Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

And added Frost and Patton and Hartley. Also using rookie list spots for Brooksby and Minchington. Have to use first round picks twice every 4 years to stay in the mix to trade future picks. Weren't many big name trades last year anyway. Kelly was only going to WC and I don't think Hawthorn wanted to pay Brad Hill's asking price.

Day and Maginness might end up stars but they won't be stars overnight. If you are starting a rebuild via the draft strategy in 2019 then what does it say for your 27-30+ year old players?
I mean we gave up very little to get those 3 players, they clearly wanted to get some more young talent in and did that through the Draft. We gave up not much to get some guys who we hoped could be low risk/ high reward players.

You might want to read the posts from Hawks fans up until maybe a month or two ago. Embarrassing the way they drank it all in and couldn't see what the rest of us could.

It is easy to dig the boots in when we have a string of poor games, but it tends to be crickets here when we are travelling better. We've added Tom Mitchell to a team that late last year was beating most of the teams going deep into finals in 2019. We should be doing better than we are now. It is not really old blokes falling off a cliff, we're just not getting enough out of the entire squad, including younger guys who should be peaking at the 25-28 age bracket. Several of these have gone backwards from last year. Mentally fragile right now. You can see it when they take the game on at the start of the first and second half, and look ok, but then straight back into their shells as soon as the opposition puts some pressure back on us.

Day looks amazing.

But it's hard to see Mitchell, O'Meara and Wingard providing the same kind of long term value, which is why if the rest of your team isn't up to it you go back to the draft.

You lose a few games (no need to tank or be hopeless, just miss finals), get rewarded with higher draft picks, turn the list over looking for bargain finds in the state leagues and reclaimed players and you build the side back up.

Anyway, long may Hawthorn keep trading for older players and not drafting. I don't want to see more Day types playing for them!

By the end of next week when Sydney beat Hawthorn, it’s welcome to Hawthorn picks 3 and 20.

Unexpected result for mine. I thought it'd be another game where Melbourne win the ball around the stoppages but are inneficient going forward allowing the Hawks to score on the rebound.

Obviously they were miles off tonight but they need to get another player capable of taking the game on in the back 6.

Have to feel for Sam Mitchell come 2023...he’s literally going to have nothing to work with at all...

no key forwards, no small forwards, a slow and weak midfield, no key defenders.

Other than chad Wingard, we literally have 0 players with “x factor” and star quality.

Hopefully our supporters will finally start seeing things clearly and realise how cooked our team is.

sammy is midfield coach. How’s that going?

All of a sudden early picks in the draft are good?
Sorry, I'm a bit confused. For years, all I've heard from Hawthorn fans is that draft picks are overrated
I mean they are still overrated. Proven players > picks when you can get them and at the right price.

‘we never got any? The call is that from 10 onwards, they might as well be 26ish onwards. Hawks haven’t had a sub 10 pick in forever

Our midfield is bottom 3 in the AFL so not great, but that’s not Sam’s fault.

He can only coach what he has...he has a “pure” midfield unit of Tom Mitchell, James Worpel, jaeger Omera and Liam Shiels...not one of those players can kick, not one of them can break the lines and not one of them kicks goals.

Wait until he becomes senior coach when Clarko finishes at the end of 2022...he’s in for a world of pain.

I guarantee if he ever was you would be right there critiquing every move.

Tom mitchell was an unbackable Brownlow medalist 3 years ago

I never said he wasn’t a good player. He will take at least 18 months to get anywhere near the level he was when he won the Brownlow medal.

There’s a good chance he never gets back to that level.

However, he can’t kick and doesn’t kick goals and he’s our number 1 midfielder. That there is a huge issue. He would be just about every other teams number 3 or 4 midfielder.

Omera has been a disaster...there is no other way to look at it...he would be worth a late second round pick at best if he was traded tomorrow. Look what we paid for him. He’s a average to decent player that plays one excellent game every 4-5 games. That’s 5 excellent games a season. He should be our clear number 1 mid and he isn’t even close.

Personally I think outside runners is more of an issue. We always look much better when they are cracking on.

and pre season we were debating at length how we’d fit all the talls in. Now there’s just Frawley McEvoy and a recovering lewis. Nice problems to have
