Swans have proven time and time again that they do not let a player they rate and want to keep leave easily and players end up staying. Very good young team that will only get better and with his brother at the club Chad will be extremely hard to extract from the Swans

Warner won’t extend his contract at Sydney and will finish up next year. I can’t see Warner asking for a trade at the end of this season unless Sydney wins the premiership. TBH I can’t see any team knocking them off this year. Absolutely flying.

It's fine, Warner's already spoken glowingly of Pyke in the past and caught up with him for golf over the off season.

With half of Freo's salary cap tied up in rucks, WCE will be able to offer significantly more money to The Chad, as well as picks to satisfy Sydney.
I have really strong mail that if he comes home, it will be to Freo unfortunately.

My mail was that he would not commit to the swans beyond his current contract and that he was looking for a long term deal back in Perth with no preference on either WA club.

Don’t doubt your mail Tugga27 and it’s refreshing to hear. Family decision to return to WA, but hey, Sydney don’t lose many will ring out for the next 18 months. 😏

You make a sound argument for why academies were introduced

Have the Swans and Lions been successfully attracting multi1ple quality trades and free agents?

Yes they have.

Lions landing quality father sons as well.

And what players have left lately? Cannot think of a single one.

So three reasons why academies were introduced no longer seem to validate the need for prority access any longer. Especially when the clubs are making top 4 and playing in grand finals recently.

Amazing how actual reality doesnt stack up to the smoke and mirrors reasoning for having gun lists supported by academies when struggling rebuilding clubs get nothing.

Meanwhile WA clubs find it quite difficult to attract quality non West Australian talent. Many WA guns actually ask to be traded to Melbourne clubs instead. And can only access academy talent after pick 40.

Less than the current average?

I call BS on that.

Didnt he re-sign after playing in that losing GF where Warner was the Swans best player......by a long way?

If he's only on $350k he should sack his manager.

His extension announcement was in August of 2022.
The Geelong/Sydney grand final was September 2022.

So yes, I believe he is being paid closer to $350k a season than the $700k mentioned.

Well he should sack his manager if true.

And $2million front loaded offer will be pretty hard to knock back if he is getting paid peanuts. And the Swans wont be matching that with all the talent they need to pay fair wages to.

God I hate when you make sense.

Academies should only be there to bridge the gap between old clubs with f/s access and new clubs without that.

Once you start getting f/s in the first round? Academy access in the first round is lost.

This is definitely not the case. What do you think Caleb Serong was earning last year? In the 4th year of his career at Fremantle?
He signed that extension in 2020. Granted he was after winning the rising star, but he was earning $770k or so according to the herald sun top 100 players in the game last season. Mark Duffield at the time reported he signed an extension for year 3 and 4 at around $500k per annum.
However once it became clear at the end of year 2 that he was a top 3 player on the list already, that would have been bumped up significantly to around $750k for probably year 3 of his career and definitely year 4.

The point is when a player rapidly starts to emerge as a gun in their third or 4th year, there is a provision in an earlier signed contract to push him up to be paid at the level he is operation at pretty quickly. This happens all the time across the league.

Nick Daicos signed a 4 year deal to join the pies the day he was drafted. You hardly think he still running around this year earning $130k plus match payment though? Of course not, but he’s on a million bucks a season now and rightly so as a top 5 player in the game.
Warner was arguably in the Swans best 3 players in 202/22. He’s not still out there in 2024 earning the same salary as Lewis Melican and Sam wicks.

Ask yourself what Caleb Serong's career would look like playing a season less of football. That's Chad Warner. First round draft picks extend their contracts on roughly 350-400 a season initially - that is what I expect Serong was on. Not a guy drafted in the 30s who wasn't a regular yet.

They are not comparable because Serong had a prime role in the side basically full time from the start of his first season, Chad had to work his way in and only stepped up into the player he is now after, or you could argue about the time, that he signed an extension last.

Sydney are getting great value out of him. That's why he gave the money signal when he kicked a goal a month ago, it's why this is about money now.

Neale was getting paid way unders at Freo. Sacked his manager and moved to Brisbane. Some blame has to be put on the players for signing it at the end of the day
