Gotta love the title of this article. Sorry cat fans but you're slowly finding out that ottens is not the answer to your forward line problems. Ben Graham was a much better forward.

Cats go from Brad to worse
05 March 2005 Herald Sun
Mark Stevens

THIS time last year Geelong was on the brink of the Wizard Cup final. Now, coach Mark Thompson doesn't know where his Cats stand.

GEELONG 2.4 8.6 13.8 15.13 (103)
HAWTHORN 3.1 6.3 10.5 15.7 (97)
Goals: Geelong: H Playfair 3 J Kelly 2 D Milburn 2 C Ling P Riccardi S Byrnes J Rooke K Kingsley C Enright P Chapman B Otten. Hawthorn: M Williams 7 H Miller 3 R Ladson N Lonie L Hodge S Beaumont L Brown.
Best: Geelong: J Kelly C Ling M Scarlett H Playfair K Tenace. Hawthorn: M Williams S Mitchell J Thurgood H Miller L Franklin.
Injuries: Nil.
Reports: Nil.
Umpires: T Parnell D Sully C Donlan C Kanalinos. Crowd: Approx 3000 at Optus Oval.
Geelong rolled Hawthorn by a goal in a practice match at Optus Oval yesterday, but Thompson wasn't jumping for joy following his team's first win of the year.

"If you looked at our form and the way we're playing, you wouldn't say we're a great side at the moment," Thompson said.

"I know we've got some good players who can potentially play well, but they haven't really done it this year."

Boom recruit Brad Ottens was disappointing in attack and forward Kent Kingsley had a dirty day, leaving Thompson with headaches.

Ottens missed a shot at goal from 20m directly in front in the first term and sprayed another kick out on the full from 45m in the second.

He finished with one goal, but was beaten by Danny Jacobs when not trying his luck in the ruck.

Thompson said he was unhappy with what he had seen of the Ottens-Kingsley union.

"It hasn't worked. They haven't worked together yet that well," he said.

"We probably thought that Brad Ottens' best form would be in the second half of the year. It's Kent working with Brad and it's Brad working with Kent -- and the rest of the team working with a new person there."

One positive in attack for the Cats was Henry Playfair, who took five marks at centre half-forward and kicked three goals in the first half before heading to defence.

Hawthorn kicked the last five goals of the contest and was deep in attack when the siren confirmed a 15.13 (103) to 15.7 (97) scoreline.

With Mark Williams finishing with seven goals and Harry Miller showing glimpses of brilliance, losing coach Alastair Clarkson was far happier than his Geelong counterpart.

"Our trouble over the first couple of games is we haven't been able to score enough goals, and it was pleasing to be able to kick 15," Clarkson said.

Although Clarkson has hinted Williams could spend more time in the midfield, he might be having second thoughts after the small forward's heroics yesterday.

Miller finished with three goals, including a solo effort in the final term that produced the biggest roar of the game.

Ohhhh what a beautiful moooooooooooooorning :D

I especially had to like this bit.

"If you looked at our form and the way we're playing, you wouldn't say we're a great side at the moment," Thompson said.

Well hello.... You don't have to be Einstein to work out Geelong were overrated and not as good as everyone thought....... actually come to think of it... apparantly you do have to be Einstein.... because I was the only person in here not gullible enough to think Geelong were instantly on their way to glory because of 1 flukey season with an easy draw. I think deep down Bomber Thompson knows they aren't that good as well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... You give up the best player in your club and get the pick of 3 players from another club to trade for.... you do it to Brisbane/West Coast/St Kilda/Port Adelaide.... and you have no trouble picking up 3 stars amongst their team.... you try and do it with Geelong... and you find me even 3 players that you would trade a Chris Judd for. Ottens? bwahah Gary Hacklett Jnr? bwahaha. You can't. They are crap.

and where did the West Coast ********ers finish last year????????????
Boys like Lynch, McDougall, Hansen will not win you finals.....average players that crumble under pressure...

A Geelong supporter talking about crumbling under pressure... oh my :D

Yes.. and all those big forwards you just mentioned are around 21- 22 years old. My how we are struggling in the big man department :D At least we will be in the finals... unlike Craplong and their bunch of overrated chokers. Has Gary Hacklett Jnr washed the skid marks from his playing shorts yet? or is he gunna leave it there for the next time he hears footsteps in a final? :D

TP, agreed our pre-season form has been sh*thouse. Prefer to wait until the real stuff starts before making any outrageous comments like yours. It's all opinions at the moment.

I think he's kept those particular shorts for next finals, so in fact, you are correct.

Mate... I didnt even wait until pre-season.... i have been saying it since last October. I don't need to see them struggling in pre-season to know they are overrated and 1 year wonders.

This is rich. Last year Geelong played in as many finals over a 3 week time span as West Coast have in 4 years.
Cats are the chokers? I think we actually managed to win a final last year, maybe fourth time lucky for your boys TP.

This is a strange statement by Bomber. It sounds like he's already making excuses for his next dozen games.Surely highly prized and highly priced recruits should be expected to deliver from day 1.

I always quite liked Ottens but if he thinks Richmond supporters were harsh, I reckon he's in for a rude shock at the pressure he'll be under from Cat supporters and local press in the next few months if he doesn't bring home the bacon.

I can see him providing quite a bit of ammo for the Tp's of bigfooty too.

Good luck donut.:p

Yeh, lot happening in October. Just confirms your obvious bias. Happy for the critiques, as long as you are willing to come back on the board and eat some humble pie if you're wrong. Time will tell I guess.

You are either very insightful or a complete fool.

Ottens was beaten by Jacobs, who goes up to Ottens shoulder when he was up forward.

Ottens did not do as well as a 'boom recruit' should in the ruck against our backups, Robbie Campbell and Simon Taylor.

Ottens was a terrible acquisition and I'd rather Maloney any day.

We are extremely happy with our aquisition :D :D. I rekon Moloney will just get better as well.

I don't think the cats are gone just yet, but its fun giving it back to them after a pre season of how great the Geelong list is.

Bring on round 1 i can't wait for some real Stuff.

Yes just like I was scared to come back when I was telling Dockers supporters last year how overrated their team was when they were sitting 4th half way through last year and the Eagles were on 5 wins from 13 games. Just like I told the Dockers then that we would finish above them.... I am telling you now.

So... another new nick Linga_is no_one?

Yes, but you are a Hawks supporter. Your list is rubbish.

Geelong had midfielders like Moloney in spades. He would not be in our top 5.
I'm more than happy for them to take a punt on Ottens as a forward / change ruckman.
