Anyone know who has been captain-coach an who the last one was? it would be interesting to know what sorta success some of them had. obviously it will never happen again, its become a bit of a lost art. imagine how huge a guy like judd would be if he was coach as well.

It's gone, because in a modern professional sporting league it is impossible. There is far too much for a coach to do, during the week and on match day, to combine it with the responsibilities of a captain. Hell, there's so much to do that even today's assistant coaches have unprecedented levels of work and control over the team.

If Judd was captain and coach of Carlton right now, they would probably be in the shitter with 1 win, and Judd would be playing in the worst form of his career.

To answer, no person has ever Captain-Coached in the AFL. You would have to go through the SANFL, VFL and WAFL history books to find the last, probably some time in the 80's.

Jezza and Blight were probably the last in VFL/AFL, about 81 from memory.

Jock McHale did it. Malcolm Blight did it at Woodville after leaving North as well.

Although he doesn't hold a candle to some of the previous captain/coaches mentioned, but David Teague captain/coached Northern Bullants after he was dropped from Carlton a year or two back didn't he?

Andy Bennett I think was a player-coach at West Torrens after Blight, or around the same time.

But the closest has to be Clay Sampson who was playing for South Adelaide in 2008, was appointed assistant coach at the start of the 2008 season and then took over from Jack Cahill when he was sacked mid season, but I think technically retired before the first game he coached as senior coach before being appointed full-time senior coach for 2009 and continuing on the great Panther tradition of sucking

Jack Dyer
Percy Bentley
Ron Barassi
Alex Jesaulenko
Malcolm Blight
Ted Whitten
Dick Reynolds
Bill Hutchison
John Nicholls
Reg Hickey
Jock McHale are just a few, I'm sure people can add plenty more.

What history am I rewriting, exactly?

Look at the history of the AFL, and not once since 1990 has there been a Captain-Coach in the league.

Anything before then is state league, the VFL, and it appears the last time anyone in any state league performed the role was in the 1970's or 80's, before the professional era.

You're rewriting the historical fact that the other "State Leagues" pre AFL were feeders for the big show - the VFL.

I dont much care if you like it or not.

I don't particularly care what you like to believe regarding the relative strengths of the leagues before the VFL started bankrupting itself... I mean, drawing all of the best talent from around the country in the mid to late seventies onwards, but the truth is the VFL was a state league, and existed in the time before the sport became truly professional.

As it stands, no player has ever been Captain-Coach in the AFL - the professional era. The records start in 1990, and are quite easy to check.

Heaps of people have Captain, Coached in the AFL and you would only have to google AFL to find the answer. SANFL & WAFL history is not included in the AFL. And the correct answer to everyone's question is Alex Jesaulenko at StKilda in 1981. He retired as a player in round 8 that year and continued as non playing coach till the end of the 1982 season. Malcolm Blight was the last person as a playing Coach for Nth Melbourne in 1981 but was not Captain that year. He was sacked as Coach in round 16 that year but continued playing! Thankyou, your welcome!
