That will be the difference for Bennell for sure. When the heat is turned up will he be able to contribute the same way and keep that 2 way running game going. Similar story to Josh Hill
Josh hasn't been a front runner since 2014 and even then he still applied great forward pressure, just didn't apply himself hard enogh. I think last year proves that he is capable of doing it consistently as well as pushing back hard to get into defence.

I have concerns about how Bennell will go against the better sides when the pressure and physicality goes up a notch but he played well enough on the weekend to keep his spot

But all outside players have that risk. What happens when there is no space, finals game, etc

There is only one way to really find out. He is mature physically, is flexible and has good endurance. I back him to stand up.

He was one of many in the same boat, not singling Hutch out in any way, shape or form. I know its only one instance from the game but that Rioli run down tackle in the centre square when Hutch just had zero awareness of what was around him still sticks in my brain from GF Day, hence my comment. I know he didn't have much support from his team mates around him telling him that Cyril was bearing down but in a GF more than any other game you really need to step it up a notch and keep your wits about you.

His added contested play along with the inclusion of Jack Redden will be worth a lot against Hawthorn this week but. I get the feeling they will be brutal against us, Clarko will have given them a bake for only playing one quarter against Geelong.

Without Shiels and Hill, Geelong found a chink in the Hawks armour but and that was speed on the inside and outside which Geelong had. If West Coast want to expose them in that way to than Jetta will need to play and Bennell will need to keep the 2 way running game up.

He got caught coz he was clearly looking upfield for a forward to hit with a pass, but as they were standing around like stunned mullets he ended up getting run down. It happened once more when he was again waiting to use the ball properly, but then after that he thought "**** it" and just went back to banging it on the boot so he didnt get caught as there were very few of his teammates doing anything on the day. He was one of the few that actually wasnt overawed by the day and got stuck in. Thats what i disagreed with about your original post, as he was one of the few that wasnt a deer in the headlights on GF day imo.

To me that why the other aspects of their game need to be up to scratch. Cripps, Lecras, Hill & Jetta have him in other areas that can still contribute when the going gets tough. What Bennell did against Brisbane and the fact he has no real strengths limits his input beyond free space to do as he pleases. Happy to be proven wrong if he stays in the team but for me its Jetta for him.

My thoughts on team selection are based on having watched the EP game on TV, went to the Eagles game and saw the Hawks on Foxtel.

Anyone getting dropped from the team on Sunday is unlucky. There was some rust and errors but there was no one clunker that says to me “have to go son”.

Barrass is about the only contender from the WAFL game that looked AFL ready and we don’t need more height. The other highlight was Tom Cole and he is not ready to face Hawthorn. Cannot agree that Hutchings looked ready. He was serviceable and best of the rest - that does not warrant selection.

We could do with 2 things from Sunday – outside run and a centre clearance team that can rove to a winning ruckman.

Hawthorn are structuring up with a small forward line and without Roughead and Hale, not sure we need three talls in defence.

If Jetta is ready, then I would pick him for the outside run and carry. Controversial and fully expecting harsh criticism from the board but I would possibly drop Schofield. We don’t need the height this week, he proved with Christian that he is a liability when manning up on a small quick forward and he is not giving a lot of run from defence (that was the year before). The other contender to make way for Jetta is Ellis. He was pretty quiet on Sunday.

I for one cannot understand the flavour of dropping either Nelson or Duggan. Unless of course your name is Ross Lyon and you aren’t prepared to play the youngsters on consistent basis.

Dean Cox has a mountain of work to do this week – he needs to teach the midfield to rove to a winning ruck especially at centre clearances!!!

This was my biggest concern when i heard he was our stoppage coach. I'll give him time but i'm not sure he's the right guy for the job. He was a fantastic ruckman, but i'm not sure he knows enough about set ups at contests. Hopefully he does, but only time will tell.

Fair call. We saw yesterday as well Geelong had one to many talls in Tom Lonergan, Henderson, Taylor and Jake Kolodjashnij. Hawthorn exploited that by playing smaller more nimble forwards on a taller Geelong defence. Might be a situation where we pick Barrass for greater versatility down back.

Several times Shuey missed the clean break away from the centre clearance.
Most of the time, last year, Shuey would hit that ball at full speed and we'd have a very advantageous centre clearance.
I'm not prepared to write that off from happening based off one game.
Naitanui was hitting a lot of the right spots, it'll just take some time for the midfield to gel together to utilize that to the full extent we could.

Well for 1 quarter they did.

People need to remember Geelong ain't that good. Outside of Hawkins, Enright and Taylor they have some pretty average talls and after Selwood and Dangerfield their midfield really falls away. Hawks were always going to get periods of dominance.

I think a better solution is to push Hawthorn structurally by playing McGovern predominantly at HF.
They are faced with two choices then.
Either they play somebody shorter than McGovern on him, or they play the first gamer Brand and risk him getting exploited because of lack of experience.

Enright is 187cm.
Hardly tall.

In: Jetta, Hutchings
Out: Bennell, Nelson

I liked the look of Bennell up forward more than I thought I would but still think Jetta and Hill are miles ahead. Not sure how we fit everyone if we keep Bennell on the list as well. Possible given Jetta and Hill might both rotate out of the forward line but still think unlikely. Not sure if Bennell as a possible defender (with Wellers out) impacts his selection - could be a positive or a negative thing (leaning negative slightly myself).

I like Nelson but not sure he is ready for big games like the Hawks yet. Keep Ellis because he is a little more versatile. Keep Butler over both Ellis and Nelson because he is a better kick, more accountable defender, and performed far better up against Hawthorn (and other big games) last year. What we really need though is another Wellingham. Cole perhaps (next year I am talking)? I've gone a bit cold on the idea of Jetta playing off half back, but maybe that's the best short-term solution for us?

I'm not a fan of having both Butler and Ellis in the same side, play very similar games except I think Butler does it better.

He actually handballed the ball though and should never have been penalised but yes sometimes his awareness is not there

Jesus people, there's absolutely no reason for Hutchings to be in the team right now. Depth player.
I'm with ya, he just doesn't add a lot imo. People say inside bull but he isn't elite contested player, that's really overblown. Obviously he can win his own ball and is a pretty good tackler but he doesn't open the game up tbh. And his kicking and decision making on the spread really can't justify an unwarranted call up. Good role player, good depth, but that's it.

for me he isn't a player who gets a call call up without showing good form in the WAFL and certainty not in place of genuine quality (couldn't believe some were saying Duggan for hutch)

Good summary.

Agree with everything bar the Schofield call but I understand where you're coming from. I'd prefer to keep Schofield down back so we can utilise Gov up forward to stretch the Hawks undersized defence and make Gibson accountable

I haven't sat through the replay yet but it looked to me that shuey was getting scragged a lot in the centre square and was regularly tackled as soon as he got possession. Incredulously he was pinged twice for holding the ball when this happened which was bullshit

!
So much this. People want Duggan and Nelson to become guns without being exposed to big games. Good clubs back in the youngsters and they genuinely reap the rewards for doing so. Luckily we have a coach that from what I can see isn't scared to play the kids.

Shit news for Ellis

One of masten or Jetta to come in for him. Too risky to bring in both of them as we can't afford to carry two underdone mids

So just the one forced change

Hopefully govs shoulder is fine
