Thoughts on the following side (taking into account that Warner, Smith, Starc and Hazelwood are the only safe ones)?
1. David Warner
2. Matthew Renshaw (or Shaun Marsh if fit, though I question Marsh's consistency)
3. Usman Khawaja
4. Steven Smith (c)
5. Peter Handscomb (scored 215 against NSW, can't do much more than that)
6. Sam Whiteman (wk) (Nevill simply isn't making enough runs, otherwise maybe Chris Hartley?)
7. Ashton Agar (if fit, otherwise Stephen O'Keefe)
8. Mitchell Starc
9. Josh Hazelwood
10. Jackson Bird (how the hell did Joe Mennie get a Test gig ahead of Bird?)
11. Chadd Sayers (leading wicket-taker in Sheffield Shield I think for '16/'17 so far, otherwise maybe Behrendorff?)

We don't need five bowlers, or four specialist quicks. Agar is a decent batsman for a bowler, but he's not an all-rounder at test level, so he'd need to be picked as part of our four bowlers.

I'd swap out Sayers or Bird for a middle order batsman like Patterson

Sam Whiteman is equal to Nevill at best, no where near good enough to bat at no. 6
Agar is neither good enough as a bowler, or as a batsmen yet to Play for Australia and has no consistency. Plus, Injured.

The rest of the team works.

The current shield scores are pretty damning.

Code:
Warner - 11 & 20
Burns - 4 & 2
Kawaja - 106 & 17
Smith - 8 & YTB
Ferguson - 4 & 4
Voges - 16 ret hurt
Neville - 26 & YTB
Mennie - DNP
Starc - DNP
Hazlewood - DNP
Lyon - 5 & YTB

1st Inn - 7/180 2nd Inn - 4/43
Lyon is 0/170+ for the test when bowling as well.

I really like this but there would be a lot of pressure on the top 5, at least initially. Maybe at times you could drop a quick for an extra bat if required or for O'Keefe if 2 spinners are needed, but I think this is a solid base.

I think Usman should be safe and told as such too. The vast majority of his time in the side he has been on eggshells about his spot.

Possible squad Steven Smith (capt), Matt Renshaw, David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Kurtis Patterson, Peter Handscomb, Matthew Wade (wk), Steve O'Keefe, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird, Daniel Worrall/Chadd Sayers.
Good Lord cricinfo...

Tbf it looks good apart from that.

Wade
Renshaw
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
White
Agar
Starc
Hazelwood
Bird : Needs to improve batting
Sayers 12th Man

It's funny seeing different journos and different media outlets all trying to claim they have the inside knowledge.

Depending on who you read, there'll be only minor change or a drastic overhaul. Nevill will be kept or Wade is a certainty. Lyon is safe or already dropped.....

Seriously, in this thread we really need to ignore the clearly ridiculous sides suggested. If someone names Wade to open a Test, just skim on by

Just my 2p as an Englishman. I think the selectors have to figure out whether they want to give themselves the best possible chance of a morale-boosting victory; to make a final judgement on some under-performing players; or to have a look at some new lads. If it's the first or second then I'd say the changes will be kept to a minimum: Voges and Burns out, Handscomb (I've not seen any of your domestic cricket but he seems a unanimous choice) plus Shaun Marsh (if fit) or the next cab off the rank. If they go the third option then Ferguson, Nevill, Mennie and Lyon could go too. But I'd be amazed if under any circumstance they made more than 4 changes. That almost never works and just spreads panic. If you read about those England sides of the 90s, the selection process was so erratic they all ended up playing to keep their own place rather than giving it all for the team. One other thing is that you need to decide if you want a keeper-batsman or a batsman-keeper; you definitely have the first at the moment but most international sides go for the latter. Seems to me your top order is so fragile that it needs support, which points to Wade; however, if your new batsmen fire then there's a case for retaining Nevill. With only a small number of first-class sides in Shield cricket, it means you only have a handful keepers you have to pick from. In theory, we have at least 18.

Nice to be reminded of Doherty and Beer. I can't think of two more ineffectual players and that's coming from someone who endured Derek Pringle and David Capel.
First bit of this is very important point: the selectors need to make a clear decision about the direction they are taking and stick with it for the rest of the summer. Not necessarily the players selected, but the selection policy. And I am not sure they will, unfortunately.

Ferguson out cheaply again last night, surely this guy doesn't play he's clearly not up to it
Agree. 31yo out of form against a Patterson, Handscomb or Renshaw you've gotta go the youth. Nobody is owed anything, it's professional sport. Harsh but it's the right call going forward

They average more than him. They should be ahead.

But not only younger and in better form
