There's a pic of Tredders in todays Tiser wearing what appears to be a bra but is in fact a vest for carrying satellite tracking equipment. Visitors to training will have regularly seen players wearing them.

This technology was developed in conjunction with the AIS, is approved by the AFL and apparently used by many of the clubs.

I thought it would be of interest to post some information from the manufacturer's website about the Catapult tracking system.

World Leader in wearable athlete tracking technology

If you are ready for the next level of insight into individual or team performance, look no further.

Developed in conjunction with the Australian Insitute of Sport and the Cooperative Research Centre for microTechnology, minimaxX is the next generation in athlete performance monitoring solutions.

With an array of precision microtechnology sensors in a small, unobtrusive package, minimaxX records all of the important metrics for analysis of athlete performance.

Measure:

Player position on the field, speed, distance and acceleration
Heart rate
Impact loading, reaction times, effort
Team structure: attacking or defensive formations
Manage player interchanges during a match or physical effort in training sessions. Make tactical decisions on the fly based on real scientific data. Receive all this information in real time via a wireless link from up to 120 athletes. Powerful analysis software enables routine reporting and analysis. Totally portable system – use at training venures and at home and away games.
How does it work?

Athletes wear a small minimaxX transmitter on their upper back in a custom designed garment. The minimaxX measures and analyses data from 11 sensors including fast 5 Hz GPS, multi-axis accelerometers, heart rate monitor and more. The data is recorded on board for later upload and detailed analysis, and is simultaneously broadcast to a remote computer for real time analysis. Coaches can see real time performance and tactical data scrolling on a computer screen during matches or training to make tactical changes, improve effort or manage rehabilitation from injury.

Approved by the AFL for use in official matches. Preferred by most of the teams in the AFL.

Fitness Analysis

MinimaxX proven 5Hz GPS captures more details of player movement, and gives you insight into acceleration and braking loads.

Use wireless monitoring to manage interchanges based on real objective data.

MinimaxX “Player Load” index measure total effort – whether in running play or during stoppages and ruck work. It even works in Telstra Dome when GPS is no longer available.

Set up definitions per player for good performance. Have the software wirelessly monitor key performance metrics and alert you if these definitions are not met.

Generate easy one touch reports with periodised data.

Strategic Analysis

Existing video analysis tools are typically fixed installations at stadiums which means they can't be used at training or for away games. Also, the analysis is usually only available hours or days after the match.

With minimaxX you can see animations of players movement and structure on the pitch in real time using the wireless capability. You can replay these animations to show passages of play from 10 seconds ago, 10 minutes or last week. What’s more, the minimaxX system is completely portable; use it on any one of your training pitches, during training camps or away games.

You can synchronise these animations with video footage, player statistics from AFL stats providers and physical performance information like player speed and heart rate. You can even export the animation as a movie file to use in other software programs.

Rehabilitation

Imagine the value gained by having your best players on the pitch more often! During injury rehabilitation, use minimaxX to closely monitor velocity, heart rate, distance, acceleration and impact loading. Set alarms personalised for each player and the software will alert you if a player is exceeding allowable thresholds.

Yes that was the thinking on Bay 13. :)

Here's a pic of Salopek wearing one of the vests

As discussed a month ago when I posted a link to that same website here :)

I'm intrigued to know how it is practically effective.
Stuart Dew's Cat crushing performance in the recent GF occurred when Alistair Clarkson had lost track of him (though Hardwick hadn't) and Dewy was being 'rested' up forward.
I've seen this sort of stuff commented on for a few years now. I'll be stuffed if I know how it could have turned a Nathan Lonie into a Michael Wilson. My suspicion is it would have just measured Nathan Lonie's 'Loniness' and I can't really see the point for match day.

Not really my area, but if you know exactly how many km/min/speed/recoveries a player has in him then you would know within seconds when to take him off and for how long... It's the sort of thing you'd do "by eye" otherwise.

It gets rid of the possibility of stopping at the Alby for a beer or three in the middle of a run around Alberton, then sprinkling water over your face and running gasping into Alberton Oval telling the coach how hard you ran. ;)

What it can do though is confirm how hard a player goes at a contest. Whether he really did attack it as hard as he could or if he managed to time it so that he missed the big impact.

It does tell you who is putting in the miles on the field and it also helps to identify where they run and it can then be used to educate the player in that he needs to do more running or let him know he is doing enough running but some of it is dumb pointless running.

You are right it does not replace the coach however it gives the coach another tool to get the message that he is preaching accross.

Is there some device in it that allows the coaches to come to the bench? eg buzzer, vibrator ?

If so, what are the rules nowadays about technological communication with a player on the field? eg could the device be used to tell a player where to run etc?

Hope my wife doesn't get hold of this technology then!

Hmmm. I wonder if theres a market for Catapault "scramblers" then...

Might have to look into it ;)
