On the back of TheSmokingGun enquiry about Kyle Hammersly, I wanted to relay an article and post about him and a couple others based on the WA talent match from Feb 17. Players such as Luke English, who I have prematurely touted as a possible smokey to hit the top 10 this year as well as a few others that impressed.

These write ups have been taken from 'footy prophets' write up on the game.

LUKE ENGLISH | PERTH | MIDFIELD | 181cm | 79kg
The reigning Jack Clarke Medallist and WAFL Colts Coaches Award winner found a heap of footy for Team Black. Again and again, he was the one in the stoppage winning the clearance before finding his intended target with his crisp disposal. After such a dominant season in 2017, it will be fascinating to see what 2018 has in store for English.

KYLE HAMMERSLEY | SOUTH FREMANTLE | MIDFIELD | 185cm | 81kg
Arguably the best player on the ground, Hammersley used his pace and endurance to cover the ground exceptionally well. Whenever he had the ball in hand, he always found a target, especially when going inside attacking 50. The Wagin product looks to be one of the best prospects from Western Australia this year.

JARROD CAMERON | SWAN DISTRICTS | HALF-FORWARD | 181cm | 70kg
The younger brother of Brisbane’s Charlie, Cameron is an exciting half-forward flanker who can push through the midfield. Blessed with some exciting attacking traits, he was frequently the one setting up the play with his run and carry and his elite kicking skills for Team Black. He also showed excellent defensive efforts with some exceptional tackles. Another big year looms for the talented youngster.

WIL HICKMOTT | SUBIACO | HALF-BACK | 181cm | 74kg
The son of former Carlton and Geelong player Adrian, Hickmott was sensational on the half-back line for Team Gold. He regularly intercepted Team Black’s attacking forays, before using his elite skills to rebound the ball and set up Team Gold’s attacking entries. There is no doubt that Carlton will be keen to monitor his progress closely with him being eligible for father | son selection.

Sample size isn't large enough yet , and of course this year will mostly determine the order of the Top 10, but my early obs is Lukocius is a clear standout from the great quality pack chasing.

At No2 i have Ben King over his bro Max at this stage. As i said, i haven't seen enough yet to have a firm opinion, but Ben looks immense in the air and his movement across the ground to the ball.

At our likeliest range of 5-9, there will be heaps of players to take interest in and watch during 2018.

Agreed, I think I have already gone on record many times regarding Lukosius, enough said

The King boys are interesting, both very good players and should feature in the first round, but seem slightly overrated, at this stage

Wouldn't be the first time outrageous talent has gone #3....

:)

And if he's REAL good, he could even slip to 4:

Sam Walsh anyone ?

This thread is a waste of time.

Knightmare has already given us a C- for all of our 2018 selections.

Don't be like that FFS.

BTW, are Witts, Kennedy, Broomhead, Freeman and Sharenberg still in his best top players, 23 and under? :)

The problem with this is that while a split is necessary, there's no way around the 2nd day being a ratings nightmare.

Just have the first two rounds for day one instead of what would be a 60 minute event for TV.

Seems stupid to have it over two days. Don't see why that'd be necessary at all. Just start it earlier in the afternoon if you need to.
They won't stop the clock for ads, they'll just run the longer segments during the trade clock. Still a 60-80 minute screening no matter how they break it up.

They'll want prime time for the first round, and prime time for the post-draft wrap. But the analysis is going to have make a huge jump, including lead-up coverage. Last year's was still rubbish.

I'd be happy with 3 hours on the first night (pre-draft, 1st & 2nd round, interviews and analysis), then 3 hours on the second day.
The problem with this is when are the AFL going to learn Australia is not the US****ingA. The college systems for Basketball & NFL are massive, fully-televised competitions in their own right. By the time kids are ready to be drafted they're already household names. That's just simply not the case here. Having a population of 350 million affords a talent base making it a worthwhile venture for a National Broadcaster to cover in depth.

Find it hard see a TV Network committing to broadcast much of the U18 season when the main U18 comp's (TAC Cup) talent base is continually being diluted of its best players by the APS system. The AFL needs to get its house in order first if its to really create enough interest to make it work.

Using the NFL draft as an example:

Night 1 - Round 1 (32 picks, media opportunities, pre-draft and post-round analysis)
Night 2 - Rounds 2 & 3 (64 picks, etc)
Day 3 - Rounds 4-7 (128 picks)

And it's covered on 3 different channels, with a huge amount of analysis and lead-in, as you've described.

What I'm suggesting:
Night 1 - Rounds 1 & 2 (~40 picks, media opportunities, pre-draft and post-round analysis)
Afternoon 2 - Rest of draft, leading into full analysis at prime time (~40 picks, etc)

The way to fill in the gaps is to have prepared significant highlight packages, then come at the ready with game footage from clubs to show how certain types of players can slot into their system to provide something new/exciting/better.

There's no need to go nutso about coverage of the U18 system, and developing the prospects as household names. Just have some tactical analysis of the draftees, some tape, then some tactical analysis of the club, and some tape. That's ultimately days of footage if you did it for every player, but they don't have to do that.

The biggest thing missing is analysts that actually do that for a network to an adequate standard, because I sure as shit haven't seen them.
