If SOS can somehow manage to get 2 top 10 picks this year and we get Smith/Caldwell or some sort of similar combo you people will find me at Ikon Park on Friday erecting a statue of him.

To me, Walsh looks like the type of guy who would motor on till he's 35-36 y.o. in an outside role.
Lets get 400 games out of him on the wing![]()

Absolutely has the body shape, endurance and game style that could get to 400.
I hope GWS draft Jye Caldwell.
We then poach him in 3 years.
Sam Walsh and Jye Caldwell, those are my two favourites this draft.
Very quiet on here...........
Unfortunately looks like Adelaide. Twomey is generally pretty spot on with top 10 selections.
Not many seem thrilled picking Walsh
I understand where you're coming from and if Rankine was Victorian I would certainly be looking very hard but he isn't. There is a genuine flight risk with this kid, he doesn't run defensively and he has no left foot. If we were to take a risk I don't think it's Rankine despite his immense talent. I still think we need to build through the middle but we are desperate for what Rankine brings through the forward half. I'm certainly not jealous of the position SOS is in.Can't get my head around this mindset.
List development is perpetual - it doesn't end. We'll be adding new players every single year for as long as the competition exists. Rankine this year and a balanced mid next year isn't all that different to Walsh this year and a small forward next year. The key consideration should be which type of player are you more likely to be able to secure in 2019 or 2020. To me - that's a midfield accumulator. Recruitment needs to be, in some ways, opportunistic. As nice as it would be to lay out a 36 step guide to building a premiership list in a swish powerpoint presentation, the reality is that you don't know what picks you'll have in any given year, who will be available at those picks, and which pre-listed players you may be able to lure over and for what price.
Let's look at meat & potatoes production mids and x-factor small-ish forwards taken in the first round over the last few years:
2017
Mids - Brayshaw, Dow, LDU, Cerra, Clark, Coffield, O'Brien, Richards
Smalls - Rayner, Stephenson, Higgins
2016
Mids - McGrath, Taranto, McCluggage, Setterfield, SPS, Scrimshaw, Brodie, Bowes, Simpkin, Venables, Perryman, Gallucci, Berry, Powell-Pepper
Smalls - Ainsworth, Florent
2015
Mids - Mills, Oliver, Parish, Hopper, Ah Chee, Kennedy, Fiorini, Lovell, Cuningham
Smalls - Milera, Rioli, Gresham
2014
Mids - Brayshaw, De Goey, Ahern, Duggan, Ellis, Weller
Smalls - Petracca, Pickett, Cockatoo, Garlett
2013
Mids - Kelly, Bontempelli, Scharenberg, Aish, Salem, Freeman, Sheed, Cripps, Jones, Lang, Dunstan, Acres
Smalls - Billings, Lennon
If we're satisfied with our ability to retain Rankine, he should probably be the priority this year. You simply don't get the opportunity to draft a player of his skill set all that often. Whereas while Walsh may indeed be "better" than many other midfielders, there is always a high representation of ball winners at the top end of the draft and we can afford to invest multiple draft picks over multiple years to continually strengthen that part of our list.
Furthermore, a team will usually only have 1 x-factor small forward on the park, and getting the "right" one has a huge impact on performance. Whereas most sides will run 8-12 midfielders (full or part time), and the collective output is more impactful than any one player getting their 30 touches.
All that being said - I don't want Rankine with Pick 1. If we want Rankine, continue to play the game and make all the right noises about Walsh, and draw an offer from GC. Pick 3 gets Rankine, and we can secure, at the very least, a decent second round pick in the bargain, which nets us that extra midfield accumulator (Stocker, RCD, Valente, McHenry - good chance one of these guys is there in the mid 20's). If we can get more than a second rounder included (extra pick, future pick upgrade), all the better.

Blakey will definitely be selected. SOS has already declared he's a massive fan.
Sam Fisher has to be selected off the back of his 2018 campaign.
Agree with Walsh at 1. Whispers about Rankine seem to be going cold. Feel like it's the same case as Fogarty from last year. Publicly we had a lot of interest but we were never going to select him. It was always out of Richards and O'brien.
I'd like to see only one of Lamb, Goddard and Bugg selected.
Would like the rest of our selections to be untried players. Lets see if we can unearth a star as opposed to selecting a tried player that will merely fill a void for the Northern Blues.
There's was an article today on the fox website outlining tha th blues can't trade next year first rounder with out getting multiple future picks back as well because we have traded future picks already.we would need to get GWS number 9 for next years first. Just on pure fairness of what we are likely to give back (3-8) and Caldwell will be gone by 11. Probably even by 9 anyway.
Ben Cavarra = Andrew Gallucci
Matt Walker = Blaine Johnson

He is the perfect GWS to Carlton player. Has had some injuries issues which could continue for a year or 2 until he learns how to use his body. Request trade to VIC, 2nd round pick gets it doneI hope GWS draft Jye Caldwell.

For example, Gold Coast might want to do a live trade on draft night with Carlton. There's was an article today on the fox website outlining tha th blues can't trade next year first rounder with out getting multiple future picks back as well because we have traded future picks already.
Apparently ten clubs are impacted.
Doesn't make a lot of sense when clubs like Geelong and Collingwood could still trade current future first round picks in the trade period despite not having used the minimum 2 in 4 years but the blues who have taken 7 first rounder in the last 3 can't trade a future for another first rounder this year.
You'd be wrong on that. Most will be thrilled with Walsh.
There has been good debate here but not many will be disappointed with Walsh.
On a serious note, if GC select Rankine, do you think he'll sign an extension or leave at the first available opportunity?
If we assume we pick Walsh at 1 and BSOS with 77 who do we pick at 69 & 71?
I am hoping 1 or 2 names like Bytel Berry Bowman Joyce Koschitzke Fletcher Podhajski slip through
Pick One in the rookie draft could be for a player we rate has slipped through if not then a mature body?
Then 2 mature bodies like Blakey & Goddard with the other 2 picks
Yes please. Would be over the moon with either Bytel, Berry and Joyce.
Pretty confident Bytel will be off the board though.
Joyce will be a star!
