Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft?

That was an awesome performance extremely clinical. Even at home when eagles kicked those 4 or 5 quick lucky goals hawks were all over them. Going to be extremely interesting when a few senior players go what happens as they are still performing at a high level (serious statement). Who do hawks fan expect to lose for the 2021 season out of your senior team through retirement/form/age regression?
All the indications are the 2019-2020 clean out will be pretty big by our standards. Can’t speculate on 2020-2021.

I wouldn’t want to crystal ball this year though. Jeff sent a members email out basically saying to prepare for big change at the end of this year..

In all likelihood they still miss the finals in 2019 as many predicted. They've caused a few upsets, but still below quite a few teams.

I'm still not seeing evidence they will win the flag with a predominant recruitment over draft heavy list building approach.

Obviously things always have to go right to win a flag, but I can see us being a contender.
- Midfield has improved through guys like Worpel and Wingard. Add Mitchell (definite) and Coniglio (good possibility) and it would compete with any.
- Forward line has improved through Lewis and TOB. Add Patton, which looks likely. We still have good small and medium forwards.
- Defence has been good. Patton coming would allow us to throw TOB back there for another tall if needed. Impey would have to come back well and Scrimshaw hopefully stay injury-free.

That's just two new players and some others coming back from injury. Plus the comp is even, coaching is more important than ever and ours is an all-time great. I think we can contend.

Thread should be renamed: "will Hawthorn make the top 14?"

GWS and West Coast away still to come, and the Gold Coast can pip them on their day. Will Hawthorn win another game for the rest of the year?If they can't even beat North...

Oh dear. :$

Another quality prediction from Jobe Watson :rainbow:

change the title to "hawthorn fan main board circle jerk thread" already

This thread wasn't started by a Hawthorn fan. Considering Hawthorn supporters cop it on here each year it's only fair they dish it right back to those opposition supporters who keep rubbing it in.

By 2021, the only ones that might be gone are Smith, Burgoyne, Poppy and Frawley. Burgoyne is ageless, he could easily still be playing by then. Poppy and Smith can be replaced, they've been great but not generational players. Frawley, we obviously need a key back, but by then Kosi may be ready to step up. He's rated by those who watch Box Hill regularly.

Birchall and Roughie are two others that will be gone, but they've already been replaced by Scrimshaw and Lewis.

People also queried how we were going to replace Mitchell, Hodge and Lewis. We did ok with that.

I still think you guys will be impacted more than you think when these blokes leave. They have played 100s of games together you cannot coach that as good as clarkson is. More years into Bruest, Gunston, Mcevoy, Frawley and Ceglar etc. Who is the up and coming ruck? I don't disgree with that strategy and some of the players you have gotten are good players so will be very interesting to see how it goes when the aforementioned players retire/leave

Looks like SicilyGate (Rd 2) could cost us finals.

That rule enforced on that night has gone missing since, weird.
Im pretty sure i raged in Rd 2 saying this game will cost us finals. Proven right today.

Absolute farce to take the ball from hawthorn and awarding a set shot to Dogs in front of goals 2 times in a row when we were up and running away with the game.

For what fwd/def jostling..... ridiculous.

The ruling to be never seen again just backs me up.

Beat more / as many of the top 8 as any other team in the league, so the top draw performances are there.

Ultimately, losing 3 games to bottom 5 teams (Dees, Swans, Saints) was our problem. Consistency wasn’t there over the season

Don't think they've really succeeded. Missing finals with the oldest and most experienced list in the league isn't great.

Being a high pick doesn't guarantee anything but Duursma and Burton as high draft picks would be handy for Hawthorn right now to add to their late draft success stories.

We are in transition mate.
Can’t have it both ways. We are either too old and no future, or blew a chance with the oldest list in the comp. Which is it.

I think you ask the question in 2 years from now. I’m pretty comfortable with where we are at for the moment

Spot on.....
Amazing how things like that come back to bite. Many on our board thought just that.

But, at the end of the day we weren’t quite there. Losses to Saints, Swans and North killed us, especially when we were in a good position to win these games.

We will be stronger for it all next year.

To be fair Brad Johnson and Nick Dal Santo have been riding that horse for years.

Not surprising I guess given the relative success of the three teams they played for...

North (4 flags), Footscray (2 flags) and St Kilda (1 flag) across 310 years of collective VFL / AFL

Three of the best :)

Dare I say it, a hint of jealousy. The 2008 finals series must have cut deep

Those 3 clubs have something to be proud of. Collectively they’ve equaled Michael Tuck’s record of 7 flags

Not even 4 completed grand finals since we three peated, winning 4 from 8, losing another, losing a prelim and making another couple finals series and supporters of any club you'd care to name lining up to explain to the footy world how we are doing it wrong?
Beyond comprehension.

Free agency is upon us, it's taken a few years for it to bed in and everyone to understand it. Times are changing and will continue to change. Perhaps recruiters are learning that luring established 22-26 yo talent is more efficient than taking a risk in the draft and picking potentially another McGrath at number 1. In a decade from now I'm sure the way clubs recruit will be very different, time will tell and it's quite fascinating. Nothing stays the same.

Loving the path we are on. Can't win it every year. Will watch with interest the way we develop and alter our model over the coming years.

Best of luck to all the finalists. If you're in it, enjoy - it's good times.....
