Giles has a value against the bigger lumbering type rucks like Sandilands and Jacobs. In hindsight he'd have been better against McEvoy than Vardy was. Against jumping, more mobile rucks like Ryder he struggles.

Boyd is a bit on an in between ruck and the question should we play one ruck is whether Giles likely win in the ruck is going to be of more value than Vardy's work on the ground after the ruck contest and in general play

I lean slightly towards Vardy because he's more effective around the ground and Giles main value winning the hitouts against the Bulldogs is of dubious benefit

Really interested to see how we line up on Friday

That extra 0.4 effective disposals a game he gives us over Giles is invaluable....

Playing the team roles and structures seems to be appreciated by few. Everyone wants a team full of highlight reel players it seems.

No one is suggesting Giles is a Lycett calibre player but he is what we have to work with. Axing him because Paddy Ryder made him look daft around the ground is hyper-reactionary. We lost the centre clearances by 1 and we scored 5 goals from 11 centre clearances. Why change something that isn't broken?
this is fair enough, but you need to adjust the team depending on who you play.
It feels like bulldogs match up on us very well and im not sure we can proceed with two rucks for this game.

not really fussed who goes out between vardy or giles, but i think one needs to.

I'm of the view there is no reason (unless Priddis is not playing) that we should play both of Redden and Hutchings, and as such, Redden is the superior player and should be picked.

Hutchings out.

i think we need to go in with both, for what happens if Vardy breaks down and that is not out of a possibility?

Pls no talk of Gov to ruck. Him returning to full time defence is half the reason we won the last 2 games

Rucking is like spoiling right?

In: Ezy, Duggan
Out: Giles, f'ing Masten or someone.

I know Simmo doesn't want to change structures, but ours still appears to be built around a couple of mobile rucks who take marks and have link up possessions. So why not ignore the need to get hitouts, and pick the best link up player? We're basically talking Coxy's game here without the need to float back and take an intercept mark.

Limited options, yes, but maybe there's a role for Schoey who has always looked like a decent tall winger but been deeemed more useful as a bloke who can punch a ball. He's also a better short kick than Ezy.

I have wanted Masten out for a while...but after last weekend you cannot seriously drop him for that effort.

Well, he gets picked every other week for a poor return, lets play topsy turvy and dump him after a good week. Most of my post was tongue in cheek, honestly this week I think it's probably worth dropping one of the two lumbering beasts and bringing back Hey Duggee. Nothing else really needed.

Because Cole after what 1 or 2 games would add so much more than Butler would.

Please tell us this is a troll!
He'd add more speed than butler, and he carries the ball more as well. 2 things that we desperately need against the bulldogs, as evidenced by last years elimination final. He's played 3 games this year as well, which I believe would be enough.

Only two in the seniors and the first of those (at least) he was on managed minutes.

You are seriously stretching if you think and inexperienced and under done Cole would be a better option than a fit Butler.

Bordering on delusional actually.

Masten has been great this year but you will never find a 2000 post megathread with people still calling for him to be dropped, that's for sure.

He's been one of our most consistent this year. Been decent at locking the ball in at times when it looked like the opposition were going to clear it away.

Would like him to hit the scoreboard more, but has been a good platform for him to build on.

As for the changes this week.

Hutchings for Duggan does seem the done thing if Duggan is fit- although I did think hutchings did his job on the weekend. Quite handy to have a guy like him as depth.

Giles was always going to struggle against the athletic types, but what was most concerning was his inability to push Ryder the other way and make him accountable. Ryder just did what he pleased the whole game.

Although he didn't do all that much better, I thought that Vardy at least provided a better target in the air for an outlet kick.

Given we would be up against Boyd, I think Vardy has the chance to go #1 this week with McInnes as support. McInnes has been in good form, which given our ruck predicament means he should get a shot. Also think he offers more as a forward as well.

So the changes would be-

In: Duggan, McInnes
Out: Hutchings, Giles

Big game, this one. Could be the difference in a top 4 finish for both sides, given how even the top 6 are.

Would love to see Yeo take on Bontempelli both through the middle and D50. Think he is vulnerable on the rebound.

I get the idea that going in with one ruck might be the way to go with the way the Bulldogs play.
I don't get the McInnes calls though, I'd keep Giles or Vardy in before him considering how the Bulldogs play.
Don't see what McInnes could offer better.
FWIW, I'd drop one of the rucks and bring in a mobile player.
Interesting to see how the MC goes. Initially felt Hutch 1st man in, 1st man out for Duggan, though as much as i want to forget the EF, Hutch did very well on the Bont. Dugg still HAS to come in if fit.
