Didn't he kick the match winner?
My memory is he kicked a cracking goal on debut, maybe goal of the round. And I think it was late when the game was tight.

Just checked, he kicked one goal from 1 kick and 1 handball in an 8 point win over Geelong.

For those who have been watching VFL: is it fair to say that of our young listed players, Bedford and Chandler are around the mark as small forwards (while not dominating VFL level), Van Rooyen looks very promising as a tall forward... then you're down to our 'senior' depth like Dunstan, Melksham, Brown, Baker etc while many of our other younger draftees are a year or more from pressing for senior games?

If that's a fair summary, it goes to show that you're never more than 2-3 more key injuries away from starting to struggle for AFL depth.

Pretty much it. All of the draftees of '20 and '21 have 'shown signs' and had some good patches/moments, but seem a bit too inconsistent ATM to be seriously pushing for selection.

No list has that much depth. The fact that we have Tomlinson, Smith, Weid already as depth is crazy.

We've got Harmes, Sparrow and Brayshaw as midfield depth.

Maybe we don't have a gun small forward as depth but I mean who does. List is in great shape atm

I agree with your summary, but I don’t think any other team would be in a significantly better position though.

The depth for the backline is already in the seniors, and there’s already Jackson, Pickett, Rivers, Jordon and Sparrow playing in the seniors too. Some other clubs might have many of those equivalents sitting in the twos and have the Oskar Baker, Jake Melksham and Luke Dunstan types in the senior team instead. Sure that would look like having promising youth in the seconds, but Melbourne’s promising youth are mostly premiership players already.

Finally, Casey are a true development team for Melbourne. They don’t play to win per se, they play to develop players for Melbourne. I think some of Melbourne’s players could get bigger numbers if playing on ball, but instead they are played in the position that they will play if they get called up to Melbourne. Jimmy Munro is racking up touches as an on baller and that could be Chandler or Laurie doing that, but those guys aren’t coming in to play on ball if Clarry or Trac get injured so why develop them there (now)?

Its not like the inconsistent youngsters would be needed to contribute something extraordinary even if we had to play them, we have enough stars to pick up the slack, they could still be effective in a good team I have no doubt. Depth and inexperience is only a problem if your top end is shallow.

Obviously we're in a good position compared to most other teams. Just interested to know what's still to come if we get injuries. Looks like Van Rooyen the only potential debutant this year if he keeps progressing and a tall forward spot opens up due to injury.

I'm not against the likes of Dunstan coming in and playing a role at all, that's why we got him. Less enthused about the potential for Baker to be next half back in line for a game but you'd like to think it won't come to that once Salem, Lever and Petty are back.

If we get injuries?

Last match we didn't have Brown, Lever and Petty to select. Who else would you like to not be available?

Yes, if we get injuries at training or next week's game. It's a question mate, not my dream scenario.

What I'm saying mate is we have already coped without our key forward an 2 key backs as well as 2 HBFs. We have clear midfield depth. What else ya wanna see tested lol

Yeah I get that, it's a hypothetical I'm interested in firstly because I enjoy seeing young players come through and get given a chance, and secondly because it's a live scenario as to how we cover any further injuries in defence before Salem/Lever return.

Not concerned about midfield depth, obviously you can't replace Oliver and Trac if they get injured but our next rung are all capable of being decent inside mid role.

Can still throw Tom McDonald back and then if we still lost tall defenders I'm sure theyd just ruck Jackson more and have Gawn drop back more often.
