Mark Robinson's stab at the 10 best Geelong players this century (will be in tomorrow’s HUN):

Ablett
Scarlett
Dangerfield
Selwood
Bartel
Hawkins
Stewart
Enright
Johnson
Cameron

Thoughts? Ottens, Taylor, Chapman, Corey, Blicavs missed out, but hard to criticise Robbo’s top 10

They are really struggling to fill up the pages of the paper these days

To be fair it was part of a review of finals week 1. And the first point by Robbo is about the stature of Dangerfield in the game. He then included his top 10 to show where he sees Danger amongst all the other Cats greats this century.

I'm taking Scarlett over Ablett as he helped revolutionize the stationary full back role into a 'Quarterback' play-maker which we are accustom to today.
He also stood toe-to-toe with some of the best power forwards of the modern era and occasionally beat them into submission.

This is purely for what they have done for Geelong over a period of time.
Ablett and Danger probably the greatest 2 players but both having extended stints away.

I know it is very hard to say this though as what the others achieved are probably not happening without some below them and their brilliance.

I’m already changing this in my head, please delete post Ablett is the best player I’ve ever seen it is too hard not to have him number 1!

The 08 grand final that we lost even the final series to get into the 20 grand final, if he didn’t get injured he probably would have found a way for us to win.

Chapman’s time at Geelong has been better than Stewart and Jez.
Stewart has won 5 All Australians played in a premiership and has had his worst year this year and will probably still be in our top 3 for the best and fairest.

Cameron has had an amazing stint at the cats and is one of the best recruits of all time. I see what you are saying and on what he has done for the club it is true, but I think we have more chance of winning a premiership if Chapman was out of a side than if we had Cameron out.

Are we talking about their careers overall or just their contributions to Geelong? Are we rating them on what they accomplished or how important they would be to a team playing the game? Depending on the metrics we're using, the ranking changes.

"Best" voting are always open to interpretation. Footy normally goes for "overall" contribution over a season or career. Personally I'd love to see a "best game" award - where give a rating for an individual game over the season, combined with a "difficulty" booster. For example Heeney may well have won that award on Saturday.

Here’s what Robbo said about Danger that prompted his top 10:

“LEGENDS GROW

1. Patrick Dangerfield

It’s boring but true, finals are strongly influenced by contest and pressure.

The Geelong-Port Adelaide match was done at halftime, and in the first two quarters it had been Max Holmes and Dangerfield who blunted the opposition.

At the main break, Dangerfield had nine contested possessions, which was No.1 on the ground.

He’s a big-time player who, when someone says fight, throws the first punch.”

Degree of difficulty kindof plays into it as well. Tall forward is a tougher position than a half back flank.

Dangerfield has now played nine seasons of top quality football with Geelong, and is a monty to go on next year. That's a longer period of elite play than, say, Bartel.
