Bartel did a break down on why GWS and Brisbane beat us

The put speed on the ball, GWS do via handball releasing the ball forward and Lions do it with short kicking.

Short kicks or handballs and constantly changing angles means our defense can't settle.

Can other teams do this to us? Yes but they 1 need the players to do it and 2 have to be winning the contest.
To be fair... literally every team tries to do this week in week out to everyone...

We also did the exact same thing to collingwood and beat them.

Is this our similar magic sauce to beating collingwood?

It comes down to who can win the contests, create turnovers in the right spots on the ground, and then spread best forward.

Does anyone legitimtwly think only GWS and brisbane attempt this?? I feel like its become a basic attempted plan now that all teams try to do to one another

It’s a different game now. The club won’t expect Dempsey to put his body on the line to the extent players did a few decades ago.

I know one year recently, a first year player laid 10 tackles and came off expecting a pat on the back but instead was directed to stay on the outside as that was his role.

Not excusing Dempsey but that is the way it’s structured these days.
I'll acknowledge that I've always been an unabashed fan of our #28. And yet even I can get frustrated with how he approaches contests at times.

But I also acknowledge that it's apparently quite clear that the M.C. generally wants him to play to his strengths as an outside runner and user. Even if he threw himself into half the contests that some of us think he should/could, he'd most likely come off second best (at best) or injured (at worst). On that basis, I think he's as much playing to team instructions as he is picking and choosing which hard balls to contest.

As it is, he covers the ground well and keeps pressure on in the general sense, which is most of what the modern winger is asked to do defensively. Maybe I don't watch enough games outside of our own. But I don't feel like he's falling well short of the competitive standard set by most outside runners in modern footy. Which means I'm relatively resigned to seeing him not run straight at every ball, in the interests of both maximising his output for the team and (importantly) making sure he can front up to as many games as possible in any given season.

Like I suspect the M.C. believe, then, I think he's actually tracking more than fine.

We don't know if the virus that Smith had and kept him out last week affected other players. I'm probably clutching at straws but we don't know. It may be why Holmes was started at half back and seemed lethargic.
I must admit that crossed my mind as well.
Hoping it was shades of the Demons Final where it was revealed much later that we had 6-8 under the weather from food poisoning or similar.
Certainly would explain the lack of pressure and run..............

Could have been that, I guess. But just like every other insipid loss since we broke through for that drought-breaking flag in '07, I find it's best to just excuse how poor we were by putting it all down to another 'heavy training block'.

Always wondered what happens if a player gets the runs during a game... Do they just shit their pants or something if its a close final with 5 minutes to go?
