I don't disagree, I think he should be at 5 - I've stated that in here.

He shouldn't be at 4 yet, though. Maybe one day; but moving Smith out of 4 for Green is a ludicrous suggestion. One day he might be the ideal 3 or 4. But right now, absolutely not.

Again, though, I'd be ok with him at 5 now. I think he's a more natural no.5 than Head who I think is an ideal no.6.

I didn't say they should move Smith out of 4 and move Green there. I just said Green would be better suited to that position in the long term.

And I agree about Head. He is the perfect number 6.

It's been suggested in here so that's my contention to it now. But agree with the long-term view.

I would love to see that change with Head but I doubt they'll do it.

the australian selectors have for awhile had this kind of viewpoint of

1) two openers
2) Rank the remaining batsman
3) batting order = rank

So the reason why Head bats at 5 is because he is seen behind Labs and Smith at test level but better than Green.

Its not really how it should work.

Wouldn't Smith be batting 3 if that were true?

my counter point would be we moved Ponting to no.3 after he didn't set the world on fire at 6. Sometimes you need to select on talent and potential + the achknowledgement that no.6 is a tough role, which is why averaging over 40 is pretty unusual.

I think Green has a lot of promise, and he has a very good domestic record. His Test career has been nothing special to date and any comparison with Ricky Ponting is just ludicrous (even allowing for how biased posters from a particular area are).

Ponting hit 96 on debut, averaged nearly 50 at number 6 and hit seven centuries from 33 Tests.

Green averages 35 with one century from 20 Tests.

The rest of our batters average above 45 - those blokes who apparently should change their role to accommodate a markedly inferior batsman.

Congrats young man

I've had my doubts, but hopefully this can be the catalyst to kickstart his test career because he's got the talent to be our #4 for a decade

So much power with the bat.
Looks to be a long term white ball player for Australia. Maybe even future captain.
the dude is 26, still plenty of time for him in long term cricket.

With his temperament, agree, he could be a future captain

Thought I would bump this thread again

As you all know I have followed Greenie since day dot..watching him early days for WA where he was picked as a bowler...7 wickets on debut then making tons batting in the lower order against QLD and then becoming a top batter in the shield..seeing him get picked for OZ...his injury out for 12 months ...etc

But I think we are at a watershed moment in regards to his career

I am just so frustrated atm we are not seeing him making the jump into a top line cricketer...yes he has scored a few tons taking wickets with the ball ..one of the best gully fielders the game has seen

But he is not improving and not doing what I thought he would be after 30 odd tests....the duck today after his pathetic shot in qld after his 45 was just bad just bad bad bad .....batting pitch weather hot everything in his favour to score runs and he weakly gets out again ...this 2nd innings is going to be huge for him going forward

With his bowling they use him very poorly...cummins told him to bounce everyone which contributed to his injury...and when he comes on its always with the older ball and when he gets a wicket always gets taken off

I honestly dont know what to do with him....drop him ??...but he will dominate the shield he just will

keep backing him...good cricketers in the wings like webbie

so frustrated atm with his career and where he should be

thoughts ?

Keep backing him, but **** what a waste today. Not just him to be fair, Labs and Khawaja (albeit after a great knock under pressure) both threw their wickets away on an otherwise good (if slow) deck.

He's a confidence player, he'll get another shot in the 2nd albeit on a tougher pitch by then. Hopefully he can compile a solid 2nd innings 50+ and get some confidence back.

He’s playing like a bloke that knows he won’t be dropped. Bit like some of the English guys who are just throwing wickets away and there’s no consequences

I’m a big fan of Green but he’d want to shape up soon. Webster performed really solidly when he got the chance and is unlucky to be out of the team. I’m sure he would do well again if given another opportunity

We're probably at the stage where Cam needs to ditch the ball and commit to being a batsman.

As said, you really can't drop him because he is just going to make a mockery of the shield.

Another cam myth is he makes 100s for fun at shield level, guys played 4 games in 4 years at that level.

the other myth well stev waugh took 20 tests to make it.

Truth is he avgs 34 after 35 tests and is playing as a batsman just not good enough an i'll lead the train tp dumb him with Kane Cornes.

Simply not up to it currently as a batsman. And can't see him improving if dropped because with this pay day why would he worry about playing any form of shield cricket.

But we will continue with him because he is the new golden child of Australian cricket
