I feel disconnected from a lot of the opinions that have been thrown about post match.

First it’s Larkey v Murphy. Larkey kicked 3.1 of his 5.2 in the last when we’d well and truly put the cue in the rack so there was no pressure on the ball carrier. Any criticism of Markov I just do not get? That was perhaps his best performance to date with his ball handling and use tight. He’s just about a football lesson for me in what having faith in someone can do (Carlton and McKay take note). Squad rotation, which I’m a fan of, was put to bed by McRae in his presser, but it continues to pop up. The guys underneath aren’t getting senior minutes while we’re “healthy” and winning because McRae wants to get better with what we already have.

Ultimately some of them just aren’t going to make it. For me I look at the decision to bring Kelly in for a two week stretch earlier in the year to play off a wing which was one of the more absurd decisions this coaching group has made (alongside Chugg’s debut and T Brown > McReery v Carlton). If he’s getting senior minutes something’s missing in the games of others alongside him.
Agree with you on Kelly, but gee he played a good last quarter on Anzac day.

I like to think of myself more as The Equaliser…….

I prefer Denzel over Brad. Pitt is just too pretty for my liking.

Edward Woodward was the original, and still best, Equaliser.

That’s correct, unlike the 360 graphic, but I’d have thought we’d start the run v Fremantle last year? That would have us at 23-4.

Right! The 360 thing necessarily had to exclude finals for it to be a ladder - selective stat but an attention grabber.

He was atrocious today. Gave away too many free kicks.
Bianca is just a VFL level footballer. Top flight footy is way too fast for him. No point wasting a list spot on him after this year or denying games to someone with potential like Macrae or Allan

He good enough to play a roll, he won’t move the dial, the other two mentioned might.

Agree with the Larkey comments. Part of it was the fact that Goldstein was dominating us in the ruck and so north's stoppage game was elite (Fly mentioned it himself in the presser). I like Markov too. He'll never be an A-grader but he's an excellent role player, and you need about 7-9 of them in any great team.

I didn't have a problem with the decision to bring in Kelly. He HAS been a bitter disappointment it's true, but he played some decent but sporadic footy in those games. I firmly believe we need to expose our fringe players -- even if the football department disagrees with me -- in the short term. The decision not to do so tells me that we're focusing in 100% on the premiership, but it's as risk because it doesn't take into account potential injuries. I don't want to see Macrae or Carmichael or Bianco coming in for a prelim because we've got injuries and it's their first senior game for the year. Like all decisions, it's a matter of risk.

Gotcha I thought it might be a 12 month cycle. AFL media loves an attention grabbing stat!

From memory it was something about them challenging us at stoppage like few else have this year?

My theory on it is that less knowledgeable posters looked at North’s record on the season and just expected a smacking. They should have beaten Sydney, they would have beaten WC, Carlton, St Kilda and probably Geelong this week. That’s without LDU…

They’re a different team without Clarko at the helm and my two cents is if he comes back it should be as an assistant/ advisor.

Cohesion and connection improves the more players play together. I don't think you sacrifice the advantage of having a settled team in order to give some depth role players a few games in June and July in order for them to be slightly better prepared if injuries hit to a suitable role at a very specific time of the season. If injuries hit earlier, they get the preparation anyway.

Why is it that where ever I see a post from you, it’s always in the guise as a fluffer. Do you feel better in numbers.

How about putting up an original thought. Place those little matzo balls on the table.

I like it when you play the victim little Ronnie. It turns me on.

It looks good on you.

I suspect we were testing out Murphy for that kind of role to see whether we need to add Frampton.
Quite possible, sr36, but why would we not want to add Frampton? Do you not think he is best 22?

Fly specifically mentioned they tried some things, some worked, some didn't. I'd imagine Murphy to Larkey was one of those things tried, which didn't work.

It doesn't mean there is no role for Frampton, just that they wanted to see how Murphy stood up to an in form forward if he was ever required to do so.

I meant more in terms of our structure - do we need that extra tall defender or can Murphy handle big guys. Bringing in an extra tall defender does come at a cost in other areas - probably the closing speed and run of Markov. I think Frampton is best 22 - Even if not for defence, I'd pick him over DC for ruck at the moment.

We were at one with that thought.

Ed Allan VFL player of the week, which to me suggests he’s in for Sidey.

Always excited to see young players given their first game.

I wouldn’t mind Fin getting a game as well.

Not necessarily. The game before this one Carmy was player of the week and didn’t even get on the emg list.

I think Edward will be picked.
Dunno if he's grown a little this year. Looked pretty tall around the other players. Still only 18 years of age.

Carmichael would need one of Adams or Mitchell to come out for him to come in as he plays the inside/half forward spot that Adams is playing. Allan is the best like for like swap for Sidebottom and also has a much bigger upside potential wise. It may be a blessing in disguise to have Sidebottom out for a few weeks to see what Allan can bring to the table.

My criticism personally of Murphy and Markov is solely based on who we take out if we're going to bring in Frampton.

On one hand you have Murphy who had a down day. You can't deny this, I don't care that some of Larkey's goals were junk time, he could've easily kicked a 6th or 7th. But as I suggested in the OP, he's got plenty of credits in the bank and therefore he's absolutely safe.

On the other hand you're hardly dropping a rebounding/small def like Noble or Quaynor, so the only real other option is Markov... unless we play an extra defender off the bench?

Markov is in our best 23 right now. Key words however are "right now" - once Lipinski, McStay and Howe are ready, something has to give. Frampton's availability is just the start of the selection squeeze (notwithstanding injuries of course!)

Edit - wouldn't be opposed to Nick Daicos playing mid/fwd this week to cater for Frampton to come in. Depending if we want to play Moore/Murphy/Frampton/Markov/Noble/Quaynor/Maynard as our back 7.

Just turned 19 which makes him slightly older than the mean first year player. Would be very very unlikely for him to have done any growing this year. A road travelled down many times on this board.

The function of any team defense in the modern game is directly impacted by the ability of those up the field to limit the ball users effectiveness. Prime Jakovic would have struggled v Larkey with the way it came in in Q4.

There’s been a theme of questioning the quality of Markov’s performance rather than the suggestion of him being the unlucky last man in. I understand the latter, but not the former. The coaching group threw the magnets around after Steele went off with all of Hill, WHE and Elliott spending time on the wing. I can definitely see a scenario where say Noble plays further afield in place of Steele and Frampton slots into defence.
