The Butters Cup: Changes vs Port in Ballarat

I just have no idea why we didn’t give Ballarat a rest this year, with all the construction going on. The fact that maybe 5,000 fans will turn up to watch a game — a game that, if it were played at Marvel on the same day, would get a crowd of around 30,000 — just seems wrong.

What will playing at Ballarat achieve? I gather that with such a small crowd, we won’t have people eating and dining around the town. the only business that might make some money, it’s probably the KFC on the Western Highway on the way home.

We are currently on a bit of a winning streak but are down in membership, and I believe playing this game for around 5000 people to watch doesn’t help regarding getting more members
Not that I disagree but it's probably some give and take. We get hundreds of thousands of dollars from them and they probably didn't want a "gap" and for people to forget about them.

We probably should have been stronger in reserving a right to not play there in the contract if the capacity was so low though.

I know he was joking, but I did have a bit of a chuckle when Dunks asked Adz on last week's weekly Podcast how far away he is from returning.

Adz said the timeline is 1-2 weeks, he's in full training and he'll be aiming to return against PA. That was followed with, "If they can fit me in," eluding to the fact we're playing well and it would be tough to drop someone.

I just want to beat these guys so badly. Get that Monkey off our back. Treloar back will certainly help. I think he plays but it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up being (tactically) subbed out. Given that's what happened with Bont, I'd half expect the same thing to happen with Adz. It's either that or 72% game time.

Dollars no doubt. 5000 patrons standing and paying general admission prices is small fry compared to what the state and local governments provide in sponsorship for these matches.

Off field, I have no doubt that the club is in a very difficult position in terms of cash and debt due to the judicial loss in the pedo Hobbs matter and with other persons who are making claims against us in relation to him.

I am scarred from last years game where they absolutely demolished us.

Dolan is the only out for mine (barring any injuries).

Has done really well and has a bright future, but is so lightly framed, so it's hard to back up week after week.

With our next 2 at Ballarat and Darwin will be particularly difficult for a player of his type to impact. Probably a good time for him to go to Footscray and give his body a bit of a break.

I'd keep Hynes in. He's more physically ready. I really like a couple of things he's done, reckon he'd be useful at Ballarat.

He is small but in terms of the other side of being physically ready he had our second most KMs at high speed and fastest average speed in attack on the weekend. He’s obviously still learning where and when to go (only 3 disposals) but I’d keep him in until McNeil is back, to help keep opposition defenders honest when we spread/rebound.

If Treloar is ready to go then Hynes would be the out for me. Give him a full game in the guts at VFL level.

If McNeil is fit I don't see how it isn't a like for like swap for Dolan.

I really like Dolan, it's impressive how quick he thinks for a first year player and how much of a team-oriented player he is. But 3 touches with 73% TOG is still just 3 touches with 73% TOG. And none of the 3 were score involvements or intercept possessions.

McNeil in for him, and McNeil sub. Treloar in for Hynes.

Oh boy, Treloar and McNeil both tests and potentially available this weekend from latest injury report. Coffield coming back through the VFL potentially also, but getting those two back if available is huge

Not sure how I feel about Treloar coming back. Our midfield is absolutely humming at the moment. I know he's a good player but our current midfield set up feels more dynamic than in previous years when our midfield on paper was excellent but in practice was mid-table.

I’d give Adsy one game in the VFL then bring him back in to manage libba.

Despite the opponent not being the ideal team to rest players (Gold coast suns), it’s for the best that we don’t take Libba into greasy conditions in Darwin where the temperature is probably 30 degrees. Not to mention the 5 hour flight.

I don't disagree with what you say, but what an incredible position we're in where we can question bringing a 2024 AA straight back into the team.

Treloar to sub?!
