Re: Changes for the Blues

Heath Shaw says he is certain to come back and Trav has served his suspension although with a blank injury sheet from today's game who makes way for them??

Glad I am not on the selection team!!

Looking forward to watching the seconds tomorrow to give us a few more headaches!

Expect at least a couple of players to get a "calf injury" or if Mick is feeling especially frisky a visit from "general soreness".

Goldy can't go out after that performance. I'd say Johnson or Toovey may make way. Blair is the other one that may lose his spot in the team. Going magnificently.

I thought Johnson was pretty good yesterday. Toovey maybe but seeing as Carlton rely on 3 small quick forwards it plays to Tooveys strentghs. Lockyer & Blair possibly. Goldy definitely not. Also Sidey played better yesterday but I think he could do with a spell. Some tough decisions will need to be made.

I'd go hoarses for courses.

Blues have no tall forwards I can think of plus Waite WILL be suspended.

Presti rested. Lockyer omitted.

Shaw and Cloke to come in. Give Blair one more game, and than maybe bring Medders in for Blair the following week.

That way we can keep Johnson, Toovey and Goldsack who are all fighting for a spot for another week at least. Possibly Johnson is comfortably in the side though as he has been going very well.

hehe

I was a bit shortsighted yesterday and disagree with my original post and agree with yours.

All of Goldy, Toovey and Johnson will stay in the side even with the return of Shaw IMO. Blues have a small forward line and our small defenders are going beautifully. I'd say give Presti a rest. One could argue to rest Reid instead although he looks fresh atm. Although resting him now might make him fresher in September which matters so much more to Collingwood supporters now.

I'd think they need to choose a week off for Pendles and Ball before the finals, Ball definitely. This week maybe for Pendles. Not concerned about Carlton, they aren't much chop. Our talls murdered them last time, I can't see this changing with a fresh Clokey coming in.

Wellers was a turnover machine today, he would go out before Blair

Totally agree and assuming that no-one plays a blinder today:

In: Shaw (and maybe play him on the wing), out Wellingham (wasn't accountable at all.
In: Cloke and unfortunately Lockyer.

P.S Some weeks ago I bagged Reid, I now take it back his body on body work has really improved and certainly deserves his spot.

In: Shaw, Medhurst, Cloke
Out: Blair, Lockyer, Prestigiacomo

Really really tough to win spots now.

Blair and Lockyer have come in and filled gaps admirably for us but its time to improve the side even further, with Cloke who is an automatic and Medhurst who has finally found the form we want in the VFL. If his hunger levels arent extremely high to get back in and show his AA form then he might not be around next year.

Presti might make way if its deemed there is no matchup - which is possible as Carlton have Waite/Henderson who are coverable. He kept Riewoldt to 2 goals but the ball hardly came down and Riewoldt did get away from him up the ground quite easily. Presti also looked shaky with the ball in hand.

Imagine if Brad Dick and Nathan Brown found some fitness and form!!!
I think this is our best 22 we have in this week pretty much, Dick might be in ahead of Macaffer though (but boy is Caff giving us something since he has come back in) and Presti will play if we have a gorilla for him to play on.

B: Ben Johnson, Tyson Goldsack, Nick Maxwell
HB: Harry O'Brien, Ben Reid, Dale Thomas
C: Heath Shaw, Scott Pendlebury, Alan Didak
HF: Steele Sidebottom, Chris Dawes, Paul Medhurst
F: Brent Macaffer, Travis Cloke, Leon Davis
Foll: Darren Jolly, Dane Swan, Luke Ball
Inter: Sharrod Wellingham, Dayne Beams, Leigh Brown, Alan Toovey

Would tag Marc Murphy this week as a #1 priority - their best offensive midfielder, Judd is an inside player now which you can't really tag. Ben Johnson would be the guy for the job, or Thomas to play a defensive role on him if we need BJ for Garlett etc.

Macaffer to play a defensive role on Gibbs, and really try to play through Macaffer/Medhurst etc i.e guys who will be on their attacking half backs (Scotland is another) - they are good with the ball, without it they are vulnerable.

Heath Shaw to really try and run up the ground like he did against St Kilda.

This for mine.

Tarks can't put a foot wrong against Carlton though - Medders is knocking on the door but I prefer consistency.

Does travis have to come in?
Simply put, yes.

Trav loves playing Carlton, he has ripped them apart the last few times we have played them, and he is so clearly in our best side it isn't funny.

He's had his "rest", and will want to atone for his mistakes.

I'm not going to go "ins and outs", but instead I see the possible contenders for ins and outs;

CONTENDERS FOR INS AND OUTS;

INS: Medhurst (VFL), Cloke (Suspension), Shaw (Back injury)

OUTS: Lockyer (best 22?), Blair (not in our best 22, yet), Jolly (rest), Harry (rest, form slump), Presti (rest)

I can see 2 changes maximum happening this week, I can't see MM wanting to make more then 2 changes, which means Meds may have to wait 2 more weeks for his chance at senior level.

I still see Medhurst as being vital in September, he is in our final 22 for the first week of the finals IMO, now all I have to do is find who misses out for him.:o

Obviously Cloke and Shaw will come in, but rather than Blair personally I believe that young Sharrod hasn't done much, except back into a pack and take an absolutely courageous mark, each week, but that's all she wrote for Wellingham. Ever since he has come back into the seniors I have not seen the full pakage that was on display at the start of the year...it maybe a fitness/injury issue ( I really hope not) or it just maybe a another case of 'confidence" whereby he is told to go and help out the vfl lads until he sharpens up a bit... I just believe it would be so unfair on Blair.
Also if we go with "horses for courses" then Presti may get a rest, he wasn't needed last time so maybe goldy and tooves might avoid the chop, if heater is fit.
Medhurst for Tarks is a no-brainer (unfortunate for Lockyer 'coz he is a great servant to our great club) but the time has come to put Medders back in his spot and start helping us in our efforts to try and get a top 2 spot.....Go Pies!!!!! The carlton game is a must win for us

I mentioned in another thread that now is exactly the time you play guys like Tarks and Blair who are probably not in your best 22 for finals as it means if they are required (through injury or suspension) in the finals they will be up to the level. It's hard to take a guy who has been playing VFL all year and expect him to contribute in a finals intensity AFL game.

The flip side of that is that it helps you manage your senior guys, reducing the wear and tear.

Based on the above and considering no one deserves to be dropped. I'd be going IN: Cloke, Shaw OUT: Presti (rest) Sidebottom (Rest / form)

Given that Presti has faded and we have managed him throughout the year this is a good oppertunity to rest him. Waite may or may not play but Reid has comfortably beat him before (albeit at the other end of the ground.) Sidebottom was better on Saturday but his form line pretty much since the split round has been pretty average. I think it may be worth giving him a week or 2. Possibly a week off and then a week in the midfield getting leather posioning.

It will be interesting in coming weeks because Medhurst is knocking the door down, LeCafe has been great, Dick will almost surely start pressing for selection.
