Carlton-Fitzroy Lions Press Release

The Carlton Lions have announced that they will be playing one pre-season match in the regional centre of Seymour in north-east Victoria.

Due to the 15 away matches that the Carlton Lions will be playing this season, the Carlton Lions have determined that at the very least they will have the choice of at least one venue this season for at least one match.

Obviously the AFL are under the impression that the Carlton Lions have relocated from their home Princes Park (formerly Optus Oval). We at the Carlton Lions can assure them that this is not so.

President Dyson Hore-Lacy expressed the wish that next season, that the Carlton Lions can have at least one match at Princes Park.

"Ah well, it's back to the good old 80's and 90's", said Hore-Lacy, "Once again the persecution of the Fitzroy Football Club (even as the Carlton Lions) continues."

Carlton-Fitzroy Lions Press Release

The Carlton Lions have called on the AFL to reschedule their full seven home games at Princes Park (no longer called Optus Oval).

The club in the excitement of the recent merger between the Carlton Football Club and the Fitzroy Football Club is expected to play to full houses at the Park this season. The Legends Stand still needs to be paid off by the new entity and club president Dyson Hore-Lacy believes that this willbe accomplished in the next 12 months, if the club reaches anticipated membership and crowd numbers.

President Dyson Hore-Lacy was extremely pleased at last month's membership numbers of 14,000, which included approximately 5,000 former Fitzroy Football Club and Brisbane Lions members.

In other related news the Brisbane Bears are expected to close their Victorian operations. Victorian membership of the Bears is believed to be struggling to reach 1,000, with approximately 700 Victorian members signed up at the end of last month. It is clear that the Victorian membership of the Brisbane club has been effected significantly by the merger of Carlton and Fitzroy, with many moving across to the new club. Veteran Martin Pike is believed to be a warm crowd favorite at Lions training.

Carlton-Fitzroy Lions Press Release

The Carlton Lions wish to inform the AFL that due to the uncertainty surrounding the makeup of the Carlton list for Season 2004, that they will be unable to finalise their delistings, veterans or rookies until the AFL has confirmed the make-up of their final list.

The Carlton Lions have conducted all recruiting and trading in good faith that the lists provided by the AFL are correct and we trust that the AFL records tally with the records of the Carlton Lions.

In other news Carlton Lions' membership has reached 15,000, with approximately 5,400 former Fitzroy and Brisbane Lions supporters transferring their allegiances to the new club.

Carlton-Fitzroy Lions Press Release

Despite the uncertainty of the make-up of the final list of the Carlton Lions, the club is pleased to announce that Martin Pike and Paul Williams have been officially listed as veterans today.

Whilst the club is not sure what the AFL rules regarding veterans are, the clubs has assumed at least half of the salaries of Pike and Williams will be removed. In this case, Carlton's salary cap will be reduced by $270,000, taking it below the salary cap limit of $6.5 million to $6.33 million.

If all the veteran's salary is outside the cap, then Carlton's new salary cap limit on the current official list stands at $5.96 million.

This should address a recent AFL directive to Carlton to reduce it's salary cap by $100,000 or face the delisting of Shane Woewodin. Woewodin is now confirmed for 2004.

Richo hamstrung by hamstring again
5:10:51 PM Wed 14 April, 2004
Paul Gough
Sportal/exclusive to carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

Matthew Richardson’s troublesome hamstring has flared again, casting doubt over his immediate playing future.

Richardson limped off in the opening minutes during the Lions’ loss to North Melbourne at Princes Park on Easter Saturday and did not return.

The Lions later confirmed Richardson had suffered a torn right hamstring and would miss at least two matches.

That means Richardson will be ruled out of at least the crunch games against a rampaging Essendon and West Coast who fought out a magnificant match last week. These two matches could well shape the Lions’ season given the club has already lost two matches punctuated by its first-up win over Geelong.

However given Richardson’s history with hamstring injuries, there is a concern he could be out for even longer.

In 2002 he missed three games early in the season with a hamstring injury, only to return in round six of that season and re-injure it again - which then cost him another five matches on the sidelines.

And last year he also missed two matches with a hamstring injury, although he did make a successful comeback on that occasion by kicking four goals in round eight.

Carlton-Fitzroy coach Mick Nunan said his side would have to cope with playing without Richardson far better than they did against the Kangaroos on Easter Saturday.

“We lost a bit of confidence when he went off,” he said.

“We’ve trained all summer with Matthew at the top of the goal-square (and without him) we lost confidence going into attack.”

“But we’ve got to be better than that.”

Nunan said veteran Sav Rocca was the player most likely to replace Richardson while the Lions suggesting that Tom Roach and Callan Beasy were in contention for the last vacant spot. .

Sportal/exclusive to carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

Logan and Lynch join the Lions
8:10:51 PM Thu 15 September, 2005
Paul Gough
Sportal/exclusive to carltonfitzroyfc.com.au

The Carlton Lions are pleased to have closed their first trade of the 2006 pre-season when it picked up 21 year old 183 cm midfielder Tom Logan and 22 year old 194 cm Key Position Player Quentin Lynch from the Western Vultures, giving up Kade Simpson in return.

Logan, who was drafted from the Northern Territory, experienced bad luck early in his career when he broke his jaw in an intra club match

He was rather more fortunate in 2005, impressing enough in the pre-season to make his debut and play three senior games.

The Logans, it must be said, are something of a sporting crew. Tom’s father Peter was a footballer, while netball was the sport of choice for mother Judith and sister Stephanie (the latter of whom achieved all-Australian selection).

Logan is a left-footer but it is in the thick of the midfield action where he is likely to make his name.

With a knack for gathering the hard possessions around the clinches, Tom has seen plenty of the ball in his outings with the Vultures reserves, also catching the eye with a willingness to run.

A second-place finish behind Shaun Hart in a 2004 pre-season time trial gives an indication of Tom’s endurance – an ability fostered in his younger years.

Tom who was also once a promising junior basketballer was formerly a cross country runner and a South Australian State champion in the sport in grade four.

The Lions hope he will be able to slot into a midfield or half back role.

Lynch is a different kettle of fish from Logan. The tall Key Position player enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in fortunes in 2004, playing 22 games after failing to make a senior appearance in 2003. The only blot on his copybook was the game he missed due to a club suspension. Looked assured at centre half-back in 2004 and at Full forward in 2005 and should add versatility to the Lions lineup for 2006, in whatever position he plays. With 56 senior games under his belt to date, Lynch should be reaching his prime in the next two-three years.

Stafford and French retire

Stafford and French retire

Carlton-Fitzroy Lions ruckmen Greg Stafford and Barnaby French have announced their retirement from the game .

While coach Mick Nunan conceded 32-year-old Stafford's announcement came as no surprise, he was initially shocked when 32-year-old French surprisingly announced his retirement before the last game of the season.

Stafford – who will retire on 204 games - said he was at peace with his decision and that he would value the last two seasons he was able to play with the Lions.

Like French, Stafford said he was looking forward to being able to travel and do whatever he pleased every weekend.

The Lions are now looking for ruckmen to replace Stafford and French and have Draft Picks #3, #18 #21, #37, #53, #69, #85, #101 for trade.

Somewhat surprisingly, the club has indicated that it will entertain offers for all draft picks, even the valuable #3 pick. "We'll throw them out there and see what comes up" said a club spokesman.
