Thought this was a very good time to post this. Interested to read on Geelong's site that the so-called "pact" made after the 2008 Grand Final was yet another instalment in a long line of football mythology.

Not surprisingly, it never happened.

http://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/2013-07-01/cat-pact-never-existed

Confirmed by Ling, Ablett and Tom Harley. I particularly like Harley's final comment:

"If you're relying on external motivation to drive an outcome for you, then I think you're really barking up the wrong tree," Harley said.

Couldn't agree more.

Even if it did exist, it means nothing. What, so you make a pact to never lose again, and you can pull that off? Why don't the Cats just make a pact to never lose another match again?

What the...?

I don't believe you guys - you're falling for the two card trick a few days before The Big One.

Never under-estimate the power our boys (past and present) have in messing with the minds of The Hawks. Even little Gazza is still playing it for us.

"Pact? Nah, no pact. Oh, Chappy may have said something. Yeah, nah, no pact."

Love it. LOVE IT.

Pact was a term that the HUN used, the actual quotes of chappy were
Paul Chapman said:
"We've said to ourselves that we don't, if we can, ever let Hawthorn beat us again because we still hurt from that. It's obviously in the back of our heads, but there's nothing we can do about it now.
"All you can do is show that you're still hurting and do the best you can when you play them next. For me, that's something that motivates me against them

So not so much a pact, as a bit of motivation. But as I've said before, I don't think the boys ever go out to play thinking that they would be quite happy to lose the match against whoever they are playing that day.

Call me some kind of crazy statsturbator but I would have thought things like gameplan, fitness and form were more important to our previous victories and our chances this weekend than 'mind games' and pacts.

Hey you forgot the one that Hawks supporters insist is the sole reason - Luck.

There was a piece that Ch 7 did prior to either Rd 19 last year or Rd 1 this yr that had Jummy and Chappy talking about the rivalry and Chappy talk quite clearly about the fact the " he never wanted to lose to them again.. not that it would never happen but just to do everything possible to try not to as long as he was playing.."

that does not consitiute a pact per se but certainly indicates that 08 started a fire that is clearly still burning....

Pact or no pact - we are in their heads....

Go Catters

I love it. Nothing like a bit of footy mythology to generate excitement for the supporters. I agree most I have read over the years indicate that there never was a pact, just in Chappy's head as Kelly put it.

The biggest reason some hawks fans think we keep beating them is all the frees Joel gets from ducking. :D

This sort of stuff winds my mind back to one of my favourites Western Movies " The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" The quote at the end of the movie

"When the legend becomes fact , print the legend" ,

So many "facts" that are know from various reports thru history are half truths and exaggerations , why spoil the story.

This has been know for some time, it seems to always crop up before every bloody Hawks game.

Still, all that matters is all Cats, young and old, rise up to avoid being beaten by them. Considering the Hawks are sitting on top, whatever gets the job done is good enough for me. Not much else to say on this topic. So let's just enjoy:

Didn't he ask for Clarko's head after Round 1 this year? Hmmm.

Aw. I like a good pact. :(

Believe Partridge, believe!!!!

Anyway, if you dont- why do you still have your "that makes 10 zipperheads" av up. :p

I don't his profile pic. Can you or Partridge explain it?

His av? It is a reference to the 10 games won in a row by Geelong against Hawthorn.

It is also a dig towards Partridges' own persona around here- that he is a big old grump who has no sense of humour.Kinda like Eastwoods character in the acclaimed film "Grand Torino"

Did I explain that ok Parts?

I get the "big old grump" as you put it bit, but I thought it was about the 10 in row but wasn't sure.

Oh Partridge, why did you have to spoil it for the believers? :( Those who like a bit of romance.

Harley, Ablett and Ling said it's not true, hey? They're no longer current players, although very much Geelong. Still I 'prefer' to believe Chapman, who was interviewed about the 'pact' -

"Chapman, who was one of Geelong's best against the Swans, admitted he and his teammates were still hurting from the 2008 Grand Final defeat that reignited the two teams' fierce rivalry.

So far, their pact remains intact - the Cats have not lost to the Hawks in four tight matches since the '08 season-decider.

"It's always been a good rivalry, especially after the '08 grand final," Chapman told the Geelong Advertiser.

"We've said to ourselves that we don't, if we can, ever let Hawthorn beat us again because we still hurt from that. It's obviously in the back of our heads, but there's nothing we can do about it now."

Thanks dazbroncos - I saw that piece on TV and Chappy talking about the pact.

OK, it may not be a pact sworn in blood, but I am sticking with Chappy and the pact!

Wait! Maybe it's a secret pact - made between current players!

So Partridge, won't you, indulge those who like a little mythology or folklore?

Now on to the Curse! It seems there was a previous curse!

"1985-1992: Geelong cannot beat Hawthorn. It loses 11 on the trot in all manner of situations: conceding match-winning leads, just failing after great comebacks, losing in the dying seconds of a match. Hawthorn 14 wins, Geelong 2 wins."
