Ok, i was bored watching the Aussies collapse faster than Alex Rance in a contest, so had a crack at my early Top 25 Phantom. May as well keep current order until it's not:

1. Carlton: Sam Walsh
2. GC: Jack Lukosius
3. GC: Connor Rozee
4. StK: Max King
5. Port: Izak Rankine (and we visualise Crowie fans throwing their West End's at their Pye TV's)
6. Syd: Nick Blakey
7. GC: Bailey Smith
8. WB: Ben King
9. NM: Tarryn Thomas (Hamish Ogilvie from Crows loves his fellow Tassie)
10. Adel : Riley Collier-Dawkins
11. GWS: Jordan Clark (bit early for mine but looks a good fit in a few ways.
12. PA: Jackson Hately
13. GWS: Chayce Jones
14. Geel: Jye Caldwell
15. Adel: Bailey Williams
16. Freo: Ian Hill
17. Port: Jez McLennan
18. Adel: Luke Valente
19. Coll: Isaac Quaynor (Rich might want a Houli/Short replacement soon)
20. Rich: Xavier O'Halloran
21. Bris: Liam Stocker
22. Bris: Conor McFadyen (see GWS liking his upside)
23. GWS: Sam Sturt
24. WC: Curtis Taylor
25. Adel: Riley Grundy

Agree with most of these certainly think the top 8 apart from where Blakey goes is spot on. Only thing is I'd be surprised Adelaide don't take a SA kid first pick seen they have tried very hard to move up the draft. Plus haven't seen Grundy that high.

Who trained with us over preseason?

Was it Bailey Smith and Jack Bytel?

Will Bytel likely slide to the third round and would SOS try to maneuver picks to get him?

  • Josh Williams from Kangas - would love to know WTF happened here, serious wheels and talent, is he the Kangas reverse Scrimshaw after bidding early on him from GC Academy?? Anyone know??
Checked him out on Footywire & they have him listed as 190cm & 77kg. One would hope a 190cm midfielder would not weigh in at only 77kg.

4. Toby Bedford - Dangerous small forward
Loved what I saw of Bedford this year, but isn't he a NGA player for the Dees?

I don't think they have tried hard to move up the draft yet. 3 of their picks are earned picks( well one from Lever) and the other is 13 for Gov.

They could still try trading up of course but they mightn't get a buyer. If they keep their current picks i see them going medium term with high level talent for the next gen. It is scary imo what their development could do with RCD, Williams and then Grundy along with the local Valente.

I feel their veterans are all 28-30 and have 2-3 years left to have a red hot go for a flag with their current senior squad.

Meanwhile, they do what they do very well and develop the likes of Fogarty, Himmelberg, RCD, Williams, Grundy and Valente to regenerate when the veterans are finishing up.

I just couldn't justify them taking Hately first up. But of course they may.

What about this for an idea:

#1 for #2 and #24
2019 1st for #3 and #29

We would have #2/#3/#24/#29
GCS would have 2 Top 10 picks this year (#1/#6) and probably 2 Top 10 picks next year. (4 up from 3)

Also gives us a 2nd (#29) to swap for next year if AFL stick to the pick trading rules (currently no 2019 2nd or 5th but have extra 3rd)

If no-one bids on BSOS before #24 we could secure King/Smith/McHenry

Problem is, that we need a future 2nd coming back if we trade our 2019 1st and CG don't have one.

We either trade with GC, for multiple picks this year, for pick 1 or a 3rd club needs to get involved

Still a huge wrap for Rankine but I'm starting to warm to Walsh.
Walsh is definitely the safer & more reliable choice of the two (Attitude/Drive/Victorian/Leader/Consistency).
For some reason I just don't get what everyone sees in Lukosius, not sure why but he reminds me of a Schache or Boyd. Reckon the King bros will turn out to be much better.

I feel like Rankine is a Cyril Rioli/Mcleod hybrid. Will be an absolute superstar but probably doesn't get enough bf the ball to demand pick 1 status.
I think Walsh will turn out to be the next Selwood/Shuey/Cotchin no real standout attributes but extremely consistent and very good in all areas. Has real potential for growth and win a brownlow one day. Can see Cripps, Dow & Walsh as the engine room for our next flag (Hopefully Setterfield too).

gee be nice to take a number one who turned out the pick of his draft - been hodge & that st kilda peanut then daylight really..........

Would have been thrilled with Hodge at 1, but have you heard of this guy.... ?

Absolutely elite board member... Apparently handy footballer too.

I wonder if Phantoms simply won't hold as much appeal any more given we now have live trading.
It will likely be a slowish start with the live trading this year, but reckon clubs will get a hang of it going forward and it could get quite frenetic.

It's hard to put an order of anything down as there are three ways to look at things:
1. From a Phantom Draft perspective
2. From a Power Ranking point of view
3. From a point of view of players you'd want at the club
Each one could net you a different order.

Right now I have my top ten accordingly, from players i'd want at the CFC
1. Walsh
2. Rankine
3. Max King
4. Rozee
5. Lukosius
6. Collier-Dawkins
7. Smith
8. McLennan
9. Clark
10. Caldwell

My top 10 in the upcoming draft, just a poor man's opinion.

1. Carlton - Sam Walsh
2. Gold Coast - Max King
3. Gold Coast - Ben King
4. St Kilda - Jack Lukosius
5. Port Adelaide - Izak Rankine
6. Gold Coast - Bailey Smith
7. West Bulldogs - Connor Rozee
8. Adelaide - Jackson Hately
9. GWS - Jordan Clark
10. Port Adelaide - Luke Valente

I know that some folks think Lukosius is a once a generation player, a new Nick Reiwoldt, and may he will be. But I just don't see it, I see more Justin Westoff than Nick. On the other hand I am much more bullish about Max King, he has a little bit of a young Paul Salmon about him (though I am major projecting here).

Since I like Max King more than Luko, I say Gold Coast takes the twins early, and then selects a midfielder with pick 6.

Yes, I expect lots of ridicule. It is what mock drafts are for, to laugh at fools like me.

Lastly, I genuinely feel that Sam Walsh is the perfect pick for us. He will be the best in this draft? Maybe not, but if he isn't he'll still be close to the best-in-draft. But I do know that he is an ultra-professional with real leadership about him. Premiership teams have leaders and standard setters (e.g Luke Hodge, Joel Selwood). Sam Walsh will be that to us after Crippa & Doc have done their turn.

I am excited, we are the best 2 win team in AFL/VFL history.

There’s no way GC won’t take the two SA boys.

Or do a deal before hand to gift them to Adelaide/Port

They could walk out with another 3-4 top 20 picks!

Too many kids in 1 year I hear you say....

2019 first rounder for #3

Take Walsh at #1 and Rankine at 3 ?

OMFG

Leaves us shot for next year tho....FA avenue here we come!

#1/2019 1st for #2/#3/#29 - on trade #29 to anyone for 2019 2nd

#2 to PA for #5/#10
#3 to ADE for #8/#13
Trade #10/#13 to GCS for #6.

We have #5/#6/#8
GCS have #1/#10/#13/2019 1st

I'm liking more 'n' more of turning #1 into multiple picks. This includes (I hate to say it) trading our 2019 First Pick. I thought we needed security for next years draft, but going all in this year, is a risk I hope SOS & co do go for. We build an extremely promising list (+ added depth, + improved fitness, + improved ability to stick to a game plan and not capitulate) then we start looking mighty attractive for FAs in 2019 and beyond. Then the fun really begins for all us long suffering, keyboard surfing CFC tragics. We've bided our time, let's tough it out for one more season of some pain (+ some bloody well fought wins), then we see the Promised Land in 2020. #ALL_IN

I'm sure the AFL would give us an exception considering how many 1st round picks we have on the list

On [device_name] using BigFooty.com mobile app

You are kidding?

Just like they gave us a priority pick?

AFL won't give us jack, nada, zipo and zilch. They would enforce the rule 100% for sure

Any scenario involving trading #2019 1st must include a second round coming back, and as mentioned the Suns don't have one to give.

Most of these trades are fantasy land.
Gold Coast have a great draft hand, which they should keep.
Port is happy where they are, they will get an SA boy.
Crows are too far down for us.

There would still be a chance that Port and or Crows coming hunting for earlier picks, either side could include both us and GC
