F50 has mixed reviews with some 5 star ratings and some goving a 2.

Any others?

Bowes can do a job on ball and down back can go forward as well.

Not being biased but....always enjoy Hawks (Tomahawk) output with the fox footy team on match day telecasts, but was he just seat filling for Johno Brown on OTC last night.

Clark is trending upwards and that's what matters, I reckon.

Big tick for Bruhn from me.

Edwards wasn't bad either,. considering one of his opponents is a ruck/mid hybrid type

Some wanting Stevens in the seniors, but I think he's even more limited positional wise than Bruhn or Clark - can't recall him playing anywhere other than the guts in the VFL

While Knevitt has the opposite issue where they'll plug & play him anywhere, rather than him being given a chance to settle into a role

Yeah i was shocked when they played played knevitt forward against the suns. Just why?

I think he can do a Ginbey as a 194vm mid to the backline where he has good disposal when not under pressure, good marking ability, plays like a slow mid at ground level.

I don't know what role we'd play George in right now

The ruck situation to me is another chapter in the storied history of "hit outs don't matter".

Edwards can impact at ground level once he builds endurance which is a huge plus for me

Bye come at a good time, reset and start properly

I get the OR concept
Just have every team play with a focus on northern states, perhaps SA & WA teams face each other

Hauling in Fremantle at home isn't 'top tier' IMO. The two trips to Queensland, and Adelaide away, will be the hardest games in the AFL this year.
They're shorter than us in the betting markets for the premiership even after they lost to us. They're only $2 behind the crows.

We have agreed before that we would like to see Knevitt tried on the hb line, but the fact that they didn't even try this during the practice games suggests that they (coaches) don't agree with us...

What role would Stevens play - the Worpel role, and he would likely do it better. Worpel has been underwhelming so far, George at least can deliver the ball to our advantage. Again, the coaches don't agree as he was not even an emergency in the 2 games to date.

This whole opening round is so stupid. Just start with Round 1 and then play and extra game on Sunday and the 3 games on the Monday (Public Holiday) to have a normal fixture. I hate how the ladder doesn’t make sense for the first 5 rounds.

Bruhn and Clark aren't in that category.

Holmes and Smith aren't either.

Atkins and Worpel are. Maybe Worpel is only needed as depth if we keep using Edwards to help in ruck.

A 6 goal comeback against a side expected to fight for top-4 - who beat GWS, Collingwood and Bulldogs on the road late last year - that is absolutely top tier.

Yeah, they also finished seventh last year and have flown the width of the country. They're still flakier than a box of Weeties

Ruck is still a big issue. We won despite the opposition having a dominant ruck. It wasn’t a non issue.

Not sure though we have any other option other than to invest games into Edwards.
IMO we just don't have a solution to that problem for the next 24 months, so best to just plug in long-term solutions (Edwards, Conway if he ever leaves the medical room) and go from there.

Certainly not this year anyway. Whether we are able to find someone in the next off season who knows?

and it's not a long bye for us
