Maybe I'm just cynical, but I find it really hard to believe he had a genuine gambling problem. I feel like he's laying it on thick as part of his role for these bodies and for this paid advertisement article.

Can recall talk about gambling being rife at the club back in the Judd/Murphy/Gibbs days - punters club within the playing group, innuendo on here about Menzel and Gibbs' real reasons for going home, etc. Not surprising or outlandish that a young guy entering that environment right after losing his dad would develop a problem.

I believe I can post this link to the full story on Sam Docherty because it contains the full content in an original publication. But if I am incorrect, I apologise to the moderators.

whats gambling go to do with bereavement ?

Why would a non gambler suddenly decide that gambling was a comfort to themselves when they are grieving ? Makes no sense to me ....and reads like a croc of tbh

Is is that hard to comprehend young people experiencing loss reaching for crutches and distraction?

Not sure if I'm interpreting this correctly, but I noticed this line....

A bit of mine was linked to my dad passing away and the linkage I had with him

Maybe Sam's dad liked to have a punt, so Sam kind of embraced that after his dad died?

My dad was a compulsive gambler.
I've always been conscious to check myself in case I had that tendency. I don't go to casino's or bet on pokies.
I know I can fixate on things and I suspect my dad was similar.
Anyway, I bet on Melbourne Cup Day and treat it like a little memorial for dad.
I get it.
Addiction comes in many forms.

This is also why I have a soft spot for Lij...and I think I know why Carlton have been so firm about it. I get that.
But I'm big on redemption arcs.
I hope ..if he's really seen the light that we keep him.

Yep

Lij's issues are more than just Lij

More generally, people can turn to alcohol, drugs, endorphin-chasing and other risky activities after losing someone close.

Don't see why gambling wouldn't fit this.
it's also fairly common that in managing an addiction to one of those things the interest is spread to a different but similar one.

Well - thanks to all the posters who pointed out that gambling might be a form of distraction from the grief ( like alcohol etc) - I guess I can understand that - especially in the context if it was around them amongst people they work with every day ..

still - grief to me is a private matter i don't 'get' people monetising it - or proselytising over it - it smacks of something NQR - because and it is only a matter of time- grief is part of the human condition - loss is inevitable, sadly.

best wishes to all regarding this stuff.

What's the lecture that Clarkson used to give new recruits at the Hawks? The 4 P's that undo most young men at football clubs; the piss, the powder, the p*ssy and the punt - with the punt being the most dangerous.

As soon as these blokes set up online accounts with the major betting agencies, they are heavily (and specifically) targeted with all sorts of incentives (bonus bets, track-side tickets, personal calls with 'bonus' odds, etc.). It's predatory.

Not at all surprised a young person going through a tough time fell into the trap - it's designed for him.

Happens a lot. Distraction, channeling pain etc. I have seen it a lot
Totally agree Soapy. Many addictions and/or compulsions are due to anxiety and/or depression. It can also be a dopamine hit to take away perceived pain or it can be a way of trying to control the uncontrollable.

Many of us here may be addicts to these Carlton Bigfooty Forums! Gotta get my dopamine hit!!!!! Crying out for another juicy rumour. 😂

My problem "P" is neither of the four Clarkson would mention, its procrastination

Bigfooty defintely does not help deal with that P :p

Weitering is a yes guy for Voss so would be favoured. Sam already on account for calling out stuff as it feels. Imagine if this next season goes off the rails; Sam might call it out while Weitering will just say, we move forward...very similar to when a mug punters says "we go again".

Maybe it was something they liked doing together few beers and a bit of a punt…

THere are a lot variables at play, some of which can be a simple matter of timing

When challenges present themselves all at once, as opposed to at different times, and all by chance, that can make all the difference
