Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

Last season with injuries to key backs he played most of the year at CHB and did very well.

This year with Howard and Carlisle both available and fully fit, has been forward and wing and general utility in the forward line and midfield. In 208 his 6 games were mainly as a forward.

Rats sees him as a utility player. His tank is Riewoldt like and so can run all day.

Don't forget Howard. Ryder was the "steak knives" in gaining Howard. We now have a back 6 in 2020 where all are good both offensively or defensively. Prior to 2020 players were often one of the other.

Yes Rats is our most important "recruit".

Many years of poor and often down right odd recruiting, but 2016 St Kilda turned the corner. Though 2015 did net both Carlisle and Gresham, but with Freeman trade a bust.

PS. We still lack one true gun inside mid. Though Steele is hitting his straps, but he needs a gun buddy in addition to Gresham as a sidekick.

Thanks for the details. A good example where trading can be better than only drafting. It cost you 2019 pick 6 and 2020 2nd and 3rd so for your sake let’s hope St Kilda win a flag soon or there may be a thread: “can St Kilda succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?” 😁😁

Case in point tonight's game against the Suns. Just lack that Lenny Hayes type in the midfield. The type of mid who can wrest the play back your way when things are just not quite clicking.

PS. No Butler, no win against the Suns.

Congrats. Now we are going to the elite end of the draft. Thread is pintless

In the most compromised draft ever with no under age football...could not be a worse season to finish bottom 4.

Hopefully now our supporters can finally admit we are cooked and just accept it.

Other than young Will Day who looks a real talent, there is NOTHING else to be excited about.

I actually cannot believe how pathetic Omera is. He goes at under 50% every game and plays one good game every 5-6 weeks. He cannot kick and thinks he’s dusty Martin. Wingard is no better. Those two trade decisions have destroyed us. How any of our supporters can’t see it is incredible.

Watch next week... out Smith: In: Puopolo.

Another harsh reality check for the Hawks.

Last week does now look like an aberration..
It's not a reality check, we knew where we were going in to last week and we knew going in to this week.

Trust you to find the silver lining. Just keep selecting all the challengable players, one after the other, essendon style. you either get one or your second pick keeps moving up the board

Tell me what is incorrect with what I said??

We traded 3 picks- a first and two second round picks for a player with a shocking knee injury. Omera is a B grader and will never be anything more. He can’t kick!!

Then two years later we traded one of our ONLY quality young players + a first round pick in an incredibly strong draft for a “cream” on the top player....

How can you and others keep trying to justify what’s gone on in recent seasons...

The “but we won a three peat” means jack **** now.

OMG dude it is the complete and utter dead beat attitude you have towards this club. The rush to this thread to trash our entire list by half time of most games is sad. Negativity is fine but i can not recall ever seeing you speak glowingly.

I have been pretty clear over the past month, the rebuild looks like it is destined to fail. I am totally okay with what we attempted though. We probably overpaid for both but the Wingard trade is so overblown. A solid injury prone player in Burton would not be spoken about anywhere near as glowingly if he was still at the club.

the guy was like WC judd at GC then he did his knee and he became Carlton Judd without being willing to put his head over the ball. Sad he has ended up like this.

Not if Clarko trades the pick for another 25-26 year old. He made it clear in the press conference after your loss against Sydney that he still wants to trade experience in, and basically said youth is overrated.

It's a pattern entrenched over several seasons. Since the shock loss to Melbourne late in 2016, Hawthorn is 14-16 when 1.5+ years older than the opposition. The average team wins two-thirds of such games; indeed the Hawks - champion team that they were - had won 42 of their previous 47, including 25 on the trot. No matter what you say or I say, Hawthorn is not going to buck those percentages without major change.

+1.68 tonight

Dead men comin' through.

Cant wait for the excuse this week. We’ve had poor kicking, umpires, the ground being too small what’s next?
You missed the excuse from 90% of our fans that we are not very good?

Haven't you guys spent the past few years justifying Clarko's list management strategy of trading the farm for older players?

In 2018, when Hawthorn traded the farm for Wingard in a superdraft year, (also brought in Scully), Port attacked said superdraft and picked up Rozee, Butters and Duursma. Even got Burton as a free bonus.

That's a yikes from me.

Freo have been drafting and trading for the future. Picks 7, 8, 9 last year, 11 and 17 + Hogan and Lobb last year, 2 and 5 + Wilson the year before, plus they've found some good young players with later picks. Were prepared to let Weller (young), Neale and Hill go for good deals as part of this. Not the team Hawthorn want to comfortably lose to in 2020.

And if we had a pick that could have picked up a Rozee maybe we would have kept it... Scully cost us nothing so irrelevant to mention.
