Thought of this thread when I saw this article on the ABC website today:

Yes that article pretty well sums up this thread.

All except that there was no graphs on Clarko Factor, Destination Club (ability to attract players) and But we are Hawthorn Quotient which were the main counter arguments, but which are also all on the wane.

Because they had these pillars (plus Mitchell pick 35) they were able to bring in a support cast in.

Richmond and West coast both have a core of players formed by top 20 picks.

Not every club who hits the draft hard is successful, but every club that is successful does have picks in the top 20 they have actually used and helped form a core of a side.

In saying all this hawks have done good inclusions this week and wouldn’t be surprised if they turn it on against us.

Doesn’t change the fact that their trajectory is downwards though.

Not after Hawthorn tank for the remainder of this year and secure picks 3,21,41,49. This is the best hand Hawthorn will take to the draft in 14 years!!! It will be pick 2 when North Melbourne beat Adelaide.

Mitch Lewis is incredibly underdone, needs a solid block of training to get fit. Has no business playing AFL footy at the moment.

Happy with our inclusions this week.
However, Burgoyne, Scully and Stratton playing while Finn, Jones, Jiath and Moore are still biding time in the scratch matches is a little hard to swallow. That proves to me that Clarko is still overrating our best 22.

Burgoyne was fine last week - not so the other two. Jones in for Scully and Jiath in for Stratton would at least be something. But my guess is Stratton won't get dropped while he's still captain.

Injuries and no VFL for him to get his confidence back.

Teams flying will fly. Teams struggling will struggle. And there isnt much that can be done about that.

My argument was it is eminently possible for a club that is a modern powerhouse to spend many, many years in the wilderness. Essendon a perfect example.

I don't think Hawthorn will get it all correct. If they did they could win one in 10 years, but they won't - so no flag for them this decade in my opinion. The list is so broken they won't be able to fix it enough to win a flag. There is too much tail chasing going to happen in the 2020s for the HFC.
