... because a) he can't get off strike, or b) he goes too hard at a ball inside his first 20 balls.

These are symptoms of an eminently fixable problem: that he doesn't have a safe method to get going.

... which is why you have a plan. The plan gets you going and lets you work out the conditions and the bowling in safety.

It's frustrating, for sure.
This is spot on

He starts his innings as though he is 25*

One of my coaches said that batters had to develop a 20 ball plan to get themselves through the start of their innings. Be clear on what line they play at, what line they don't. What length they hit through, what length they defend.

And to practice this every single time they play an innings or hit in the nets. Never deviate from it

How is he batting ahead of Carey? Should try batting at 7, that might mentally kick start him
Think at the very least he should bat at 6. Got moved up the order way to soon. Putting him at 3 was madness. It's the most important spot in the lineup.

On another note. How is Marnus travelling? Dropped for the Windies, made loads of runs at domestic level, now struggling again. Seems to tighten up a lot now and just look to survive. I'm never confident when he is in. Looks like the worst batter in the team, except when he can throw the bat like the second dig in Perth when playing a support act to Trav.

As great as Carey is playing, and as much as I rate him, it is an indictment on any specialist batter that the keeper is batting ahead of them. Jury out on Inglis too for mine, but has had less of an opportunity than others.

My opinion with Green is they should simplify his role. Bat at 6. Establish yourself as a good bat. Didn't Hussey and Punter start at 6 from memory?

He looks like the kinda player that if he got some form with the bat, his bowling would improve due to confidence. At the moment he doesn't fit in. He needs to feel like he belongs at the level imo.

I would look to bring Webster in personally. Green will feature in a lot for Australia in the future, but he shouldn't be gifted games on potential. Selection integrity is important. He isn't performing at the standard, and we have a like for like replacement.

first of all i'll start by saying i'm a massive green fan.

he has the 2nd best first class batting average behind smith, but is failing to capitalise in the test arena.

the allrounder seems to cop a lot of flack such as watson, marsh etc and green has fallen into the same category after 35 tests and is no better than a test number 6.

i am on record saying that i believe he can be a test number 5, an hopefully he still can be.

thankfully we are still winning games and just maybe green will play melbourne and sydney.

smith and webster are the spare bats in the squad and with a couple of others under scrutiny (khawaja, inglis, weatherald (ave 26) - although likely to get the remainder of the series at a minimum).

while carey is in a purple patch, i still think green at 6, carey at 7 is our best look and with a genuine bat at 5. if we arent careful people will want carey dropped if he gets a few low scores - leave the guy at 7. problem is number 5 if head is going to open as inglis, carey, webster are not number 5's.

maybe usman bats out the series at 5 with green/carey behind him for melbourne and sydney.

otherwise we back the green dog in at 5, put away the bowling somewhat and let him prosper and we can afford a webster at 6.

His bowling is good enough that it would be a real loss to the side if only batting was concentrated on.

I think people are still writing Green off too quickly. Was our best batter in the windies, looked good for his 45 the other night. Admittedly has played too rubbish shots but not sure if that is warranted dropping. I have more question marks over Inglis than Green.

I dont think many are writing him off just that his reputation out weighs his output and there are probably others more deserving of a spot currently. He certainly isnt in the best six batsman in the country.

The talk that we can base our side around him for the next ten years was a stretch but he will play plenty of good test cricket.

Selection of batters has been all over the shop in the past couple of years.

If it's between Green and Renshaw you back in Green and i don't want Green in the team, Cooprt Connolly is the one i want in
Cooper isn’t ready yet, don’t pick him and feel stuck giving him time while he develops.

Go to Webster and let Green and Cooper make runs and shield and pick whoever demands selection when they are ready

How can you say Cooper isn't ready when he has played already and is in the one day team lol ? Our next tests are 8 months away. SA is going to be a massive test let the kid have it and bat webster at 7 over inglis

Problem with dropping cricketers is that it normally causes way more issues - many tend to fall even further away. They don’t go back & “work on” their technique flaws, they just sulk & have sources whinge to the media about being dropped.

While we’re winning there’s an argument to be made to keep the youngest player in the team in. I hate this cricket mentality but I’m also accepting that it is the way it is.

Talks of bringing in Cooper Connolly are 100% going to end the same way in 12-24 months lol that’s just crazy talk

Because he wasn’t ready when he got picked and playing one day cricket is very different to test team.
