Am I deluded or did we draft Duggan as a mid? I know we put him back to get him into the game more, but sure next season at the latest he will be ready to move to his natural position?
we draft a lot of mids (most) that aren't up to starting in the square (some much higher picks than Duggan)

I have more hope for Duggan

Outs: Hutchings Priddis Cole
Ins: Partington Mitchell Karpany

Cole stiff but we have one too many half backs in the team atm and nelson, sheppard, duggan and hurn should stay in. Plus we are one forward short still with just kennedy darling lecca cripps and resting ruck, so karpany can come in.

With zorko out might be better to get a bit more run and rest hutch this week, giving parto his first game

Listened to it live, took absolutely nothing from it.

I thought the change in language regarding Priddis was pretty significant. I was expecting the standard "hes one of our leaders, we need him out there" responses. Instead he essentially agreed he was cooked in the most respectful way he really could.

That's how I I read it anyway.

Out : Priddis
In : Naitanui

Naitanui only plays the last 15 minutes. Certainly no worse a plan than the way we have been going about it

Why aren't we dropping one of the talls? On the weekend we went in with JK, Petrie (and helping in ruck), Darling up forward, Vardy in ruck, and McGovern, Barrass, and Schofield down back.

We need to drop at least one of those players, probably Schofield. We've always looked better with Shep as the third tall and extra runners, and McGovern in the backline.

I'm sure we drafted him withe very intention of using him as a mid, despite the fact he played off the HBF in the u18 champs.

But have clearly wet our pants after noticing he wasn't coming on in the midfield and have since moved him into the backline where he has admittedly flourished. I don't mind it personally, let him get a taste of the leather and build some confidence before we try midfield stints again.

I think Yeo is the sacrifice Simpson is making for playing Duggan off a HBF now, which is annoying.

Duggan went back halfway through the Geelong game when Nelson went down, and has been a revelation. Yeo was in the midfield that game (running with Danger) and has stayed there.

I think Wellingham is the guy who's lost his spot.

I thought we looked better with Gov playing in the ruck/forward. He competed well in the contests and missed a few shots on goal but it was his presence higher up the ground rather than being stuck down back. No coincedence that our best pressure game (against Geelong)came with him up there.

If Barrass is playing and with Hurns new found form, we don't need 3 guys intercepting marks. Hurn and Barrass with Schoey or EMac playing one on one and Shep Nelson Duggan (would prefer Yeo here) as the runners

That means dropping Petrie or Vardy. I'm happy with that. Probably Petrie, as Vardy is capable of a bit more in the ruck. Even though he's not good there.

Simmo just on 6pr...interview normally gets put up fairly quick, will post when its up.

Asked specifically about is it time for Priddis by Haselby...some quotes from memory "thats a really interesting question, he's not above criticism, we'll have to sit down with Matt and work through that"

Asked about Partington "he's close, hes still working through some things, id like to get him in before the end of the season"

Asked about NN playing this year even if finals are gone "not mutually exclusive, if he's right to go he'll play"

All from memory, apologies for any misquotes

This is part of the reason why Simpson is such a dickhead sometimes; "Partington needs to work on some things..."

Oh really, but the rest of our senior midfield dont, right?

In the spirit of parity, why not send Priddis back to the WAFL to work on his disposal? Or Le Cras to work on his tackling?

Ahhhh thats right, the whole "credits in the bank thing"

This is precisely the reason why this footy club isnt moving forward, we apparently demand our kids keep working on holes in their games, but no such expectation is required by a senior player. At this rate, Partington is going to have to get 50 disposals and 6 goals to get a call up. Anyone would think we were back to the glory days of Cousins, Judd, Kerr and Cox and that our midfield is too good and too deep for kids to get a start.

Whats even more annoying, is that Partington is putting up better numbers in the WAFL then Masten, and it will be Masten who gets the call up, whilst luke "needs to keep improving"

Frustating.

Sounds better in the long term as well. I'd be happy with a Nic and Gov combo. Keep Vardy, trade Lycett if he has any value. (In an ideal world for SPP:p), draft a rookie ruck to take Petries spot.

I want Partington in too but at the same time if he is missing the defensive part of his game are we not any better off? I feel we should bring in Mutimer to take Priddas role as that inside mid that loves to tackle. Partington should come in for the expense of Lecra who can start HHF and then link up along the wing.

I could easily cop that, if the rest of out senior players in the middle were outstanding defensively, which they are not. I marvel at the fact that Simpson can say with a straight face that Partington needs to work on his defensive pressure, and then will play Le Cras next week who is completely devoid of defensive pressure.

He holds our kids to higher standards then he does our senior players, which is fundamentally wrong.

With Partington a sign that things are ok is that his WAFL form has not seemed to have tapered off. If he was being given the rough end of the pineapple I think we would see a lot less effort in the games but if the communication between player and coach is good then we might see what we are seeing which is a young player continuing to perform to a high standard in the WAFL. Potentially good signs.

In saying that they way our midfield performs in the senior team surely it wouldn't be so bad to give him a 2 -3 game stretch right now.

On the back of 6PR last night and ABC with his good mate Belly this morning I don't think Parto will be debuting any time soon...

Jesus. There are players in the team with the same issue. They are also cooked, so will not be improving and developing, so why not play the kid who will get better with game time.

Seriously how much worse could Parto make this midfield? Going to turn it from premiership material into trash?

He should have been playing 6 weeks ago FFS, and if Simpson had a brain, he'd be playing for the rest if the year.

No, u r wrong. Many posters who watch wafl have said he lacks impact and has things to work on. Many of his high possession games have been reported as minimal impact.

Others want him in instead of lecras (as though they play same position) and others want him instead of priddis and given priddis stature, that's essentially expectation that he will come in, get 20 possessions, not have players "walz past him" and be contested ball winner. Some others think he is a goal kicking midfielder that we need, when it's clear that's not our need.

Partington is now a symbol for everything wrong with club.

Sorry that's piling on pressure and we will turn on him. He is set up.

He lacked impact early in the year for sure, but when you start kicking goals like he has the last 5 weeks to go with still getting plenty of the ball I think he certainly has earnt a go. Is only a second year player, far from a finished product, but will only truly improve once he gets a taste of the big time and knows what is required.

He should come in for Priddis, but not to play his role. We have other midfielders who get pushed out of that role enough like Sheed and Redden who should be in there.

Only fools will expect him to dominate in his first game, I know that we have plenty of supporters like that but like to think there's enough on here that aren't that deluded.

Agreed, it took Duggan 30 odd games to find his feet. This is why we need to play Parto now. If we want him to be a player for us next year, he needs games now.

I would like us to take the helicopter view and understand that we did not deliver this year but we can still salvage something from this year.

1. Truth is we have suffered in not getting the ball tapped to us. Cox and NicNat (add in to a lesser extent Lycett) have been dominant ruckman and I believe our mids do not know how to play to a losing ruck. We get both back next year and have unearthed a great recruit in Vardy that will give both depth and options. The focus has to be at winning first use of the ball and finding out who can actually get their hands on the ball and do something with it. If we want a full time tackler - then we have Priddis and Hutchings.

2. We need to find out more of our youngsters so I would like to see Parto and Karpany told that they have the next 4 games. I probably have seen enough of Mutimer to believe he is depth. I would probably not bother with Lamb as he is a failed experiment and we have no idea of where and how to play him.

3. Persevere with Cole, Nelson and Duggan. They are all looking AFL quality and we need games into them.

4. Lecras and Priddis to join Masten, Butler and Wellers at East Perth. I know we are contracted with Priddis but let him have his 2018 exit interview now and let him know that he should call Scott Thompson and ask him how much he enjoyed this season. As for the rest, let them know their careers are in jeopardy.

5. Long overdue we need to give some home truths to players about how they play. Darling - no more staging. Barrass - keep watching that balance between marking and spoiling. Sheppard - disposal and decision making by hand is awful. Cripps - take on the run and carry as your crap kicks from 45 will see you dropped. etc Time to set mini targets for the rest of 2017.

Truth of the matter is that I am now not worried whether we make finals. As put by many, if we make finals we will only be making up the numbers.

Let's not waste the year. Let's learn.

Oh and tell Vozzo he has 3 months to start the process of making the Football Operations elite. He should be required to give the board a presentation on what his vision for football operations is and how he will achieve it. No more Nisbett puppet and no more wishful thinking. It is now time to deliver the vision.

Really there might be very few changes .....the team play Bottom teams Brisbane and Carlton at home so the team needs to go into flattrack overdrive to improve the percentage . I know a win would be good enough the way we are playing but to make the eight now we need flattrack overdrive this week ......so not too many changes I predict .

Boooooooooo!

we draft a lot of mids because (at least I think)

  1. a lot of youth coaches will play their best players in the midfield
  2. the nature of the modern game requires most of the 18 on field to have some ability to play up the ground

basically it's a lot easier to teach a mid to play HBF than it is to teach a BP
