Changes for RD 2

I'm reading this thread purely for DT purposes, but there's something I've gotta ask.

Why is Toovey played up the ground? He was a fullback for WA in both years of U18's. He played at fullback in the WAFL GF the year he was drafted and looked really good. He was never moved off the last line. I know he's a bit undersized, but he could surely still fit into the defensive unit.

Has he been unsuccessful in the VFL in this position, is there no room for him, is he showing better form as a tagger or spare parts man?

You've seen him play, would you seriously want him one out on the last line of defence against a Brown/Franklin etc? I think he'd be to undersized as an AFL FB anyways, he'd get monstered.

MM has this desperate desire to craft him into something he isn't, I gather he just likes his endeavour and hunger so he plays him up the ground a bit. I think he has failed to notice the bloke can't actually kick the ball, which regardless of how hard you try, is essentially a pretty vital skill to have in this game.

@Barnzy - You only have to look through this thread to see we all think Beams should play, but whether Mick picks him is a completely different thing. Everyone here thought he would be selected to play round one, but you can never underestimate Micks longing to play the likes of Johnson and Toovey.
I would think he is nearly a certainty this week to take Johnson's spot, but you can never be sure until Thursday night I guess.

if I was picking a team:

Out: Toovey, Johnson, Bryan
In: Shaw, Beams and Wood.

Although we came within four points of the crows, it is clear to me (not sure why is isn't clear to mick) that we did not have our best 22 out on the park. Wood, Beams and sidebottom all deserve a game above toovey, johnson and bryan. But if shaw is fit, he is straight in in front of sidebottom. It amazes me how johnson and toovey cannot kick a football and we should be developing our youngsters like beams sidebottom and j-mac instead of playing these duds that are well past their time. We do have a good crop of youngsters and i feel our premiership window is one-two years away, so why are we not playing our kids?

You're spot on. He's got some serious talent as a stopper, but his offensive game is shit-house.

I like him more than most, but having said that, we can't have Toovey, Goldsack, Presti and Brown all in the same team, all not giving us any drive whatsoever. Two of those at any time is the most I'd want to see.

Toovey Out
Beams In

Or Shaw if fit.

Unless im watching a different game i dont know how toovey keeps getting a game, poor skills, its like watching under 12's he chase the ball round in circles and he gets in the way. At least beams looks like he knows where to go and what to do.

Alan Toovey is the worst footballer to watch, it gets me frustrated. Mick Malthouse if you are reading this :P The guy might have a good worth ethic but he just isn't good enough to play at this level. Throw in a beams/sidebottom/macarthy instead.

Rusty u wer talkn bout the best 22
lets see who has the best 22.
MInes

B-Heath(heata)Shaw, Simon (blanket) Prestigiacomo, Harry(OOOO'brien)
HB- Marty(irish)Clarke, Nathan Brown, Nick(courage) Maxwell
C- Tarkyn Lockyer, Scott(Pendles) Pendlebury, Dale(daisy)Thomas
HF- Alan Didak, Travis Cloke, Leon(the ignitor) Davis
F- John(call me jack)Anthony, Anthony(PEBS) Rocca, Paul Medhurst.
Rucks- Josh Fraser, Dane Swan, Shane (OBee) O'bree
Inter- Dayne Beams, Cam Wood, Sean Rusling, Tyson Goldsack

Compare and post ya thourghts guys.

In a perfect world, where all players are playing to their peak, then I agree with your best 22, PIES_09. Goldsack, Cox and Toovey would all be on the same level for me and would contest for that same spot until one of them proved to be the out-and-out best.

P.S. Shane (Obi-Wan) O'Bree? Or even Shane (Cheesy) O'Bree? Also, Dayne (Laser) Beams and Tyson (Moneybags) Goldsack and Harry (The Brazilian Anaconda) O'Brien AND (Neon) Leon (Mag) Davis.

So many nicknames.

Neon Leon 'the igniter' Davis
Marty 'to be sure' Clarke :P

also agree with your point on goldsack, cox and toovey. I believe cox is in front because he gives us run and drive out of the back line. However, not entirely sure about he's defensive skills.

My team...

Shaw Presti O'Brien

Clarke Brown Maxwell

Davis Pendlebury Thomas

Didak Cloke Lockyer

Medhurst Rocca Anthony

Fraser Swan O'Bree

Johnson Wood Beams Cox

In... Rocca Wood Beams Shaw

Out... Toovey (never again Mick) Goldsack Bryan Reid :thumbsu:

In: Beams, Rocca, Shaw, Steele
Out: Johnson, Goldsack, Reid, Toovey

Johnson shouldn't get another game this season, he's past it. If he's had his best ever pre-season, is fitter than he's ever been and thats what he serves up we need to look past him at the likes of wellers, beams, steele, stanners, mccarthy, cook et al. He's gone.

....Side note. We only looked dangerous on the weekend when Thomas was at the centre bounces and the one-twos and pass to didak on the mcc wing were simply sensational. First time I've ever thought he's shown huge ability as an inside mid. Really good sign, we need him in there long-term.

Can anyone remind me of Melbourne's KP forwards?

Are both Brown and Presti required?

What does everyone think of having Nathan Brown at FF?

once toovey is dropped, he should not make an appearance again as he is a liability, that's all that i hope. Beams has shown more potential in a few practice games than toovey has probably since his first game.

Spot on. I wouldn't call it being an "inside mid", he's far more outside but can win the ball too. But I'm really excited about Thomas at the moment. It wasn't his best game, but boy did he show some great signs. Our midfield looks fabulous when both Thomas and Pendlebury were in there. I hope Mick noticed this... :o

I'm new to all this but i think depending on our mental state it could become a danger game for us. we've done it in the past but i have hope that our new breed of magpies are able to fight off the "easy game" mentality and actually turn up ready to play on saturday and ready for a fight for the points.

If we turn up thinking it's going to happen we may be in for a shock.

I know 5 changes are alot but it's what i'd do.

Changes i'd make are:
Out: Johnson, Reid, Prestigiacomo, Goldsack and Toovey
In: Sidebottom, Beams, Stanley, Shaw and Rocca

Outs: Johnson - Just turns it over and decision making is poor, needs to get some run in his legs aswell as seems to have stagnated abit since injuries last year, unfortunately looks like the kids and the game in general may be about to go past Benny and there's nothing he can do about it. I could be wrong, but he looks stuck in a rut. The game has gotten to the point that we need precise, pin point kicks and benny isn't one of those.

Toovey - Much the same as Johnson in terms of the skills. The fact that he can be used by MM as a run-with player could keep him in, but the question remains do we run with the demons or blow them away with our own runners? If we choose the latter then Toovey is out.

Reid - Needs gametime and needs to find out whether he's a forward, a mid or a back. I suggest we let him figure that out in the two's for the time being at least. Then when he can show to coaching staff that he can fit in at AFL level then he should be in. I agree with other posters that he needs gametime, but with Rocca back in I suggest Reid is out.

Prestigiacomo - I love Presti and i'm already fearing some backlash here, but hear me out on this one. Look at Melbourne's forward setup and there doesn't appear to be a matchup for him. With Geelong the following week and given Presti's age and fragile body (reg:2008) i say we give him a week off.

Goldsack - He tries hard, but no other reason other than Heath Shaw is back and can't fit him in.

Ins: Rocca - 6 goals that he kicked was against a bunch of nobody's lets face it. But i was at the game and I was only interested to see how he was moving. He looks as good as Rocca always looks, if that makes sense. Sure he was blowing hard and gasping, but thats how we now he's working hard. The fact that after blowing hard he was still on the ground was the good sign. Get him in to really prove a handful for a young, small Melbourne defence. He's also what Travis needs around him right now. It'll be interesting to see if Anthony-Cloke-Rocca works, no better way to test it than against Melbourne in my opinion, sorry Dees!:)

Beams - the kid can play, we've seen him do it at NAB Cup level, let's let him loose on an equally young side in Melbourne. Throw him in the mix and give him a taste. He'll only improve our midfield rotations and will also let us keep Leon and Didak closer to goal for longer which we lacked on Saturday because they were required in their midfield rotaions.

Sidebottom - same as Beams, word for word.

Stanley - Was a toss up between him and McCarthy, but i've rewarded Stanley for good two's form. Also McCarthy might still be carrying something minor. In terms of midfield rotations same reasons as Beams and Sidebottom. But we want to find out what this kid can do. Test him against Melbourne. It's better than waiting till later in the year when it's more cut throat then bringing him in against a higher quality opposition and then saying "he's not upto it" lets actually see him in the middle.

Shaw - no brainer, he's fit.

So the lineup is:

Cox N.Brown O'Brien
Shaw Maxwell Clarke
Thomas Swan Lockyer
Didak Cloke Davis
Medhurst Rocca Anthony
Fraser Pendlebury Stanley

Beams, Bryan, Sidebottom and O'Bree

Eme: Wood, McCarthy, L.Brown

Major move - Maxwell to CHB, we saw him back, middle and forward last start, without Presti he needs to play on a man and beat him. He's the skipper now and we need that leadership from the back. With Rocca up forward he'll look after that part of the ground. We need Maxy to do what he does best voice, passion and hardness, make the Melbourne forwards fear getting a loose ball around him.

Need - Fraser to really stand up against Melbourne's rucks. Needs to get us off to a good start and also get fired up. Where's the passion and fire Josh, we want to see it. Start to really bully the young big blokes of the competition.

cheers guys and go pies!

Prediction: Pies by 52 points.

Rocca and Heath have to come in if fit.

Beams also needs to come in we need more run through the midfield.

Wood needs one more crack. Bryan is only a battler at best.

So for me it would be:

INS: Rocca Shaw Wood Beams

OUTS: Reid Johnson Bryan Goldsack/Toovey

would love to see McCarthy in also but sounds like he got injured.

Can anyone remind me of Melbourne's KP forwards?

Miller, johnson/jamar and bate

Brown to miller
Presti to johnson/jamar
harry to bate

Tooves will probably play this week. Mick loves him and will give him a couple of games to "settle in". I would have to say that Goldsack might be the unlucky one. Bryan could also make way for Wood but will it be this week? Reid looked pretty lost out there and will probably come out. And we all know about Johnno.

There are a few clouds around players though. Rocca? Hearter? Are they fit. You would have to probably say no to Rocca and I think Heater will be ok.

So I would say...
Out: Goldsack, Reid and Johnno
Ins: Heater, Beams, Stanners

We simply went into that game way to tall across half back. I think this evens the side out a bit with some good ball winning ability.

Nothing to do with taking them for granted. I'm thinking more for match ups.

I don't really think Presti and Brown are completely necessary in Melbourne's forwardline. IMO Harry is a perfect match up for Miller, and only Presti is really needed for your Johnsons and Jamars.

Harry is a better match up for bate

brown the strength and speed for miller

and presti has owned resting rucks before

brown can also go forward and harry onto davey/woneamirri/sylvia in that set up

Shaw or Toovey are perfect for Bate.

Miller is pretty mobile, more so than Brown, I reckon Harry would suit him more than Brown.

Presti - Jamar/Johnson
Harry - Miller
Shaw/Toovey - Bate

What about woneamirri, and davey?

for mine
presti one of the rucks

brown - miller, brown was playing a high chb all saturday and didnt look bad, miller is also a powerhouse who is mobile will be touch but miller is too big for harry

Harry Bate, perfect match up

Toovey davey/woneamirri

heath-davey/woneamirri

cox doing whatever, goldsack dropped for another mid
