Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Forecasting 5-10 years is nonsense. The only thing that is known about Hawthorn is that they aren't very good now. If you want to look ahead 5 years it's pretty safe to suggest that everyone older than Tom Mitchell probably won't still be there.

But 5 years is an eternity. I've seen my own team go from 3rd last to premiers to last in the space of 10 seasons. And then we made a GF 5 years after that.

As of Sunday, you saw your team go from 4th last to deserved Premiership Favorites in 4 weeks :) I stuck with WCE as my Premiership Fav even though I only got $7 when they went out to a lot more but now at $5.50 I'm happy again.

There you go, all you need is 4 weeks to rebuild.

Always thought it would be interesting if at random of the 10 most active supporters of each club on bigfooty one of those supporters each year is in charge of their teams trading and drafting for that year. Would shake things up a bit.

Should have done that this year, throw in COVID, weekly rule interpretation changes and get supporters coaching and then BT and co. can spruik it on the telly telling us all how only the most 'agile' and 'resilient' teams will win the flag, it will be the greatest premiership ever! Oh wow wee.

"I'm not complaining about the hub, our players aren't complaining about it, but it's made it very, very difficult for us to find our best form and for us to try and turn around what has been pretty scratchy form."

- Alastair Clarkson

I think a big part of the problem is Clarko's inability to deal with the list as is, because it feels like every week he has a new excuse as to why they aren't winning and it's never the teams fault. Umpires, the hub, other players staging for frees, Geelong being "not that good"

If he just took an objective look at his playing list I think he'd see the real problem.

Agree. Never complain. Never explain.

Hang on you said he is just listing excuses instead of taking blame but the whole ‘Geelong aren’t that hood’ was him saying we were dog shit...

Not that I am knocking Clarkson or anything as I firmly believe he is the best coach in the league but the last Hawthorn flag was almost 5 years ago now, and it is great that your fans want to continue thinking about it, I would in your situation but at a certain point those flags are no longer relevant to the discussion as the 2020 Hawthorn team is very different to the one that won the flag in 2015. Everything has moved on in that time and Hawthorn fans and Clarkson himself trying to hold onto the past, or trying to extend the era with makeshift solutions is not going to do Hawthorn any good in the long run.

Brisbane tried it, not realising where their list actually was, and it led them down a path of terrible performances for a decade.

How is a fan hanging on to the past going to have any affect whatsoever on the team?

Clarko doing it would, sure, but you dont actually believe he is do you?

the best measure is against opponents. The start of 2020 and the end of 2019 had convincing wins over rated opposition. But there seems to be less motivation against so called low teams.

that a motivation issue. Only getting motivated against stronger challenges

Ok mate-

You have been average for 5 years and your list might look completely different in another 5 years but it will still probably be toilet because unlike most clubs you have not got young players who are any good. "but but but Will Day's shown a bit! DAYPEDO! DAYPEDO!". No he's shown as much about any other first year player.

10 years maybe a bit "pessimistic" as they say but then Hawthorn Football Club is aka Hawthorn Retirement Home so there's a fair chance you'll still at least some of your potatos running around. They sure do stick around in yellow and brown!

Are you enjoying Melbourne missing the finals again? Yeah, worry about your own team.

Hawthorn’s two best performances this year against Brisbane and Richmond have been at the MCG. Coincidence? I don’t think so. Hawthorn haven’t lost a game at the MCG since June last year.

The hub has played a part in the Hawks being average this year. That’s a fact. Would Hawthorn have won those games if they were played at the MCG?

During the time Hawks piled on 4 premierships Demons are probably second to Carltank in terms of having access to elite end draft picks. What has that delivered? Don’t give me any of this we are closer to a premiership rubbish because it means nothing! Tonight the Demons looked like shitt, so far off the pace. Yeah Hawks need to follow the Demons and Carltank path as it guarantees success.

The two kids that the Demons picked before Day look ordinary especially the midget one or did he not play?

Top picks Scully, Trengove, Grimes, Cook, Morton, Gysberts, Tapscott, Watts, Toumpas, Strauss, Blease all busted Demons first rounders. There's probably a heap more.
All those players picked while we were winning flags.

No, we would have lost anyway. Our problems run deep.
