There are some really terrific prospects coming out from different parts of Australia this year and while the top contingency seems to be from SA and VIC, I really like a fair few of the guys from WA.

The upper echelon of VIC prospects to me includes the likes of the King brothers, Sam Walsh, Jack Bytel and Jye Caldwell. While from SA, Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine, Connor Rozee & Jackson Hately all look the goods.

Needless to say that from WA Ian Hill is shaping to be a top 10 pick but who else from there matches last year has me watching, even for our later picks?

Dylan O'Reilly, the son of former Fremantle, Geelong and Carlton player Stephen O'Reilly is one... A key forward slash ruck who dominated last year kicking 46 goals from 17 games including a bag of 7 and two games of 5. Unfortunately for Freo, his father fell to games short of the 100 so he will be one to watch in 2018.

Sydney Stack is a live wire small forward slash defender who doesn't accumulate large numbers but is damaging by foot. I don't believe him to be a first round prospect (more like an early 3rd) at this stage but he is definitely one I shall be watching. Here are some highlights:

Finally, the least hyped player, who I actually think might push up into the first round and possible top 10 calculations is Luke English. The ball magnet midfielder won the RediMed Jack Clarke Medal with a total of 53 votes, an astounding 22 votes higher than the player that came in second. Needs to work on his consistency but had terrific disposal and tackle numbers in more games than not.

Agree with you and well put this years draft top 10 or 12 are going to be very good footballer.
A few exceptionally so, Silvagni and Brodie will be spiolt for choice, it would be a great time to have 2 picks in the top 20.

Midfield depth is the key for us now, but if Luko is there I would take him without hesitation. Talls like him don't come around every day.

They came around twice for us on draft day 2015....

What are peoples thoughts on Sam Walsh?
Very much a "watch this space" prospect who could end up going anywhere from Pick 1 to Pick 10 depending upon what he does this year. Started to find an enormous amount of the ball at TAC Cup level in the second half of the season despite being just skin and bone. Played more of an outside role for Vic Country in last years Nationals due to prospects such as Worpel, Parish, Dow & LDU owning the inside, but played more of a balanced role when he went back to the Geelong Falcons.

More of a smooth-moving SPS type than an outright speed machine like Rankine. Has a fair bit of versatility in that you can use him on the inside, outside, balanced or on a forward or back flank, but one of things that really stands out is the defensive side of his game. Tackling, chasing & harassment is very good when he doesn't have the ball. Walsh's disposal by hand or foot is quite solid and anyone who can accumulate 25-39 possessions a game must have a decent level of endurance.

Given our likely draft position (Pick 4-7) the ones I'm most interested in are Hill, Rozee and Caldwell.

I'd love to see our first pick used on a good distributor with clean hands, someone that Cripps, Kennedy, SPS, Dow and Fisher can feed the ball out to in the heat of the contest, and who can then be relied on to deliver quality ball to our forwards. Hill is clean with pace to burn, Rozee definitely seems to have those attributes, and from what I've read Caldwell does too. That being said, I can't seem to find any actual footage of Caldwell?

Rankine and Lukosius unlikely to be available.
King boys surplus to requirements.
Is Walsh a bit too same-same in the context of our existing player group?

Bonus points for Caldwell as he apparently played a fair bit of footy with Dow and O'Brien at Geelong Grammar.

Also thrilled to find almost no mention of BSOS anywhere... ;)

I'd still nab one of the King brothers if he was best available at our pick. Sometimes you need the best possible prospects, not just adequate ones, which is why I find the constant back-and-forth talk regarding our key-backmen frustrating. It's not how many we have that's important, it's who we have.

I agree to an extent, but leaving too many young talented talls in the VFL doesn't help much. It'd be different if our existing talls were getting to the back end of their careers, at that point stock up and hope you can keep them on the list until needed. We're already stretching things with Weiters/Marchy/Plow/Jones as a backline unit, and that's with Macreadie coming up behind them. Forwards...yeah, maybe, but I also don't think the better forward King is going to be available for us - NM or Collingwood very likely to nab him, and GC could too if they lose Lynch.

I don't think we'd reach 5 or 6 players deeper to avoid a tall, of course. But if the recruiters rate King as #5 and Hill as #6, I think it'd be in the best interests of the club to grab the silky outside runner with class disposal.

I like him, very composed, has a touch of Ryan Griffen about him

Thanks for the terrific run-down Hal. It’s really helpful. For those us with long memories, I think it’s fair to say that Stephen O’Reilly owes us. So if his son is any good, I hope he makes his way down to Princes Park.

Does anyone know anything about our three academy players listed for the Knights this year? Sunny Brazier is an interesting one, looks like a young Bont; doubt he plays like him.

I think there'll be a lot stronger options available at those selections than Hill, Rozee & Caldwell. I think Hill will go early in the 2nd Round in this draft. I'd probably wait until after Nationals before making a more definitive call on Rozee & Caldwell, but at this stage I'd say back half of the 1st Round.

You need to remember that there have been very few quality KPFs up for grabs since the 2015 ND and before that we had a number of compromised drafts, so don't be surprised if Lukosius, M.King & B.King go Picks 1, 2 & 3. There's a very real chance that all of Rankine, Walsh, Bytel, Smith & Thomas will be available at Picks 4-7.

Brilliant write up TSG. Thanks for that.

HalAlaric I was over in Perth mid-Feb and watched Kyle Hammersly play in an U18 WA scratch match. Really nice sized balanced midfielder at 185cm with excellent pace and strong endurance. Quite clean by hand or foot and had little trouble hitting up a team mate who presented up to him on the lead inside 50. His vision and decision-making were quite good. The main weakness I saw was that he could've worked a little harder defensively, but the basics are all there.

The game was missing half a dozen of the better rated prospects, such as Hill, Carter, Cox, Joyce and a few others so it was a little hard to see exactly where he sits in the pecking order. My initial thoughts were late pick with the potential to climb into the 3rd Round spending upon his output this year. If anyone can fast-track his development it's Sumich. Given you see much of the WA boys than we do, your thoughts???

Hey TSG,

I believe you to be spot on with your evaluation for Hammersly. Still very early days yet but he does look like a terrific prospect without those others you mentioned and looks even better when they're there playing alongside him. I particularly like his ability to find the ball and how he uses his strong endurance base in outworking his opponent.

When I have seen him he has been played majority on the half forward flank but through reports from others, and the small sample of him I have seen, he is definitely capable of a midfield transition.

It's a little difficult in deciphering where he might go this early but I agree an early 3rd is a good prediction. I only hope he concentrates equally on his goal kicking as that was an extremely damaging trait of his in 2017.

Finally, I'm actually from and live in the Big V and although I do travel across to WA a bit, most of my insight comes through people close to me who work in a variety of fields including sports performance and junior coaching. They generally keep me pretty updated with those WAFL and Colts guys so if I hear anything new I will most certainly post.

Cheers & GO BLUES!!!
