Preview Changes and Preview Thread for Round 4, 2026 vs Richmond @ MCG

We have players that should be dropped, but no one playing better to replace them.

Maybe some injured players will return.

Why are Port's skills so poor?
Why do Port take the foot off the pedal after 1/4 time?
How do we turn this around with the current list as quickly as possible?

This isn’t alarm bells for Carr. Despite more than a handful lousy performances I think we’ll see 3 changes.

Esava - Todd
Mead - Bergman
Mackinlay - whoever Carr wants to get a look at

Our midfield has fell away extremely quickly. Drew has been very poor for 2 years now. Watkins is pretty much a full time midfielder for us and at AFL level I dont think hes a long term viable option. When Butters goes it becomes very thin.
If Butters goes, we are dead in the water.

Two years ago we had AA Rozee, AA Butters, up and coming Hornet and things were looking awesome. Wines and Drew at the back of the rotation.

So who goes out for Zadow?
Durdin 2 goals a game is staying
DBJ 15 possessions 9 Score Involvements a goal and a couple of forward 50 tackles and one that should have been paid that would have resulted in a goal.
Berry very poor today but do we learn anything by playing him in the SANFL.
Richards is the pick of the 4 small forwards. So not sure who goes, maybe MacKinlay and push Richards up to the wing. I would actually get Richards and Luko to share a wing and tell Wehr to play the defensive wingman. Does have a moving of the deck chairs feeling though.
Berry I give one more chance.
If Cochrane comes in next week for the magpies and plays well Berry is in strife

I think Farrell should play on the wing and replace Wehr. At least Farrell does something with his kicks unlike Wehr.

Move Burgoyne down half-back. He is far more defensively accountable than Farrell.

Lukosius replaces Mackinlay on the wing.
Dont mind this at all. Also I remember during Pre-Season Coach Carr espousing the virtues of each player has to be able to adapt and offer more than just one position. The indictment is that if a 40yo Boaky was still on the list he would probably be a better option than the 2 wingers, MacKinlay and Wehr that we used yesterday.

Does it really matter? We’re clearly in a full rebuild — regardless of how much the club tries to sugar-coat it or spin it to the public.

The reality is we’ve got a number of players who simply aren’t up to AFL standard: Brodie, Wehr, McKinlay, Jason Burgoyne, Joe Berry, Jackson Mead, Jack Lukosius, Jordan Sweet, Logan Evans.

At some point the club needs to draw a line in the sand. Be honest about where we’re at, decide who’s genuinely worth investing in, and commit to a clear direction moving forward.

There are some positives — guys like Douggie Cochrane, Zemes Pilot and Surjan Jr are coming through. But let’s not kid ourselves either. Zak Butters isn’t naive — he knows this list isn’t contending anytime soon. If he goes, he’ll command top dollar, and we should be pushing hard to extract maximum value — ideally multiple first-round picks (and not repeat past mistakes).

If we nail those picks, there’s real upside. That’s how you reset properly. And clubs like St Kilda aren’t miles ahead of us — despite the media hype around their “spending spree” (which is largely noise given the salary cap).

This doesn’t need to drag out into an 8-year rebuild like Adelaide. If it’s done properly, it’s a 2–3 year turnaround.

But that requires tough calls — which, realistically, probably won’t happen.

If it were up to me:

Out: Brodie, Wehr, McKinlay, Jason Burgoyne, Jackson Mead, Jack Lukosius, Jordan Sweet, Logan Evans
(Joe Berry stays for now, but he hasn’t shown enough)

In: Moraes, Wines, Tom Cochrane, Tom Anastasopoulos, Lorenz, Zadow, Barrett — and more of the younger guys on the list (Ramm when fit)

Will it happen? No.

But it should.

Who cares if we lose by 10 goals for a season or two? If you’re rebuilding, commit to it properly. The lower we finish, the better the draft hand — and the faster we get back to being competitive - AND just hope that teh flogs from West Lakes don't somehow sneak a flag in the mean-time.

I'm starting to think Toddy Marshall should be thrown back up forward if he's confident with his body and head knocks now. He says he is and that doesn't affect him as much now. Put Luko either back or wing like others mentioned.. doubt this shit will be talked about or done though. But the forward line needs 1 of Georgiades, 1 of Whitlock and 1 of Marshall type forwards. Luko doesn't seem to fit regardless of how good his kicking might be, he's just not fitting with how he wants to perform and play, especially in how the game IS played now days.

Farrell wing is probably not a bad option, it's been floated before and probably tried before but he isn't doing as much as what a half back flanker and run on player should be doing.. he's no Josh Daicos or Nick Daicos when he was half back. Only player like that is Rozee and he's gone for awhile.. Jones could be but F me he just bloody doesn't commit.. it's like he just doesn't want to even play or take it seriously and that type of person and player should just be side lined for good or until they want to play the damn game.

might be the making of the club, use the draft picks wisely and we could mount a charge by 2028/29.

we desperately need to draft well and we need to trade in the correct free agents.

Agree we need to get rid of those who we know won't be part of future success. But who cares if the Crows grab a flag in the next year or too. Let's concentrate on us for a change and not worry about them. If they are good enough to win one ahead of Gold Coast, Hawthorn or the bulldogs in the next couple of years good luck to them because those 3 clubs I think have equal if not better lists than adelaide and certainly better head coaches than Adelaide's current one

Just on the 2-3 year turnaround... in 2 years Zemes Pilot will be a lanky 18 year old. He is extremely unlikely to have a serious impact until he is 22 or 23, that's 6 or 7 years away.

If we're serious about these incoming draftees I just don't see how its not a longer rebuild, even if we do everything right.

With the tiggers terrible form, a loss to them would have a similar feel as gifting the suns their first win 🥴

They’re missing their two best players too.

Beyond bleak.

because in 2-3 years, Whitlock and Ramm should be out KPP - and the others who I am hoping have as much talent as what is being discussed, become Ramm and Whitlocks (Mitchs) understudies to hopefully accelerate their development.

with the other 3 first rounders from the butters trade, hopefully we jag an already made player, simillar to a Lalor, Jagga or Duursma, W. type, Yes I know no 1 picks and whatnot, but surely there are some gold players in the top 10 we can unlock who might eb ready made. its now or never though wiht Tassy coming in.
