I saw the big fella at my local last nite at the lower plenty when having a beer .
He is looking very fit :thumbsu: its ok he was on the softies.
he was saying as i asked him what possie was he going to play and he said alot more at chf.
he belives a top 5 finish is realistic in 09

One of my favourite players at the club because even though he isn't the most skillful or talented tall in the AFL, he always tries his best and when he does he is more then serviceable. Had a fantastic year and he can only get better. Nice to hear him looking optimistic towards 2009 :thumbsu:

Good to hear. CHF is definitely the position he needs to play if he's to be in our team in 2 years time - particularly if Special K, Hammo and Warnock develop as expected. The only role i can see him playing when we're a 'contender' is that Earl Spalding 'crash and bash' CHF.

I have really become a big fan of Cloke. His work ethic at the club has been exemplary since he arrived & you know that you are going to get 100% effort every time he runs out on to the ground.

His game against Brisbane at the Gabba showed what he has to offer as a forward & I really think Ratts has to persevere with him as a permanent forward. He will get taken advantage of every now & then, as he was in Round 22, when Hodge ran off him, but it is up to Ratts to stick to his guns & be proactive in changing the match ups when this happens, instead of benching Cloke as he did in that game.

As suggested by Blue Dawn, Cloke is very capable of playing an Earl Spalding-type role in the forward line, particularly if he continues to work hard on his fitness as he has done, so far at Carlton. I would even go as far as to suggest that Cloke could end up a better player than Spalding, as he is more of a naturally gifted player than what Spalding was. Maybe I am being overly optimistic, but the kid has improved in his 2 years at our club & coming up to 24 years of age, is just heading towards the years in which most players play their best football.

hate to sound negative, but the only thing i'm worried about is the run off half back type like hodge did to him in round 22.

i think he will be very good this year, looks like he's working hard early which is fantastic stuff, works on the goal kicking and he'll have a great year.

Unfortunately Ratts 'ran up the white flag' very early in that game. I thought he should have thrown Walker or Gibbs onto Hodge & made him more accountable, because both players are dangerous around goal & have a defensive aspect to their game.

Cloke should have been pushed to the goal square, forcing Clarkson to put Gilham on him, or having to sacrifice one of his ruckmen. Ratts will learn from this sort of thing, remembering of course this was only his 28th game as an AFL coach.

I wouldn't read too much, or even anything, into that particular game of footy. It was nothing but a circus that day.

I thought it may have just been my one eyed optimism but with everyone else concurring i do see some great qualities in cloke that suggest he could be a good fwd. Being honest he will never be jonathon brown, but a few things make me like clokey as a fwd...

- great hands. he takes a ripping grab, has really clean hands and can get up for the big one too.

- lovely kick. really good set shot. not sure about his field kicking??????

- work ethic. never stops trying and always gives it his all.

- he is a great size, around 196cm for a big power fwd.

If he can get it together as a fwd, he should ease some of the attention off fev and give us a target to bomb to at the very least.

I however can't see him spending a hell of a lot of time up fwd in 2009 as i still see him needed in the ruck to protect our young ruckman from becoming the next josh fraser, who was exposed early and now has a wrecked body.

Hawthorn have a knack of pushing back how many necessary to ensure that Hodge remains free/on the preferred match up.

Cloke already is a fairly underrated player even by some of Carlton's own. But he has willingness to improve and get better that goes without saying. If he can kick 40 goals next year then I say to opposition coaches. Watch out because Cloke is coming on faster than limewire.

he won me over that game he took the massive hit & tried to chase the play, even as he passed out.

Absolutely!!!:thumbsu:
Showed huge ticker that day and I have been a fan ever since

That lower plenty is packed these days. Used to go there for beers 15+ years ago and it was OK but drove past the other week and people everywhere!!! Might need to revisit

Can the same be said about the Cats 4 weeks later in the GF when Hodge ran amok??

I love the attitude and work ethic from him and hope he can hold down CHF for us.

PS; I hated his old man who was a filthy mongrel - I suppose thats where Cam gets his aggression from though!!!

I felt very safe when Cloke had the ball in front of goal............

Generally a very good field kick and has hit Fev lace out on a few occassions. I still cant forget the point he kicked from the goal square 2 years Vs Essenscum in pre-season game after taking a big grab in the goal square (thankfully I haven't seen anything similar since).

yeah that was such an awesome effort. He won over a lot of us with that i reckon

He sure did, and his attitude to getting himself into shape and staying that way cant be questioned. Really hope that he can be that target across half forward that we are missing, one player i would love to see go on and play alot of games for Carlton.

Thats what got me going for him...

Wasnt to happy picking him up from the filth... but that effort showed that he really wants to succeed and will put his body on the line when it matters and thats the sort of player the club had been missing for a couple of years :D

Yep...that and also ripping into his brother and giving him an earful when he gave the 50m penalty away...loved it.

Cam could be a huge factor this year, moreso in terms of structure than actual output. If he can contest hard, and draw a big defender at all times it will mean a lot for our structure. It means opposition teams can't just drop guys back in the hole in front of Fev, and also guys like Fish and Walker will get the third and fourth string defenders.
