I'm certain this bloke has had countless threads done on him before but none since I've been here - having just watched the rehashing of his Open Mike interview it reminded me how much I actually like the bloke.

Capper got a mention in another Open Mike that made me think there was a bit more to the bloke than his public persona would indicate.

Mike Sheahan interviewed Jordan Bannister (the ex player/umpire) and the topic of Bannister's brother was raised.
Bannister's brother was in an accident that left him a quadriplegic.

At Jordan's request and AFAIK without any fanfare or publicity Capper spent the day with Bannister's brother, simply because the brother was a fan of his.
Obviously had an effect when you consider that Jordan thought the 2 things that brought the greatest joy to his brother, after he became a quadriplegic, were the birth of his son and Capper's visit.

Capper is a guy who has made a living out of self-promotion, but in this case seemingly not a word.

As for the rest, good exciting player who could be a bit of a wally, but you sense it was always fairly harmless and designed to keep him in the spotlight.

People I know who've met him reckon he is exactly like he acts in the media. A totally bizarre bloke but good for a laugh in my opinion

My father worked with his for a while prior to him making it into the seniors at the Swans. His job was to sit on the back of the truck putting out the witches hats for the road crews.

My father said he as dumb as dogshit but an absolutely lovely bloke who you couldn't help but like.

Gerard Healy often comments on 'The Wiz' and that during that '86-'87 period he was a very very good player and pretty much unstoppable at the SCG. His antics do take away from just how good a footballer he really was.

He could play alright and made the most of his limited ability. The SCG suited him with the exceptional Swans midfield feeding him and he never ventured far out from goal. (He couldn't kick over a jam tin) and he was virtually hopeless down here in Melbourne games. He was perfect for Sydney and it was an insane decision to move to the Bears at the peak of his career at age 25.
His persona is all an act and he's made good money from it, he was good value marketing wise for the Swans, but made a foolish decision going to Brisbane.

Would like to stand on his head, the mans an idiot.
Football wise he has the score on the board, but he's still a bloody idiot

This.

Mental midget that had a decent leap and managed to kick some goals thanks to one of the more elite midfield a full forward could hope for. As we know SCG is shorter than other grounds so if you got guys like Gerard Healy, Greg Williams, Barry Mitchell or Mark Browning off half back drilling the ball on your chest even a "insert Heath Shaw comment from weekend" could get a lot of goals. Just how stupid he was stood out more to me than some decent marking ability. Think he was just at the right time , in the right place.
Having said all that , he seemed like a harmless idiot so not sure why some hated him. I just would have hated being stuck in a room with him talking.

Eric Bana not a bad impersonation of what we are dealing with here.

Met him multiple times. Never come across a nicer AFL bloke I don't think. He plays up the whole Capper thing like he does in the media, but he's got plenty of time for anyone who wants to say g'day to him.

You can't have anything against someone like that.

Exactly my opinion from the couple of times I met him.

I remember watching rounds 16, 17 and 18 where the Swans scored 201, 236 and 198 points respectively. It was actually a disappointment they didn't score 200+ three weeks in a row but how often does a team score 600+ points in three weeks?

Capper knocked up 16 goals, in these 3 games, in a very even contribution by the swans

The 198 game was against Richmond, when we were sh!t (OK, that doesn't narrow it down much, I know). Anyway, all the talk pre-game was whether the Swans could notch up 200+ 3 weeks in a row - when they didn't it almost felt like Richmond had achieved something (which, for us, in a very small and pathetic way, we had).

Also kicked the winning goal in 1989 that was the nail in the coffin for Robert Wall's coaching career at Carlton.

HOF worthy on that alone.

For the 1982-1986 period the Sydney Swans by a country mile got the most TV coverage of any VFL team. So not only did Capper become a star but even the likes of Rod Carter became well-known because you saw them play full matches every couple of weeks.
Tilt was a bonafide star is his own right.

As odd as he is, and as big as his ego is, there is a kind of innocent if somewhat misguided honesty about him.

It's sad in hindsight that he didn't play out the second half of his career more effectively because f*** me he could play.

Interested to see where other people stand on him.
hated him when he played but like him now... funny guy even if people are usually laughing at him.
