Changes make us a better balanced side albeit a younger, less experienced one

Brander whilst still a tall gives us more mobility and versatility than Vardy and whilst it’s a forced change Venables in for redden gives us another crumbing forward at the expense of a midfield rotation which we weren’t using effectively

He was originally named on the extended bench, then put on the field in Redden’s spot when Redden came out.

Players don’t have to play where they’re named on the Thursday or Friday. Contrary to the belief on Facebook where people think Schofield will be playing on Rohan and Jetta on Hawkins
I know but it still looks odd.

Vardy another victim of the 3 tall forward policy we are running with.

It would be interesting to see the midfield combinations each Ruckman is working with. The bloke tapping to Gaff, Cripps, Darling and Jetta is going to have a much harder time of it than the bloke rucking to Shue, Yeo, Redden and Sheed.

Ah well. Hopefully Dolph can take his frustrations out on Claremont and find some touch.

Given that Vardy has been starting ruck every game this year I reckon he wouldve had the premo mid combo more often than Hickey. The difference in the middle between them has been hugely noticable to me, those stats are the first I've seen that back up what I've thought I've been seeing though.

I think Hickey's ruck work has been far above Vardy's before you even start looking at his clearance efforts. I hope Vardy finds form, the 2 ruck policy isn't a bad one until you're carrying one of them in the team as we have been.

Why would you want our major ball winner in Gaff play Matson’s low production role
Just Palin stupid
sigh, not stupid if you think a little.. obviously the idea is gaff does a lot better in masten roles then old man masten does. Gaff is a natural winger, he will find the ball....

oh and fyi, we just won a premiership without our most prolific ball winner racking them up. Fact is the current structure with gaff playing inside is not benefitting us.

Thing is with Masten, RE: his running power

If you are going to be a true outside gut runner (which is Mastens role), you have to:

1) be a significant accumulator of the ball. Let me just restate that: you have to be a significant accumulator of the ball.
2) really hurt teams with the amount of ball you get on the outside, and the quality of your disposal
3) occasionally hit the scoreboard
4) apply genuine defensive pressure in terms of tackles (not arm waving)

For mine, guys like Gaff, Lachie Whitfield, Tom Scully (when healthy), and Mark Blicavs are all prime examples of what a true, outside, but running midfielder looks like.

Masten, who averages about 13 touches against a good team, rarely tackles, rarely hits the scoreboard and is good for at least a couple of squib kicks per game.

This is not what someone playing his role is meant to look like (at least, not someone decent anyway)

If he is in the team for his supposed running power alone (which it seems he is), then he is getting nowhere near enough ball to fulfill his role, and applying absolutely nowhere near enough defensive pressure either.

Combine that with very little (if any) scoreboard impact and we have a real problem.

Not that any of this is anything new.

Each to their own, but if running is where he excels I am sure he would be a great fit at a little aths club somewhere in Perth. Lots of running and very little physical contact would be a perfect for Chris, it's effectively what he is doing atm anyway.

Why are we going so tall again.

Surely we would have learnt to drop Vardy for a runner. Yet we bring in Brander?

Agree O Allen could have a spell in the WAFL. Hasn’t been great the last few weeks, not entirely his fault as the delivery has been puss and lacking in quantity as well. But last year worked well with only JK & JD as the talls and the rest smalls. In a narrow ground reckon that would work better. Forward line of JK, JD, Cripps, Ryan, Petch and Venables could work, with Gaff on the wing, Sheed inside, and Masten the one to go out. I don’t hate Masten but he’s the likely one to go out in order to put Gaff on the wing
Out
Vardy
Masten
O Allen
In
Williams- can play forward/ruck - give the Wells/Cats a look of what could've with last years trade.
M Allen - mid/hff/def
Venables - hff crumber - rotate with the centre bounce

Gaff & Redden on wings. Gaff permanently wing.
Sheed/Yeo/Shuey centre with Redden rotating in the centre.

Players to have waited more than 3 years for a debut:
3 years, 17 rounds - Zach Beeck
3 years, 9 rounds - Beau Wilkesmaister
3 years, 6 rounds and counting - Matthew Allen
3 years, 6 rounds - Jeremy McGovern
3 years, 4 rounds - Fraser McInnes
We're due for another good one then.

Maybe once he gets his go he won't let go

With one less mid, i really hope we run DV through the middle more often.

I noticed pet at stoppages in the first half last week and I hope simmo uses him in a similar role from now on in.

Although tall, brander is a runner. Hes quick, clean below his knees and although a promising key position player, he's probably our most promising midfielder. Could be anything

Tho tall, i think Brander possess as much mobility, speed and skills of most modern day big bodied mids.

watch 0.58 mark. He does this on the regular basis. I'd actually say he's more clean below the knees than a lot of our mid/small sized players.

Brander in might also means that JD and JK will play a bit more close to goal with Brander playing HFF. Thought last year JD/JK played well when played closer to goal.
