CFH Player Review...

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I'm bored ****less right now, as I've had enough of my uni work for one day, and thought I'd do a player review. Yes, the season aint over yet, but not alot will change for us really will it?

Got a problem with me doing it? Bad luck! :D

Feel free to debate all of them if you see fit! I won't do rookie listed players either (bar Jamar). Ox and Rigoni have also been omitted. And please read it, took me ages to do! :)

Armstrong, Steven: Has done enough to suggest he will be a quality player for years to come. Has shown he is skilfull on both his right and left feet and has good hands. Probably needs a good summer in the weight room to add some strength to his game.

Bizzell, Clint: Has been sensational for us down back this year. Has been an Ingerson like General, and his great hands and his precise kicking have been a delight to watch. Can't really hold down a key back post, but has blanketed some quality players. Great pick up.

Breese, Daniel: Has shown good form for Sandy, but can't really say much else. Has come under consideration late in the year, but is yet to get a run. Will be around next year I'd suggest.

Broadbridge, Troy: Before doing his knee, Broady had played some fine games for the club this year, playing down back and even on a wing, showing his great versatility. Player of the future.

Brown, Nathan: Find of the year. Is a ball magnet who get's his possesions right from full back to half forward. Has been a link man out of defence but also offers alot of run through the midfield. Big part of our move back into the 8. Very impressed with him this year.

Bruce, Cameron: One word - Class! The guy oozes it every time he plays. Can play down back, tag through the midfield and even play Centre Half Forward. Has beaten some quaility players all yeah and is an outside chance for AA selection. Future Captain right here...

Clark, Michael: Most will agree that he has not come on, as he rarely plays well for Sandy and he has been on the list since 1999. Big chance to be de-listed at the end of the year.

Ellis, Craig: A great pick up for our defence, but had an interrupted year with suspension and now a serious knee injury. Provided alot of run from half back and held his opponents well enough to curb too much influence, but could do silly things at times. We now realise how important to us he really is with his injury!

Febey, Steven: Has had a horror run with injury this year, and many believe he may not be able to go on next year. We probably could have used his experience in big games, but age and injury have unfortunately caught up with. Interesting to see what happens next year.

Funcke, Ross: Played one or two good games early in the year, but will come under scrutiny at the end of the year. Probably hasn't been given enough chances at senior level and may stay on for another year, but it's hard to tell.

Godfrey, Simon: Has really come on in the 2nd half of the year by doing some superb tagging jobs on Cousins and Kelly to name a few. Love his niggling style as he doesn't mind taking crap all the time from other players. He will be on the list next year now for sure. Developing into a really handy tagger.

Green, Brad: Been terribly disappointing this year for a guy who promises so much. Has shown that he can play in the midfield, but he has been far to inconsistent this year. Has a good left foot kick and has good hands for his size, but he must work harder to become a true threat. He has HUGE potential, just a matter of getting there.

Jamar, Mark: Promoted to the senior list for Guy Rigoni, he has played very well in the ruck for Sandy this year. Is a big lad who is a very good tap ruckman. Needs to work on his skills before he get's a senior run, but is still only 19. Exciting prospect IMO.

Johnstone, Travis: The much maligned Travis has come on in leaps and bounds this year, showing just why we chose him as the number 1 pick at the end of 1997. Has had a better year than the likes of Ottens and Tarrant, and is just all class. More often than not he has great skills and always seems to have plenty of time. Can still play better and more consitently, which is scary for opposition teams.

Jolly, Darren: THE MAN! :D.....seriously, Old Jol has come on well this year. While not being given much time, he has shown he has the potential to be a damaging back up for White Man, and he can even go forward to kick a goal or two. Will only get better.

Lamb, Chris: Many supporters felt this guy should have gone long ago - lucky for us we were WRONG. Has been fantastic at Full Back for us after Nicho went down. Has the strength to go one out and the pace for leads as well. Out of his depth last week, but can also only improve. Provides good run too.

Leoncelli, Andrew: On his day, can be damaging. We have not seen enough if it this year. Can find the ball, but too often doesn't use it well enough and doesn't stand up in big games. Will be around next year, but maybe it's time to blood those young ones in there.

McDonald, Anthony: At the start of the year he played well, but an injury and a continual drop in form has seen his position at the club come under scrutiny. Can provide good run and has a penetrating left foot kick, but is getting old and may well be past his best footy.

McDonald, James: "Juniour" has shown he is also a handy tagger and playmaker for us, but lately he has just been a in a bit of a form slump. Will be good next year after a solid pre-season.

Miller, Brad: When given a senior game, he has been given little game time, but we can tell he will be a very good key position player in the coming years. Showed his best footy in the pre-season comp, and with another full pre season and some time in the weight room, he can only get better.

Molan, Luke: Broke his leg mid year which ruined his season, just as he started to get into some good form for Sandy. Is a big boy who is great over head, and will no doubt come on next year. Would like to see him get a senior run next year, preferably at CHF.

Neitz, David: Our captain and Coleman Medallist has been nothing short of sensational for us this year. Has truly grown into his captaincy and has led from the front. Apart from a slump mid-season, he has cut up all quality full backs that he has faced and has kicked over 70 goals for the year. Strong Mark, thumping kick and he uses his frame superbly. Great to see him hit some awesome form!

Nicholson, Alistair: The bearded one was arguably the form full back of the league before injuring his knee against the Pies. Again, he is only very young and we hope to have him back early, to mid season to once again take on all comers with his big beard! Such a disappointment to lose him mid-season.

Powell, Stephen: Has been sensational in patches, poor in other this year, but we can't ask much more after coming back from a shocking case of OP. Hard nut who gets under the packs to get the ball, he is crucial to our midfield set up. We have struggled in there on the occasions when he has been out through suspension or injury.

Robertson, Russell: The most frustrating player in our side, he can dominate a game in the air and kick 5 one week, then be too busy with his hair the next. Talked up a bit by us as trade bait, over the last few weeks he has shown how good he truly is. Probably can't hold down CHF, but can be used to get one!

Rogers, Aaron: Full Forward who will take time to develop, he has worked his way into the Sandy seniors and last weekend he booted 5 in a half from Full Forward. Like Molan and Miller, he will take time to develop, but looks promising!

Thompson, Scott: In the middle of the year he played some good games before being dropped and injuring his knee. An interesting one, I believe the club will persist with him as he has an air of class about him. One to watch.

Vardy, Peter: Has filled the number 33 shoes very well by kicking 29 goals from his pocked. But, also like 33, he can be very incosistent. But none the less, he has done very well for us by kicking some bags of goals and creating a headache for backmen with his solid hands and his cunning out of the pocket.

Walsh, Peter: Has had a quiet year for his standards. Has played some good games, but just hasn't been his usual self at all. Probably playing with an injury for most of the year, "Whoppa" will be looking to get back to that 2000 form that showed the world just how good he really is.

Ward, Daniel: Injury prevented him from playing early in the season, but has been impressive since. Very quick and has a penetrating kick, his best game was against The Lions when he kicked 4 from his wing. Another one who can still improve.

Wheatley, Paul: Has been very good for us this year, as he can play either end of the ground. Would like to see him tried at CHF, but can also be very damaging off a half back flank. Good hands and a HUGE kick, this guy could be anything!

Whelan, Matthew: Has been good without being brilliant this year. He has played well on some opponents, yet been well beaten by others. He is essential to our backline though with his run and has the future ability to even move into the midfield.

White, Jeff: Has had a very good season, one of his best since 1998. He as been able to play without being troubled by his shins, which has enhanced his game. Fantastic tap ruckman and good around the ground, still has his best years ahead of him.

Williams, Luke: Will probably go at the end of the year, and rightly so. One of those players who cuts it at Sandy level, but can't at AFL.

Woewodin, Shane: Has been solid without being outstanding, he has been able to get plenty of the ball, yet hasn't been all that damaging with it. At least he hasn't been under constant tagging, and he is getting back to some of his better form. We payed him to much to stay, hence letting 33 go....

Yze, Adem: Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Is one of the most damaging kicks in the league, and looks uses the ball well everytime he get's it. Probably our number 1 midfielder, he will go close to AA which will be much deserved. He is just a joy to watch, and will continue to be in the coming years.

There ya go, please feel free to debate at will! :)

Though we where going to wait till the end of the year for this, and allot CAN and hopefully WILL change between now and then, but here's my opinion. And if you want any info on the rookie listed players, footyman would be a good person to ask! :D

Armstrong, Steven: Has done enough to suggest he will be a quality player for years to come. Has shown he is skilful on both his right and left feet and has good hands. Probably needs a good summer in the weight room to add some strength to his game.
Definitely needs to add bulk to his frame, but agreed that he has silky 'Stinger like' skills.

Bizzell, Clint: Has been sensational for us down back this year. Has been an Ingerson like General, and his great hands and his precise kicking have been a delight to watch. Can't really hold down a key back post, but has blanketed some quality players. Great pick up.
Courage personified, couldn't be happier with the way we traded, in effect we got him for Farmer. Will be much better suited to playing on the number 3 forward, which he hopefully will be next year.

Breese, Daniel: Has shown good form for Sandy, but can't really say much else. Has come under consideration late in the year, but is yet to get a run. Will be around next year I'd suggest.
Can't understand why the club don't give him a shot, I hope he can break his way into the side next year. Looks to be a player from what I have seen of him.

Broadbridge, Troy: Before doing his knee, Broady had played some fine games for the club this year, playing down back and even on a wing, showing his great versatility. Player of the future.
Struggled when forced to play too close to goals, but Broady as you said, has played some good games. He is bloody quick, but I'd like to see him give up a little pace for some more size.

Brown, Nathan: Find of the year. Is a ball magnet that gets his possessions right from full back to half forward. Has been a linkman out of defense but also offers allot of run through the midfield. Big part of our move back into the 8. Very impressed with him this year.
Great year so far by Brown Dog, he is a highly underrated player, by our own supporters as well as oppositions. Could possible move more into a midfield role.

Bruce, Cameron: One word - Class! The guy oozes it every time he plays. Can play down back, tag through the midfield and even play Centre Half Forward. Has beaten some quaility players all yeah and is an outside chance for AA selection. Future Captain right here...
I thought Green looked the better of the two in 2000, but Bruce has taken big steps forward over the last couple of years, and has surpassed Green quite easily. Look for him to play more in the middle on his own terms (not as a tagger) in the future.

Clark, Michael: Most will agree that he has not come on, as he rarely plays well for Sandy and he has been on the list since 1999. Big chance to be de-listed at the end of the year.
Was on his last chance this year IMO, and has failed to show enough. Time to go Clarky.

Ellis, Craig: A great pick up for our defense, but had an interrupted year with suspension and now a serious knee injury. Provided allot of run from half back and held his opponents well enough to curb too much influence, but could do silly things at times. We now realise how important to us he really is with his injury!
Definitely plays better on the smaller grounds, i.e. PP, Ellis has been a great pickup. Unfortunately he won't be back until '04, which is a huge blow, I hope he can cut it at the top level when he comes back!

Febey, Steven: Has had a horror run with injury this year, and many believe he may not be able to go on next year. We probably could have used his experience in big games, but age and injury have unfortunately caught up with. Interesting to see what happens next year.
He has said he wouldn't mind playing on next year, but I feel he is really holding up a spot on the list, and cash, as good as he has been for the Dees, it's time for him to retire.

Funcke, Ross: Played one or two good games early in the year, but will come under scrutiny at the end of the year. Probably hasn't been given enough chances at senior level and may stay on for another year, but it's hard to tell.
I seem to be the first person to critisise Funcke, and IMO for good reason. He's a decent VFL footballer at best. I would like to see him delisted.

Don't mind him as a tagger, but his kicking skills can be shocking at times. I'd like to see him remain on our list as our number 1 tagger, but if another tagger with better skills comes along....

Potential is the story of Brad Green, and he needs to start delivering on a regular basis. I'd like to see Brad spend more time in the midfield, especially if the midfield is not firing.

Jamar, Mark: Promoted to the senior list for Guy Rigoni, he has played very well in the ruck for Sandy this year. Is a big lad who is a very good tap ruckman. Needs to work on his skills before he gets a senior run, but is still only 19. Exciting prospect IMO.
Great tap ruckman, not so great kicking skills. Hopefully his kicking can be addressed over the next 1-2 years and he can become the backup ruckman if either Jolly or White are injured.

Can still play better and more consistently, which is scary for opposition teams.
Johno can be very frustrating at times, which is why many supporters have called for him to be traded. Has great skills, and when he's on he can match it with the best. Needs to add more consistency to his game, but overall a good season for the Rolls Royce.

Jolly, Darren: THE MAN! :D.....seriously, Old Jol has come on well this year. While not being given much time, he has shown he has the potential to be a damaging back up for White Man, and he can even go forward to kick a goal or two. Will only get better.
Kick it to Jolly!!
Some supporters laughed at me when I said last year Jolly looks the goods, but he has come along in leaps and bounds to be a great player for us. He's a deadly accurate kick for goal, and perhaps one of the things I like about him best is his ability to HURT opposition ruckman, letting them know that they are not in control, you've got to love him!!

I'll do the other half some later, good work though Adam!

It's getting late so I won't go too long with this.

My delistings are:
Anthony McDonald
Ross Funcke
Michael Clark
Luke Williams

I'd expect a couple more players to be discussed around trade tables.

On Molan, I don't reckon he looked much good at CHF when he had some time there down at Sandringham. Personally I think he's only a defender. But you are a Geelong man CFH so I shouldn't argue with ya.

I'm very worried about Stephen Powell. His kicking has no penetration anymore.

Daniel Breese I reckon should get a game this week in the seniors.

CFH, good to see you had plenty of time on your hands. List discussion is never not important - the more the merrier I think. Will you be in Melbourne for the game on Saturday Night?

Ellis, Craig: A great pick up for our defence, but had an interrupted year with suspension and now a serious knee injury. Provided alot of run from half back and held his opponents well enough to curb too much influence, but could do silly things at times. We now realise how important to us he really is with his injury!

Response:Ellis although provided a band-aid solution for our weak backline this year is not an answer to our problems - even when fully fit.

I feel his decision making when under pressure is poor at best, and his disposal is v. suspect.

We wont see him next year due to teh injury, then who knows after that.

McDonald, Anthony: At the start of the year he played well, but an injury and a continual drop in form has seen his position at the club come under scrutiny. Can provide good run and has a penetrating left foot kick, but is getting old and may well be past his best footy.

Response:Gotta go! The guy is one of teh worst kicks on our list - again, makes poor decisons under pressure - I think he'll be on his way out v soon

Nicholson, Alistair: The bearded one was arguably the form full back of the league before injuring his knee against the Pies. Again, he is only very young and we hope to have him back early, to mid season to once again take on all comers with his big beard! Such a disappointment to lose him mid-season.

Response:Again, another band-aid solution - not athletic enough to cover the most damaging forwards in the league - i still cant for the life of me figure out why he put Nicho on James Hird in the 200 GF - what was he thinking - the Dees need to trade to get better, not rely on this fella.

Response: I notice you get on Robbo a fair bit whic I think is unfair - yeah he's inconsistent, but he can also turn a game by himself - Neita went quiet for about 6 weeks this season and until this year has failed to bring teh consistency reuired - Robbo, if anything typifies why teh Dees are fun to watch.

ok well im not gonna do all the players cos i agree with some of what adam said. but here r a few that stand out (4 different reasons)

Neita - arguably best season to date. although did have a quite period there for a couple of weeks, but really stood up for us when it mattered (game against brisbane springs to mind) definite AA and of course coleman medallist.

Bruce - had some tough asks this year but has handled them so well....could be considered for AA as he is on the squad of 40.

Robbo - very spasmodic this year and at one stage it looked like he was destined for a loooooooooong stint with Sandy. picked up a bit but relies too much on taking a big speccy. and therefore his game can get too one dimensional. still on tenderhooks IMO

Ooze - another solid season, but apparently to rumours (strong rumours) we r gonna lost him to the pies. hope and pray to God that he doesnt leave us.

Bizzell - along with Vardy, a recruit that has been somewhat of a god send to us. his role in defence has been fantastic this year.

Vardy - again his foward play is somewhat rare and his crumbing in front of goals is something that made him so lethal at the crows. i was surprised when we picked him up at the beginning of the year and although sceptical im glad we got him now. maybe robbo could learn some things off him. injuries didnt help his cause tho

Nicholson - fantastic until he went down. his absence has really hurt us. ditto for Ellis.

IMO players to go
Clark
Funcke
Williams
A Mac (maybe)

Re: Robbo.

No, your wrong. He typifies why the Dees are FRUSTRATING to watch. Rarely turns games and when he does, he leaves it to the last minute. I would like to see him concentrate on winning the ball rather than trying to take mark of the year every week - he only tends to take one a year anyway.

And with Nicho and Ellis - again, I don't know how you have been watching us play, but Nicho was sensational for us. Did the jobs required superbly and beat Tredrea hands down, while also beating others. Ellis has been good, sure he can do silly things, but gave us some good run off half back.

He can only take Mark of the Year once a year. Hmm... I wonder why that would be! :D :p

Nah mate, what I meant was that he only holds the marks once a year that he goes for so often.
