I honestly don’t know for who exactly, but Hawthorn might end up trading that pick plus a player(s) to move up the draft order for this year.

For mine they don’t have to hit the mark or have the best team.

The players just need to fit into the structure and Clarkson will do the rest.

Clarkson has already fired a warning shot of sorts - with average teams they knocked over Collingwood, Geelong and WCE.

Jaeger, Mitchell, Wingard and Scrimshaw will be huge for us moving forward.

Looking past- Mcevoy, Henderson, Hale, Gibson, Frawley, Lake.

How else do you get a list which is worth more than everyone else? How do you get a Fyfe, Bontempelli, Martin etc into your club? Draft is by far the best route. A lot of premiership players on Richmond's list even got passed on in the draft and got picked up as rookies or pre-season picks.

Trades and free agency are for the cherries on top.

I think Hawthorn's strategy is a good one to remain solid but not a good one to get ahead.

No, they’re not ignoring elite talent. No club is ignoring elite talent. No club is actively trying to build a list of average talent.

The question is, can they construct enough elite talent to win a flag while ignoring the place where you get it at it’s cheapest: the top end of the draft.

Richmond have done well in both areas. Houli, Lynch, Caddy, Nankervis and Prestia are big success stories.

But there’s that drafted core: Martin, Cotchin, Edwards, Riewoldt, Rance, Grimes, Rioli.

Could they have assembled them anywhere but the draft? How much currency would they have needed to bring them in via trade? Could they ever have had enough?

It's an interesting one. You built a dynasty predominately from the draft with a couple of successful trades. Then topped up with trade/free agents to fill holes.

You're using an entirely different blueprint to replace your departed and departing guns - it's an attempted rebuild almost entirely through trade. It's an ambitious strategy, but I personally think that you are showing a ridiculous amount of faith in your medical guys and are going with one risky punt after another. I think it's going to put you in the middle of the ladder for 5 years before you fall further.

Hawks have a lot of friends in the industry. From doing some dodgy deal with Carlton to get JOM trade over the line...getting Scully from GWS for 5th round pick and making GWS demand Essendon to pay for Scully and Shiel...getting talented young players from the development clubs for bargain price...not to mention getting AFL to change the rules as they go. They can do anything at Hawthorn.
