I'm not heaping the blame on him entirely but Christ, the talent level isn't this bad. Do they look like a team playing with purpose to you?

They look like a team that doesn't know how to bat in difficult conditions; in terms of technique and approach.

Purpose and leadership come second.

How do we know Maxwell is not suited to Test cricket with the limited test matches he has played which is 3.Played all in India,Sri Lanka region on spin friendly wickets where all our batsman struggled and was mainly picked as a spin bowler. Also never played a test match in Australia.
Look past numbers and see whats happening. Pressure mounting on players because they are not digging in for an innings and feeling pressure to play attacking cricket. We need to bring in anyone ajd everyone whos calm patient and holds onto their wicket and keep then at 4. Maxwell plays like a baseballer. Its the same issue we have with Mmarsh. Voges. Ferguson bird ect.

Bit harsh on old Jackson.

I don't really care how well he bats to be honest

I like the side, except I can't see how Bancroft earns a spot. Only got past 50 3 times last season and has a top score of 22 this year.

I think Wade needs to come in. Yes his keeping is behind Neville's but we a desperate for someone like him in the middle order.

Maybe as a batsman as he does have grit with the bat. Then get him to bowl some overs. Remember him being quick sharp with the ball.

The team is crying out for a No 6 who can knuckle down and eschew the flashy shot. Maxwell just can't help himself.

Still think he is better than the alternative. He is also a genuine all rounder.

We can keep picking plodders who aren't world beaters, or we can roll the dice a bit and go with raw talent to join Smith, Koala and Warner. May as well.

What if he makes a couple of useful but unspectacular innings (ie a couple of 40s). Do you drop him then? Or do you keep him and deny the younger player a spot for a couple of more Tests? Obviously we don't want him to fail to resolve this problem...so why pick him? It's a Test Match for the Australian Cricket Team - I don't think that anyone should be selected just because it's a dead rubber so why bother picking a better team.

What younger player is hammering down the door? None.....absolutely none. So he wouldn't be keeping anyone out of the team. Voges and Burns should both be dropped so that's 2 spots already.

Ferguson wasn't hammering down the door. And in this Test he took a steaming dump on the door. There is nothing to be gained from picking him in Adelaide.

I think he's been averaging around 50+ for the past 3 seasons. What more would you want him to do? That's better than most others at Shield level.

2014-15 season: 836 runs @ 52.25
2015-16: 478 runs @ 53.11
2016-17*: 101 runs at 50.50

I don't know, what else is he meant to do? He's been very good in the Shield.

IN: Shaun Marsh, Peter Siddle (only coz Cummins and Pattinson are injured), and two other top performing Sheffield Shield batsmen
OUT: Joe Burns, Adam Voges, Callum Ferguson, Joe Mennie
Ideal XI if everyone was fit
1. David Warner
2. Shaun Marsh
3. Usman Khawaja
4. Steve Smith
5. ??
6. ??
7. Peter Nevill
8. Mitchell Starc
9. Pat Cummins
10. Josh Hazlewood
11. Nathan Lyon

12th- James Pattinson
13th- Peter Siddle

I see Cameron Bancroft as a long term replacement for Shaun Marsh. I also think 5 and 6 should be out of Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Jake Lehmann, Kurtis Patterson, Nic Maddinson, Moises Henriques, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell. And then if it were for Nevill to get dropped i would bring in Wade and if Nathan Lyon was to go i reckon Agar would be a decent option.

I imagine that the West Indies version of Big Footy has been melting like this for the past 20 years.

Can't believe Jake Lehmann name is getting thrown up for selection, Good Gravy!! it just seems to be that the people commenting on cricket are doing random player searches on ESPN Cricinfo and coming up with names to fill a hole. Sure bring Lehmann let him be destroyed at test level and completely wreck him as a cricketer. Siddons, Cox, Klinger never wore the baggy green despite their records, yet now we're just looking at giving it to blokes after less than 2 years of FC cricket.

It's also no point commentators complaining about pitches being roads when they were silent when Waugh, Ponting & others regularly complained about pitches suiting bowlers not batters, that's where the problems began.

The summer has four tests and I say have a squad of 15 and stick to it. It's worth noting that when England was woeful it was not helped by constantly rotating the side!!

What would you consider top performing? Jake Lehman because he is averaging 158 this season so far? Marcus Harris averaging 80+? or even Bailey is averaging 80+.

i have just edited my post, so probably the players who out of them can show that they can stay at the crease and make runs should be in the side.

Even you said that he shouldn't have been in the team. Now he's made 3 & 1 and been embarrassing dismissed both times, you think he should get picked again? Are you South African?

Yep, I said I wouldn't have picked him; but the Aus selectors did. Given he is in the side might as well given him a few to see what he can offer. Who would you pick over him that has as good, or a better record, over the past 3 seasons?

Your dropping Ferguson after 1 Test. He got run out in one of the innings from a direct hit. Every other batsmen in the side has had numerous chances surely he gets at least one more test. Also he doesn't have the luxary of playing the West Indies or New Zealand on debut. He copped the best bowling attack in the world on a seaming wicket.

Amir-Wahab-*third seamer*-Yasir will be a huge Test for us too, but expect flat decks to be prepared to negate their influence.

What did Hussey average in first class cricket before he was selected. Getting selected averaging under 40 is ludicrous.
Irrelevant. What the most important is the average for the last two to three seasons, which if I'm not mistaken is above 50 for Ferguson.
Give him another crack as there are more urgent areas to fix first.

He averages a tad under 40 unless it's miraculously improved. He's an average batsman with too many flaws.
He's averaging 50+ for 4 consecutive domestic seasons now.

I'd be surprised if more than 2 or 3 other batsman in the country have currently got more than 2 seasons in a row averaging 50+.

It would be stupid and hypocritical to drop Ferguson. He is basically the best batsman we have at domestic level. On the available information we have, it's not likely any other batsman would outperform him. Sure if you don't give a fk about winning Tests in the short to medium term, load up on youth. If you actually want to win some games, you can't drop a bloke that's done everything right to earn his spot on performances (rather than potential).
