Early call, but taking a team on after they come off a bye may be an advantage for us.
We've just done it, and we play Kangas and the Bullies both after they have a bye, at subi though.
Could be a good thing for us, especially after the Bulldogs had another bye yesterday.
Problem will be, we then have a bye and then take on the Tigers in Melbourne.
One week at a time, though!

This site is very bad this year, its Sunday evening and we've got no love, just a little bit here and there !
Sensational start to the season, seeing how bad we've been affected by injuries etc !
Fire the %*c& Up !!!!

Oh, and I reckon the bye will be helpful for us in the next month.

Good point WS - we've just beaten the Crows at AAMI FFS, and besides the Magpies there ain't nothin scary out there! Time to fire up and look forward to the rest of the season.:thumbsu:

Did a thread about this last week

In 1991 the first season the bye was introduced last time around, only one team won after having byes the previous week in the first 12 rounds - happened to be the eagles

Team with byes in rounds 13-24 won about 2/3 of the time

Bottom line:

Early byes can hurt you, but byes later on in the season are very beneficial

1992/1993 teams dealt with byes better and it was something like 2/3 won after byes overall in both seams (similar stats for first half and second half)

Early byes (1-11 rounds) would be beneficial more for large volume travelling teams rather than less travelled teams so I think we should be ready for a byes in round 6.

I see it as a big advantage playing 3 teams in a row coming off byes, particularly this early in the season where getting matches into the players is paramount and lack of season match fitness can quickly turn into early losses & reduced confidence.

The Bulldogs is even more interesting as it's almost like two byes - I doubt they'd get too much valuable match-day experience from playing the Gold Coast then having a bye then coming to Perth to play us (who will be fresh as anything having not travelled and having had 2x8 day breaks in a row)

Ideally you'd want it the other way around, (to have bye and then play the suns) as if you were flat it wouldn't be as hard to get back in to the game

I would not at all be surprised if we sit at 4-1 by the time our bye comes around

Also: Nurries, you're probably right about traveling teams utilising the bye better - as you can use the bye to extend to recovery time and preparation time from the game, as well as travel, whereas if you had a bye and stayed in Melbourne and had been there for the first few rounds before that, the recovery time after the game would be very short as there would be no travel, leaving more room for error and increase the likelihood of the team losing focus

More travel means more need for rests - if you don't travel and get a week off you likely get bored and lose focus quicker (I remember holidays during my uni days when I didn't get much work how draining it was doing nothing, whereas now that I'm working I make the extra time off count)

i think its too early to know if facing teams after a bye is beneficial to us or not. if a 7 day break is better then a 6 day break wouldnt a 14 day break be even better?

i think teams would benefit if they had an intraclub scratch match on the weekend of their bye just to keep match fitness up but only play say half a game to try help avoid injury.

thoughts?

lol good idea but we all know how fond the wafl are of a dockers invasion

I think it is pretty ordinary attention to detail from the afl to have us playing 3 teams after their byes consecutively. Whether it is an advantage or not, that just should not happen.

they're too busy making sure that collingwood play as many home games as possible

Sounds like you're pretty confident about knocking over the dogs in a couple of week's time....even though we've had your measure for a while. Is it because you think your team has improved on last year or do you think the dogs have gone backwards?

It's that we are trying to be more hopeful of breaking our long run of losses against your mob.

Your mob won't be coming off the best preperation.

A 9 goal loss against essendon, a 13 goal win against brisbane, a 12 goal win against Gold Coast and now the bye. Theres no fitness like match fitness and those game are unlikely to have given you much. If we can stay with you in the first 3 quarters we should be able to pull away in the last. But then again a week is a long time in football.
