Went drinking last night. Woke up today. Knew it was late. Went to scramble out of bed to get ready for work...

...then realised I was in somebody else's bed*. In somebody else's house. On the other side of the river.

Had to make the call. You know the call.

'Yeah... I can't come in today. Sorry.'

'Are you unwell?'

'Yeah, basically'.

God I hate making that call.

If only I was a little bit less weak of character and could SMS in my absence. The kids of today have it so easy.

(*No I didn't sexytime her apparently. I know, I know, I let the team down. The walk of shame home was my penance. STFU.)

Ahh yes, so happy my supervisor prefers to SMS. Quick text message if I'm not feeling up to it in the morning then back to sleep :D

You have mod powers.

Check it. And then apologise for being an asswipe.

You don't deserve the name 'Don Draper'. That character is an hero of sorts. What are you?

Nuthin.

Why so ultra defensive?

Not my problem that you couldn't get the job done, come on BF, post another ridiculous thread that has to include you staying away from home. Is it because you struggle with the women and when any form of pick up occurs you must jump on here and brag to the 'boys'?

You bastard, how I envy you.

I hate doing the call, even if I am genuinly sick. Just makes me feel guilty about it.

Yep, I work in the motor trade so even if you're dying you get shit for weeks about it.

My boss pretty well expects that if I'm sick, I can't be sick enough for me to get ready for work, get all the way there so he can send me home.

Have to disagree there. I don't cop it when someone texts me, I call them straight away. If they're genuinely sick, they won't have a problem calling me.

Text is a sign of weakness and a sure sign of someone lying.

Reckon it’s completely naive to expect people never to take a fake sickie. We’ve all done it. If it happens a once or twice a year, so what?

Anybody who’s abusing it and taking excess days off is easy to spot anyway, whether they’re calling or texting. They’re easy to deal with. You just go up to them the next day and start a really serious conversation about their sickness (like take them into an office and go completely OTT). How they’re feeling... if everything is ok... whether they’ve seen a doctor... whether there’s anything work can do to help... you've been sick quite a bit, are you sure you're ok??? Is it something to do with work or your lifestyle??

They stop calling in sick after that.

If I receive a text message off someone calling in sick it doesn't bother me too much. It is pretty easy to tell whether or not it is bullshit, and generally if I think it's bullshit I will just take note & get pissed off if it starts happening often. Every now & then is okay.

About 6 months into my first full time job I called up at 9am to call in sick (actually sick) for a 4pm shift. Didn't go well.

Me: Hi, sorry but in really crook. Nose blocked, headache, coughing etc.
Boss: Haha yeah good one, see you at 4pm (hangs up)

Me: I wasn't joking, I'm actually sick.
Boss: Grab some cold and flu tablets on the way to work, keep the receipt and I'll petty cash them. See you at 4 (hangs up)

I see nothing wrong with unpaid sickies.

Casual employees have the right to do what they like.

Those getting paid to take sickies might find themselves in hot water if they do it too much but legally I still see no problem with it. These worker rights aren't allowed to be negotiated away, the people of Australia made sure of it by kicking Howard and his workchoices to the kerb.

You can still get terminated for unexplained absenses not backed up by medical documentation under the Fair Work Act. Long term illness with absense from work can also lead to termination. An employee can also request a worker attends a doctors appointment to detirmine if they can undertake their usual role. A worker is obliged to attend. If they cant undertake the inherent requirements of their role because of this sickness, an employer is not obligated to modify their role or provide alternative duties. ie can sack them.

Casuals who take sickies will probably get a call when they're due to come back to work telling them "theres not much work on at the moment, will call you when there is".

Casuals that don't really need the money don't need to care when they're told "there's not much work on".

Those that do will not be taking sickies or would have a full/part time job that locks in a better base wage.

I hate making "the call".
I always feel like the manager thinks im pulling a sickie
The two managers Ive had in my time at my current workplace, have both insisted on you making the call.
Even if you wake up crook at 5am, they don't want you to SMS, they want a call. Can't understand that. If i was manager, id much rather a text than a phone call waking me up at some godly hour

How well disguised is your BF identity? (Does yo' boss frequent these forums?)

The worst is the people who call in with their terrible “sick” voices. Sound like they’re drifting in and out of consciousness and can’t string a coherent sentence together... because they’ve got the runs.

WTF is this? Are you in grade 5 and trying to get your mum to give you a day off? Pretty sure nobody’s going to pull you up based on how you sound... unless a full pub can be heard in the background or something.

I hate that stuff.

There are 4 or 5 women in the office that are always sick. And cos there women, being regularly sick seems to be accepted by management. They also get off easy with the old kid is sick, has to take kid to dentist, dog needs to go to vet. But when a young male calls in sick they get guilty looks of sin. Sick of these beeches.
