VFL Casey 2026 thread

Thats a significant list turnover. Surprised by a couple of the outs.
Aside from Laurie and Campbell that’s pretty much all the “Not good enough for AFL, but very good for VFL” players gone from both the Melbourne and Casey lists.

Plenty of times in 2025 the entire midfield rotations at Casey were Laurie, Hardie, Woewodin, Brown, Billings, Culley and Baldi so it will be a really different look in 2026.

If Melbourne has a poor year with injury as is looking likely I can see Casey being in for some torrid games with that loss of depth.

Old mate Coach Cam did a pretty comprehensive write up of the Casey lineup for this year if anyone is interested.

That was quite a good read, better than half the trash I read on AFL website, fair dinkum list turnover but I like the idea that we might unearth a couple of gems.

We have some young kids who will have played with a lot of them too which might just help if they have to cut their teeth at Casey for a while. I can see a few of our veteran players spending some time in Casey this year and more next year which will give them some of the protection they will need.

Ah-Mu looked quite imposing in the Melbourne intra today.

There was a shorter forward who did a few nice things that I assume was a Casey listed player also.

Most of the other Casey top up players looked a bit out of their depth against the AFL guys but you’d expect that.

I hope we're tracking Ah-Mu's progress throughout the year at casey. There's something to work with there if we consider listing him further down the road

You're thinking of Paddy Cross who kicked 3 goals today.

Last year I thought Cross has a bit of X-factor in that he doesn’t look like much but seemed to be able to make something happen in the forward line. And I didn’t even recognise him today!

Thanks for identifying him.

Tairon Ah Mu will be a must watch for Casey. Hes going to be throwing defenders around like helpless droopy armed children.

Anyone hang and watch the Casey / North sim after the main game?

Not that I care too much for a preseason game but what joke that afl listed can't play due to seniors not have a game. Round 0 should be different but the fact you don't automatically wave that after a game cancelled half way through is comical.
Pardon the intrusion etc. but this is very odd. Our VFL played a praccy vs the cats on Saturday and we had several AFL listed players playing.

Same set of circumstances I would have thought with Cats playing round 0 as well and us starting round 1 same as you guys.

Respected VFL commentator Jason Bennett will return to the airwaves this season with the ABC, following his shock axing at Channel 7 earlier in the year.

The ABC and the VFL will join together for the 2026 season with one match each round to be shown by the national broadcaster, as well as one final in each of the first week of finals, both preliminary finals, and the grand final.

"I'm so grateful for the chance to remain involved with the VFL, which is a competition I hold in the highest regard, with players, coaches, volunteers and fans who invest so much into it," Bennett said.

"They’re all in it for the right reasons, and it makes for a league that bridges old-fashioned community footy with the elite level. It retains its raw, old-school appeal, but with a healthy dollop of elite AFL-quality talent that makes for some scintillating footy."

Bennett — long-regarded as one of the best callers in the game — shared his shock last month when he parted ways with Channel 7.

"Ultimately, I am just a fan who found his way into the commentary box,’" Bennett wrote on social media.

"So, I've always called through the eyes of a fan, tried to stay out of the way and let the moments speak for themselves. In my mind, the players and coaches are the heroes and always will be.

"The love I've felt on social media over the past 11 years has not gone unnoticed. Thank you — it means a lot."

Bennett will be joined on the coverage by experienced ABC caller Matt Clinch, football analyst Gemma Bastiani, and former Hawthorn player Daniel Harford.

The games will be aired on free-to-air television and ABC iview, and will also be simulcast to ABC listen and the AFL's distribution channels.

The ABC last broadcast the VFL in 2014.

Come on ABC, just let Phil Cleary run loose as a boundary rider

From the sounds of it Bennett will be calling AFL games on radio too? Another article i read seemed to suggest as much but don't know if it's valid
