On Saturday,Wayne Campbell played his 282nd game for the Yellow and Black.

If he was to play every match in the home and away fixture he will finish on 297.

If we made the finals he could possibly play his 300th.
If we dont he will finish on 297 (provided he is used sparingly thru the season and lasts injury free)

Supposedly he is retiring at seasons end.

Question is, would we be carrying him if he were to play on in 2006
or do you think he would be able to hold his own ?

I say we keep him or at least give him the option to play again.

I guess it's a matter of his body and how it holds out.

He has a good career, but is now too slow and holds the ball up too much. He seems like the kind of guy where once his mind is made up he won't change it anyway, so I doubt he'll play on next year now that he's publicly announced this is his last.

Good points TS.

It has lots of team/club value adds besides the personal milestone.

I don't love him or hate him but I think it would be a shame for him not to get to the 300 personally as well as something for the team and club to celebrate. In these days is so much loose loyalty on both sides its a pretty big achievement and a great example for some of the kids that we really wanna keep. I think the more of this stuff a kid gets involved in the more passion he develops for his club and the more he wants to be a part of it.

How often do we get a chance to recognise a 300 game player? Who was the last and how long ago?

Good question.
Couldn't be Flea could it ?

yes he's a bit slow now but what value do you place on his footy brain out there, marshalling the youngsters, calming Richo down after he marks etc etc. Also I think he is the best set shot at goal in the whole side (maybe Pettifer also)

i'd like to see him get it in the granny this year and as a bonus the almighty
grail he has been seeking all his career, what a story book ending that would be! ;)

Hopefully, he will play his 300th in the Grand Final - if he's selected lol ;)
See how the year pans out and his fitness etc, and ask us then.

Okay.....I'll ask you then.

I voted no, I don't think he'll be able to maintain the standard he is at now for another year. I don't think he would be interested himself in playing on just to reach a milestone, he would need to convince himself and the coach that he is good enough to play all year. I also don't want to see him running around out there looking well past it, there's nothing worse than seeing a club great running around looking a shadow of their former selves.

Right now he offers the team a lot and deserves his spot, he also has a lot of value at the club in teaching the kids how to play. He doesn't need to reach 300 to be considered a champion for the club, he's already done that. By the start of next season our kids will have plenty more games under their belt and someone will be stepping up to take his place.

Does that mean we have to make the grand final for Cambo to play 300?

Hopefully we go really well this year and win the flag.

Then again, if we don't, then I'd still expect him to retire. He'd still be admitted to the 300 club I think as he's played a few state and international games that supposedly count.

Best to play well this year and be remembered affectionately (by some/most).

I think Clokey might have been the last to notch up 300 when playing for us

yep !

id leave it up to him. i know he would do what he thinks is best for the club. i dont want another knights enforced retirement again.

I just want to say one thing.

We wont win the flag... I think we have to think about what we are saying. The chances of us winning the flag is so extreme it isnt funny.

Lets just take it one week at a time and not get ahead of ourselves.

Collingwood are coming off a belting and no matter how bad they are, they will be out to play IMO. Not something to take lightly.

yeah Francis was the last one to play all 300 games for the yellow and black.

Whilst I would love to see Cambo play 300 games I think he should call it a day at year's end.

He'd still be good enough to be in our 22 next year IMO, even if he had to carry a walking cane onto the field to do it.

But he already gets bagged so much for not being up to it and it would only get worse next year. Such a good player shouldn't have to cop that.

Agreed a very very good Richmond player over the years, after 14 years he should be allowed to choose when to call it quits.

And whilst I wouldn't begrudge him for going on, there is no shame in finishing your career amongst names like Weightman and Knights. It is appropriate in a way that our 300 gamers - Dyer, Bartlett and Bourke are something of a holy trinity - true legends - probably only Royce Hart generating debate about them being the top three tigers of all time (from purely anecdotal references - I was born in '82).

Very good point as well jake. You don't want your Campbells sharing the pedestal with legends like Dyer, Bartlett and Bourke.

He has his place in RFC history and it's a peg below the all time greats. Its fitting for his game tally to reflect that.

I understand your sentiment boys but realistically , should that dictate whether a bloke goes on or not ? Form , fitness and desire are the only things to consider.

Romance is one thing but there should not be a sub commitee that makes a decision as to whether or not a player is " worthy " enough to join our 300 club .

In any case , history will probably show Wayne Campbell a better Richmond man than KB

Ultimately sentiment shouldn't dictate whther he goes on, but since he is going to retire anyway, you'd have to say its fitting in a way.
