Ben still looking the goods despite being relegated down back this week. Has great composure and seems to make good decisions consistently, bit of a seagul when his teammates have a mark or free kick despite rarely getting used but he's great at linking chains of play and strong in the contest.

Overall this draft crop hasn't impressed a lot tbh... I don't think the 'stars' like Ashcroft, O'Sullivan etc have many traits that stand out from the pack. Smillie clear number 1 for me as it stands.

Rookie Me's summary of the twin's game against Footscray. Should be noted that most of this guy's notes on each prospect were pretty positive so I don't know how much we should read into this.

#3 Ben Camporeale (Glenelg)
Midfielder/Defender | 186cm | 21/07/2006

Having ended game one in defence, Camporeale spent most of game two there before being shifted into midfield for the final quarter. The Carlton father-son prospect was his productive self in the way of rebound running, chaining his possessions and waxing well with teammates. He also showed his strengths with a nice intercept mark at full stretch in term three, but could perhaps have been a little more damaging with his kicking and tighter on opponents in defensive 50.

#4 Lucas Camporeale (Glenelg)
Wing | 185cm | 21/07/2006

Camporeale was one of the few players whose role hardly wavered across the two Academy games, as he again made the wing his own on Saturday. He wasn’t quite as prolific as he was against Coburg, but ran hard on the outside and looked to provide a bit of drive with every possession. Camporeale has shown an aptitude for playing through the middle at SANFL Under 18s level, but the way he covers ground and takes metres by foot is arguably best suited to the wing or flanks.

I will be quite surprised if we are forced to use our first rounder on Ben, who is notionally the better prospect on the open market. Lucas clearly projects as an outside type at this stage. This is the role he has played in the televised games. Unless Lucas is being specifically instructed to maintain width, he is looking less inclined to inject himself in to “the contest”. This is polar opposite to his brother who regularly pushes up form half back to the stoppages. He seems to be itching to get in to the fray.

Even a mischievous SOS or Dodo are unlikely to go early with a bid. If we win the flag, he may cost our first rounder via a bid, but I expect his name to be called in the twenties, not the teens. Unless Lucas dominates a wing at the upcoming interstate “carnival”, he may even slide to the rookie draft, which would be a huge win.

The boys will have the chance to stand out, going back to play for SA. Ben will be in the engine room and Lucas will get to be a playmaking winger. Recent draft history shows very few South Australians taken early in the draft. Midfielder Sid Draper will be at the pointy end of the draft as likely will Tyler Welsh a father/son tall forward. Ben can elevate with prominent showings against the highly touted Victorian mids, but looks more like a solid role player than an absolute gun. Outside wing types are struggling to impact in AFL at present, they need express pace or elite disposal. Lucas has good, but inconsistent disposal, which could elevate to elite. He has good game awareness and peripheral vision which makes him a decent prospect, but I would not expect an immediate impact at the higher level.

Plenty can change, but I see Ben costing our second rounder and Lucas a late pick or some chance to slip to an automatic pick up in the rookie draft on exposed form. This would be an excellent outcome, giving us a shot at a high end KPP or role player. I am confident the Camporeales will be AFL quality players, but I am not expecting them to be absolute top liners.

A handful of the higher rated boys have not been seen in the Academy games to date. I expect the boys to slip from most early phantoms.

Very good appraisal. I do wonder that, if their surname wasn't Camporeale would they have been selected in the Aus Academy. Whatever the case, hopefully we get them cheaper than they are "worth" and that they become great Carlton footballers in the future.

Rookieme's notes on the twins game v NSW:

#2 Lucas Camporeale (Glenelg)
Wing | 186cm | 21/07/2006

Locking down his spot on the wing, Camporeale went about his usual business accumulating possessions and providing touches of outside class. While it has been an area for improvement of late, his inside 50 kicking was a lot more assured with lower and more direct passes to leading targets. If he can nail down that left foot as a weapon, Camporeale may then work on using both sides of his body as while he has a point of difference, is somewhat dependant on the left.

#3 Ben Camporeale (Glenelg)
Midfielder | 185cm | 21/07/2006

Best afield for the victors, Camporeale was a mainstay through midfield and showcased his versatility on-ball. The vice-captain started out by accumulating possessions as usual with strong ground coverage, but came into his own after half time as the go-to inside ball winner. His clean hands and core strength became a factor at stoppages where he fed runners and stepped up when the game was there to be won. A soaring mark in the final quarter was among his best moments.

Good that Lucas seemed to have a nice game by foot.

I get the feeling Ben in particular will lift his reputation during the national champs.

There's definately a bias towards the Vic prospects when you look at how much they are pumped up by the media vs interstate players who perform similarily.

Ben has been dominating sanfl under 18s for 2 years, was BOG on grand final day and close to best on for the academy. Doesn't get nearly as much kudos as the young vic mids.

Will be interesting.

Hope you are wrong for the sake of our draft hand.

But, the deployment of Ben in the recent Academy games was certainly made to highlight the Victorian crew. Hoping we (Carlton) have suggested the boys are OK to have more peripheral roles.

The reality is, Ben would be itching to go head to head with the VIC boys and will, along with Draper, be the inside staple for the SA side. Similarly Lucas will be used in a more offensive role after largely playing defensive wing for the Academy team. I doubt we could or even would tell the boys to try to lower their profiles.

On exposed form and extrapolating the multiple high profile mids and the demand for key position players, defensive runners and “electric” small forward options which will elevate a number of “second rounders”, I would be confident we could get a pick in before a bid. The lower the Saints finish the better, to alleviate a SOS bid which could come with a mid range first. Most clubs tend to allow father/son types to drift a little in the order, SOS and Dodo could make that hard for us.

With nothing yet on mooted changes to the system, limiting the ability to trade down and use later picks to match bids, it is to be hoped there will not be a change until next year at the earliest.

(Despite talk of Free Agents and perhaps trades, it remains a real chance we just take the Campo boys and elevate Boyd)

I guess there are positives either way.

If they destroy the championships it would suggest we are getting absolute bargains (assuming the bidding system doesn't change) even if we have to pay a little more.

If they perform so so we probably get them cheaper but we might not be getting players as good as we thought.

Either way I expect the club to move picks around to make the most of the situation.

Agreed. We'll get them both either way, sure it's enticing to get a bargain, but getting essentially a free swing at a top 10 and 20 player is an awesome haul.

We've seen the wing types drop a bit but develope, see Josh Daicos.

I'd love to see both boys fly up the draft boards instead of keep a low profile. It means they're dominating.

I hope Ben and/or Lucas becomes a top-10 prospect. Yes, we have to pay more in draft points. But we get a 'free' top-10 player, which is way more exciting than a player ranked in the 20s or 30s.

I hope they last to picks 98 and 99

I don't care were a player is ranked, especially if we have first access

Sure, great to celebrate both boys going in the 1st round, even better that they have that talent and deliver, and they are seen as steals

Honestly, right now I see Ben as a late ish 1st, Lucas a late 2nd

Goes without saying that we'd prefer to pay nothing rather than something for them. However, them dominating the champs, and that being reflected in their draft stock, would be worth the extra points it burns for us.

I'm more interested to see what changes the AFL inevitably make to the points system. You just know it will be left to the last minute

Ben did very well in the first Academy game when they played him as a midfielder - they moved him around after that and he dropped off a bit. If, as you'd expect, he plays pure mid the whole way through for SA he'll ultimately be a pick somewhere in the teens. But a long way to go right now.

I don’t really get how ben hasn’t been listed as a top 10 pick really. He seems the part to me

Must be said he’s not really the type of player we need but you never say no to a free good player

I'll give you a few reasons from my neutral perspective, but also if the two of them slide that's all to the Blues benefit ultimately.

  • they play in the SANFL u18's which is a little off broadway and stuck behind a paywall. Who cares what the draft watchers think at the end of the day... the teams will determine where the two of them fall.
  • there are a TON of mids in this years draft, so inevitably some will slide
  • Ben lacks some wow factor or x-factor that other mids have. He's a poor kick, and not a power athlete.
  • we havent had the champs yet. If he dominates for a SA team that I'm expecting to be really strong, and out performs some of the more fancied Metro mids then he'll climb.

There seem to be a lot of dynamic sub 183 mids in the top 20 from Vic getting pumped up. Both Campos are a bit stringy at the moment but look like they a a couple of CMs growth left in them and have frames that will fill out.
